Changes Coming to the Canadian Automotive Market
April 29, 2010 by stuart

The Canadian vehicle market has taken on an identity of its own over the last 15 years. Unlike their American counterparts, Canadians typically took the avenue of finding a new vehicle as appose to buying previously owned. This was by far most apparent in the automotive sector where 3 out of every 4 cars sold were considered “New.” However, today brings uncertain times with a declining and uncertain economy every industry has felt the effects.
The Canadian Automotive sector is seeing quite the transformation in that the popular leases of the past are being phased out by franchised dealers in favour of financing. GMAC Club and Chrysler Financial have discontinued leases throughout North America. Ford Motor Credit hasn’t exactly taken the same approach; they have instead increased their lease rates to the point that no one could even afford them. We must ask ourselves why? For starters, dealerships have seen too many lease terminations due to missed payments and in turn have now become stuck with an abundance of unexpected off lease vehicles in their inventory. Even more pressing is the difficulty that dealerships are having in trying to sell any cars in these scarce economic times. Furthermore, from a funding standpoint, money isn’t as readily available due to the deteriorating credit of the finance arms and their parent automakers. This has made for a very difficult situation in the automotive sector and has instantly transformed the Canadian automotive market. In the U.S.A. one out of every four cars sold is used, Canadians should begin to anticipate similar sales ratios.
Research into the Canadian consumer has provided some interesting findings:
· Canadian consumers tend to be more risk averse than their counterparts in other markets.
· They are also more cost-conscious, with monthly payments a major driving factor behind purchase decisions.
· They tend to keep vehicles longer than in the United States, resulting in a less active used vehicle market.
The economy has initiated a dramatic, yet necessary change. Canadians will no longer be able to afford monthly payments and as leases conclude over the next 3 years an abundance of consumers will have to turn to the used vehicle market to find a vehicle they can readily afford.
Consumers now more than ever are shopping online for previously owned vehicles. Selection has been key to shopping in the past; however today new services exist the help buyers find the vehicle that promises to be right for them. The market, which was dominated my the Auto Trader brand has taken on new life with a company dedicated to finding potential buyers quality used vehicles. Using the provision of information, Vehicle Gateway Corp. has launched .vehiclegateway.com to introduce an interface that meets the needs and wants of today’s consumers. Vehicle Gateway has been designed around the provision of information; private sellers’ and dealers’ will now have to include Vehicle Identification Numbers, Certification status, full descriptions, condition reports, multiple photos, video’s allowing buyers to hear vehicles operate as well as provide accident history and include reasons for selling the vehicle. This abundance of information will allow users to decipher through an abundance of ads to find the vehicle that not only meets their needs in terms of type, make, model or year, instead buyers can now go beyond this in finding the vehicle that’s past and present meets up to their respective standards.
In turn, http://www.vehiclegateway.com anticipates weeding out those vehicles of inferiority, sellers’ will become nervous to advertise with Vehiclegateway.com for fear that the information provided would counteract the sale of their vehicle(s). Now inexperienced buyers will not only know the questions to ask, but answers will already be provided. This ultimately empowers the consumer and therefore makes for a more honest and less apprehensive buying process. In addition to the information provided, tools such as CarFax’s Vehicle History reports provide full disclosure for prospective buyers and ultimately will live consumers with greater piece of mind when it comes down to the sale. In America, Vehicle History Reports are said to be in over 75% of pre-owned vehicles transactions. With even an even more risk averse nation combined with the anticipated growth of the secondary vehicle market, Vehicle Gateway Corp. believes that tomorrow’s transaction will likely include the use of vehicle history reports. Vehicle Gateway truly provides “Information you need. Vehicles you want.”
http://www.vehiclegateway.com promises to be in the buyer’s corner to ensure a quality used vehicle purchase. How much am I really worth to my dealership as an automotive service advisor?
I got incredibly lucky and got hired in September at Chrysler through a temp. agency as a service advisor. I knew little to nothing about cars, but they were more concerned about getting somebody who could learn the computers system quickly while providing solid customer service.
I learned everything quickly, even the car stuff, and was just moved up to Toyota, which means more volume and more customers. I am still making 9 dollars an hour through the temp. agency.
The only commission I get is the 5 bucks I get when customers get a menu service like a transmission, coolant, or fuel service. (I’ve only gotten 19 of those in almost three months.)
I am just a couple of weeks from my 90-day review, and I was just wondering what you think I should actually expect to be paid. I have a college degree and a high average per repair order. (One thing to consider when answering is that I do not live in a big city; however, it is not a small town either. I write almost 500 repair orders per month.)
I probably won’t get the typical salary + commission structure that advisors get in a big city, so I am looking more at what you think a fair weekly salary/hourly rate would be. I know we are in a recession, but I will have to move if I only keep grossing $1440 a month.
So yeah, what do you think I should be getting if they move me onto the payroll at 40 hours a week?
Tony,
I was moved to Toyota for how well I do my job. The guy who was originally at Toyota was moved to Chrysler. At the least, the logical move to is to lower his wage and increase mine.
Say what you want, but most people could not jump right into a service advisor job and thrive – especially with limited car and computer knowledge. (Generally speaking, people usually have one or the other. I happened to fall in the latter group.)
The temp agency would not send another person. The dealership only kept me because I INCREASED profits compared to the guy that they let go when the recession hit.
I agree that my college degree does not merit a raise. By the manager’s admission, my degree was the deciding factor in hiring me.
“you didn’t know anything and made it and so will the next person.” I disagree.
Somebody MAY have been able to do it, but the fact is this – they DIDN’T. I did better than somebody who had been there 5 years. Most temps wash out and do barely average. I didn’t.
Answer
My guess would be $9.00 an hour, why should they pay more? You don’t like it and walk and the temp sends another at $9.00 an hour.Your college degree has nothing to do withnit and does not warrent more money and the orders you took if you were not there someone else would have gotten them.I mean come on a person calls up and scheduled an oil change, big deal. What I am saying is they do not have to much to worry about in getting someone to do this job,by your own words you didn’t know anything and made it and so will the next person.$9.00 an hour take it or leave it

GPS Car Navigation Buying Guide
April 26, 2010 by stuart
Filed under Car Electronics & GPS
GPS aroses revolution in car driving. Today, drivers don’t need to settle behind the wheel of their car having no idea about how to reach their destination. GPS (Global Positioning System) car navigation systems can clearly show the exact way to get to their wanted place, and quite a few of the systems even could tell you by sound.
This advanced gadget differs in types, sizes and functions. And the same GPS would have different prices in different retail/wholesale car electronics stores. So with so many factors to consider, how could you choose a suited GPS for your car? Here offers a good guidance for your purchase.
The Basics
1. Invention
According to Wikipedia, GPS (Global Positioning System) was created by the United States Department of Defense for the purpose of location confirmation. Nowadays, it is widely used by people on the earth for their navigation requirements.
2. Components
A common GPS car navigation system often includes the following components:
GPS Receiver/ Global Positioning System – Satellite signals pick-up for position determination
Screen – Routes and maps display
Computer Processor – Routes, times and distances calculation
Map Database – Plenty of typical places info such as petrol stations, schools, and hospitals
Loudspeaker – Verbal instructions
GPS Holder – Car console or dashboard attachment
GPS Antennas – GPS signals amplification
Buying Guidance
Use Frequency – If you often use it, buy high quality, brand car GPS, because they are more user-friendly; if not, buy an inexpensive one, as they are usually smaller and lighter.
Car Layout – The gadget is always equipped on the dashboard or a pedestal extending from the dashboard. If you unluckily choose an unsuitable one, it might cause air venting problems, discomfort to exit/enter your car or sit or some other questions.
Vocal + Graphical – You are not only could see clearly, but also listen explicitly.
Point of Interest Data & its Update – It offers ease for you to locate specific place, like banks, schools, airports and hotels.
Installation Time – Systems are more complicated and take longer to install if they are depend on maps displayed on monitors than others which don’t rely.
Price Comparison – The same product might differ in prices in different wholesale electronics stores/retail stores. Never buy a product that you firstly see in a store.
Trial Use – If you buy offline, you could try to use the GPS you want to buy. Many sellers have prepared sample Car GPS for you to see, touch and experience.
Simple Maintenance
Mount it out of direct sunlight. The dashboard might become riskily hot for GPS even on cool days – that probably cause damage to the GPS memory.
Keep your gadget away from impact, heat, dust and humidity.
Clean. Wiping it with a clean cloth is OK. For GPS having openings like card slot, you’d better clean it with canned air instead of cloth and your humid breath.
Be careful about the moving parts. They are more likely to be damaged comparing to other parts.
Don’t drop your GPS unit too frequently. Accidentally dropping once or twice might cause no damage for normal use. But no electronics can endure frequent dropping.

The Popularity of Online Automotive Ads
April 25, 2010 by stuart
As the automotive industry continues to struggle in a poor economy, manufacturers’ and dealers’ have made significant cuts to their advertising budgets. These companies who were once upon a time some of North America’s leaders in terms of marketing expenditures, are now looking to reduce this high expense in search of lower cost means that can produce similar returns on investment. In addition today’s new car sales have become so poor that a greater emphasis has been placed on their pre-owned inventory. Used cars and used trucks today offer many of the advantages of buying new and are a much more affordable option. For consumers trying to buy a used car or used truck the difficulty comes in finding one that meets their specific needs. Unlike a new car purchase, with a used car you can’t pick colour, interior, kms, engine size or options. These specifications could only have been made when the vehicle in question was being purchased new. Therefore, people looking to buy a car typically just won’t go to one dealership, instead they want to comparison shop and the most popular means of buying a used vehicle has been through using online automotive marketplace’s as well as free classified sites. These online methods allow buyers to search and or browse through thousands of ads in search of the used car, truck, motorcycle, boat, snowmobile, ATV or collector car that’s right for them.
Today with the rise of the pre owned vehicle, more Canadian then ever before will search province or even nation wide for the used vehicle that’s right for them. It will be imperative for car dealers and boat dealers to have a presence on each and every popular online interface. As more consumers then ever before will search online for used cars in Canada, it will be imperative from a marketing stand point that a dealers’ inventory is seen by the masses. Online automotive marketplaces offer a low cost, high return means of advertising. Dealers can’t afford to miss out on a potential client to another dealership who is advertising the same vehicle. Comparison shopping is here to stay and it will critical that dealers make their inventory available on a variety of websites.
One site that seems to becoming quite popular is vehiclegateway.com, which is owned by Vehicle Gateway Corp. They’re an Ontario based company dedicated to an honest approach in buying and selling used vehicles. Sellers can sell a car for free; the opportunity to post an ad for free will attract thousands of sellers as they can finally attain nation wide exposure, free of charge with respect to a true vehicle marketplace. All sellers are required to provide an abundance of information about their respective vehicle(s). This information will allow buyers searching for a car to make a more informed decision, which in turn will make their time spent online more efficient and effective. The average buyer spends over a half an hour online and this provides a perfect opportunity for any type of advertiser attempting to sell their used vehicle. Vehiclegateway.com is the new name in the online vehicle market as their interface combines the advantages of the popular free classified sites with that of a true automotive marketplace. Buyers can search nationwide as they search to ultimately buy a car, buy a sedan, buy a luxury car, buy a truck, buy a SUV, buy a van, buy a pick up truck or buy a convertible. Vehicle Gateway Corp is the perfect place to find and buy a car in Ontario as well as to sell a car in Canada. Make sure to visit www.vehiclegateway.com as it tailored to the buyer in helping then find the used autos that are suite their individual needs. Go to vehiclegateway.com to sell your used vehicle for free, comprehensively search Canadian used car ads as well as used trucks in Canada. Also at vehiclegateway.com users can browse through vehicle categories similar to a free classifieds site, any users can browse through cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles, green vehicles, ATVs, and Collector Cars.

Has anyone installed after-market HIDs on 07 Toyota Camry?
I have 07 Camry SE and have been thinking of getting HID lights for it. I did some research and came across an article which basically said that even the brand name HIDs in the US (like Phillips, Bosch, or McCulloch) are fake. According to this article, the parent companies don’t even make such parts and have never heard of HID automotive lights. Below is a link to the review:
http://www.hidreview.com/
Anyhow, if the “brand-names” HIDs are fake, why not go with something like MTEC, which appears to be a product made in Japan.
The MTEC store on eBay has a designated “Camry 07+” HID kit. Has anyone purchased them? Do they work OK?
Answer
the camry is a easy install but make sure you get kit that are true plug and play some say that but you need to add a wiring to the battery to make certain cars work. i did buy one from ebay but… i had a lot of hassle (it was my fault though) but i finally bought a kit from
http://www.mvisionauto.com/car%20pages/toyota.html
they helped me out with my problem and didn’t jerk me around.
customer service was great.
p.s. make sure you get the right bulbs and i recommend getting them in 8000k they look the best out of all the colors. your car should be a H11 bulb but just double check to make sure.

How to Buy Car DVD Players 5 Important Steps for Secure Purchase
April 21, 2010 by stuart
Filed under Car Electronics & GPS
Car DVD players make us farewell to boring time on our way to travel or business. Cars with DVD players are not the exclusive phenomenon of coaches any more. Many private cars are installed this kind of electronics. Thanks to high technology, it makes wholesale car electronics sellers or their retailers offer this device at more affordable prices than before. But an unsuitable player might only be used as an adornment and it even produces a bad affection on our original good mood.
There are a large number of car DVD players on the market. And they are different in prices, types, sizes and additional functions. Many of us might have no idea about where to start. Actually, our purchase will become happy and efficient if we finish it step by step.
Knowing the product is the first step to our purchase success. It’s not necessary for us to master the knowledge as professionally as experts. The basics are OK. This kind of info could easily get from internet, people who already has car DVD players or books. The site “http://products.howstuffworks.com/car-dvd-players-buying-guide.htm” is a good website if you wanna get the basic knowledge as well as common-used glossary of car DVD players.
Second, comparing prices are also important for car electronics purchase. Comparing prices makes us capable of beating the prices down accordingly and prevents us from being cheated by snake oil sellers. Internet is an access to know the prices, as it has numerous electronics stores. We also could get the info from electronics shops, as all sellers, no matter reliable or not, are willing to offer this info to their potential customers.
Third, read customer reviews. Customer reviews always offer complete, unbiased comments on the products including their features, technical details, specifications, pros, cons, and customer rates. Very helpful, right?
Fourth, buying from national or international brand stores effectively protects you from counterfeit or shoddy products. Amazon, Overstock, Newegg, etc. are world famous online stores. If you want to buy from China, consider ActFind, Chinavasion, Wholesalesglobal, etc. are nation-famed wholesale electronics online stores which also support retail.
Fifth, pay attention to product warranty. The authentic products manufacturers always offer certain-period warranty for non conditional exchange, return and repair while fake products suppliers seldom provide. Product warranty ensures you to have no after-buying worries.

In today’s world, no high end automotive is without its GPS to helps us travel from destination A to destination B. We can buy optional GPS systems as part of a new car buy or select models that are installed later. However, whether to buy one straight off or select one later that may be of better quality is a tough choice. Here are some considerations to think about when considering buying the GPS option that comes with a new car or having another GPS system installed.
Almost all the newest GPS system have a few things in common: Full-color Street maps, easy touch-screen controls, traffic alerts and rerouting options. It is the other features, cost and your integration options that make the difference.
First off let’s consider cost. Built-in GPS systems offered on new vehicles are often much more expensive. In-dash add-on navigational GPS systems are often only moderately expensive but need to be installed by professionals which can add to your expenses. Portable automotive GPS navigation systems are usually the most economical and easily ported from one vehicle to the next.
Secondly, consider integration with other automotive systems. Built-in GPS’s LCD display are shared with other car systems like climate control, antenna, power attachments, the radio, and hands-free cell phone. In-dash add-on GPS systems usually replace a vehicle’s radio/CD player, require an additional antenna and are not is only partially “integrated” into the car’s systems. Portable GPS systems have the least integration but often do not require external antennae.
New-car built-in GPS systems offered larger LCD screens are usually larger which gives better visibility, but the drawback is that they are usually a step behind in new features and map updates. In-dash GPS also usually include large LCD displays, AM/FM sterol and sometimes CD/DVD players with LCDs that fold away when not in use. While the portable automotive GPS device is usually much smaller, it has the usually provides quickest available update as it can be easily removed and updated through your PC.
Your final consideration is the size of the screen and features. The largest LCD screens are found in the new-car built-in GPS systems which increase visibility to the driver. The drawback to these systems is they are usually slower in feature and map updates. The good news is that in-dash GPS usually provide comparable size LCD displays. They can also provide integrated AM/FM stereo and sometimes CD/DVD players with LCDs that fold away. However, for quickest and easiest updates, it is the portable automotive GPS device that a consumer wants. The drawback is that these devices generally have smaller displays.

Car News and Reviews

It is always nice to know all the pertinent information regarding a certain car which interests us, so that when we go to a dealer to purchase such vehicle we are well informed as far as its features and capabilities. This basic rule applies not only to cars and the automotive industry but to electronic gadgets, properties, etc.
When people hear the word “news” the first thoughts that come to mind are war, people killing each other, natural disasters, robberies (white collar, blue collar or plain old thieves), fashion, and any other event which catches our attention but there are in fact, all sorts of news and the automotive industry makes one of them.
It is very exciting to know when our favorite vehicle manufacturer comes up with new and improved models such as the Audi A4 (2009 model) or the all new Ferrari California. Before spending in such beautiful models it is a very intelligent thing to do to shop around, compare and actually read car review magazines or even better, blogs and forums which have active users who can share their experiences after owning a certain vehicle; networking is the key to a smart purchase.
Keeping up with all of these news is time consuming and a hard thing to do, unfortunately as useful as forums are, most of them don’t offer a direct feed where the user can subscribe and read all the latest discussion topics and articles through one news reader. Luckily, this feature is available on blogs, which can refresh their content as often as possible and provide handy tools to keep subscribers up to date through RSS feeds, this way a car enthusiast can subscribe freely to several car news blogs and sites which offer feeds and download all the news and headlines to one program.
Other newsworthy event within the automotive industry are “car shows and conventions”, depending on the place where you reside there are many ways to access up to the minute information about such events. Some are held in the US and create a great buzz, others in Canada and Europe. Many will agree that such conventions are the best events next to Xmas, Hanukkah, New years eve, etc.
Networking and exchanging ideas with other people around the world pays off, using the web to get detailed information about a certain vehicle leads towards a smarter decision which will satisfy not only your taste but your budget.

With increasing electronics in future car technology will there still be demand for mechanical engineers?
I know that there is a great demand for mechanical engineers throughout the world however in regard to the automotive industry will there still be a great demand for mechanical engineers despite future cars being more influenced by electrics? I read a review in the new Honda FCX clarity has only one moving part in it’s “engine”, and this car seems to be an example of where transport technology is going – dominated more and more by electronics.
To enter into the future automotive industry would it be wise to do electrical or mechanical engineering? I am keen on mechanical however recently this question has been lurking at the back of my mind.
Your answers are much appreciated.
Answer
The car chassis stiffness, its resonance to bumps, the deformation of the suspension elements in turns, the crush zones in case of accidents are all area where mechanical engineering would still be required.
More electronics means more electrical engineer’s involvement, but do not expect much reduction in the mechanical side.

The voltage is the important thing. The alternator can be a million amp capacity, but it will only put out as much as the system needs.
