    Very good netbook
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook to take it to school with me. It is very light weight and fits in my bag perfectly. It has 2mb memory and runs really fast, enough for basic school use(Office, internet, etc). Definitely highly recommend this for light use.

Great netbook. Very fast and responsive with better resolution than the 10.2 inch models. Perfectly coupled with Windows 7 to give great 64bit performance.

    Unacceptable Service Support
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My computer screen was defective right out of the box, full of flicker and black lines. After two days of dealing with Acer customer support, I only get the option of delivering the unit to a Fedex shipper and waitting 10 days for a repaired unit. Considering that this is a brand new unit, I do not consider ending up with a repaired unit acceptable customer service. Buyers should beware and shame on Acer! I also complained to a supervisor but got no other alternative, “this is our warranty policy” If you don’t like it, return it to where you purchased it. For this reason I do not recommend that you purchase Acer products.

    Love It!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received my Acer for Christmas. I love it. I wanted something smaller and lighter weight than our 17″ HP laptop. The size and weight is perfect. It is much faster than the HP and it really holds a charge well. The keyboard is user friendly and with a cordless mouse it is excellent. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. The blue color is perfect also. Much easier all around than the larger laptop.I use it way more than I thought I would. Glad it came with Windows 7 Home Premium too. Excellent value for the price.

    Great computer for travel
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook for travel. It is bigger than most netbooks but small enough to travel with. I bought a bag that doubles as a purse so I only have one bag to carry. The keyboard is great and the screen is a little bigger and easier to read. This product is well worth what I paid for it and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a smaller, lighter computer without loosing quality.

    Acer Aspire 1410-2039 (black)
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I would always much rather upload a video response than type out a long text one. The vid is about 8 minutes long and hopefully worth your time. It at least gives you a live look at the computer itself and some specs on it.

Unfortunately when I tried to upload to Amazon the file size was 11mb over the 100mb limit. I’ve already re-recorded once and instead of killing more of my day, I’ve decided to post a link to youtube where I uploaded it instead.

Not sure why, but the review won’t let me post the link to this computer. If you want to search youtube for my video review, here is the exact title of my video: Acer Aspire 1410-2039 Note (Net) Book Review. Or, if you prefer to find it via my channel, my username is pastorebbs. I ALSO POSTED A DIRECT LINK IN THE COMMENTS OF THIS REVIEW DIRECTLY BELOW.

For a quick-look, here are my list of pros and cons I covered in the video:

    Cons:

Trackpad: Can be hard to identify from the palm-rest area of the case. Trackpad is smooth, case is textured in a “brushed” aluminum sort of way.

Speakers: Are all the way on the bottom on the case. Muffles the sound horribly when sitting on your lap.

Webcam: Is just a 1.3MB resolution. Makes for grainy chatting and ghost-trails with movement.

PROS: (Far outweigh the cons you’ll notice)

Size/Weight Ratio: 11.6″ OLED screen is compact, but substantially bigger than 10″ netbooks. Weighs in at just 3.5 lbs.

Screen: OLED backlit screen is so sharp and intense I have to take the brightness down to 1/3 just to tolerate it.

Keyboard: It’s full-sized as opposed to the 10″ netbook keyboards being dwarfed due to the screen size.

Battery: Mine is still conditioning, but I believe I can pull over 6 hours out of this baby. It’s a 6-cell, netbooks are 3-cell.

Keypad: While it’s a con, it’s also a pro due to it’s multi-touch capabilities. Most functional is the enlarge/reduce motion

Webcam: Also a con, it’s fully capable of skyping with the quality of MOST full-sized laptops. MOST PC laptops still have a 1.3mp

Performance: Celeron processor destroys all others, especially a netbooks atom. 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, Wireless, B, G, N, Windows 7 Home Premium. Netbooks are only available with Windows 7 Starter. Which is a much weaker version requiring upgrades.

Conclusion: This baby will do most everything you want a full-sized laptop to do and more, while maintaining the size/weight/functionality of today’s tiny netbooks. I’ve only had it for two weeks, but I’m convinced this suckers solid construction and usability are Acer Aspire AS1410-2039 11.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)built to last and be carried for a while.

Husband always was nervous about sharing the laptop with the children. Now we have an affordable, easy to use unit that our teens and elementary age child can share. It is mostly used for internet tv viewing, facebook, games, and a little bit of homework. Battery life is great.

Started right up with no problems. Brilliant screen with excellent resolution, easy to read, easy on the eyes. Battery life exceeds 6 hours. Very comfortable big key keyboard. Very good wireless Internet connectivity. 3 USB ports and chip reader provide versatility. In use about 6 weeks.

Combination of screen size, memory, disk size and processor speed with Windows 7 Home premium make this an excellent value.

Only complaint is terrible documentation both printed and online.

A really great alternative to a netbook
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this for my wife and she LOVES it. I played with it a little while when I was setting it up for her (moved it to LINUX), and I’m actually thinking about getting another one for myself. :-)

I’m very glad I didn’t go the true ‘netbook’ route and got this instead. This has much better performance than any netbook I’ve ever tried. Everything works very well and it really feels like good quality.

Windows 7 64-bit with 11 inch display and ergonomic keyboard, weighting a lot less than a heavy notebook and much better than the tiny netbooks ? integrated webcam, very slim, 2G and 250GB HD ??, Wi-fi (draft-N very fast) and 6-hour battery ?

You would say it would be impossible to find for less than USD 500. This is just an excellent buy.

There is NOT any other better alternative than this as a cost-benefit choice.

It’s almost as small as the netbook but has a much more comfortable keyboard and screen size. I really enjoy the portability without losing the programs I like to use. I am pleased with Windows 7 as compared to Vista. It makes the Toshiba notebook I had feel like a desktop. The price is great and I’m very happy with my purchase.

Fast netbook, well balanced and great price for the money
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got the 1.3GHz Celeron CULV version, with the following specs:

    - 1.3GHz single core Celeron CULV processor

    - 11.6″ 1366×768 screen, LED backlit

    - Built-in Intel 4500MHD graphics accelerator

    - 2GB RAM

    - 250GB SATA hard drive (it’s a Western Digital Scorpio Blue drive)

    - Wifi 802.11b/g/n

    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I had a previous model Acer Aspire One 8.9″, and really needed more screen space. I wanted a netbook, without an Atom processor (the Atom is way too slow at least for my tastes), and that had a 1366×768 screen. This netbook had all the specs I wanted.

Thinking that 1.3GHz would be underpowered, I played with it for almost an hour in the store before actually buying it. It was really impressive that it actually performed faster than any other 1.6GHz Atom netbook I compared it to. I can play youtube videos full screen, although when switching to HD mode, it stuttered a bit.

Windows 7 on this machine is really a pleasure to use. For the minimal tasks it’s used for (Skype, Web Browsing, Office 2007, Youtube/Hulu videos) it has very, very acceptable performance. I think it is due to the fast hard drive it included, a 5400 rpm Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD2500BEVT), which are known to be great laptop drives.

The screen is very good, bright and easy on the eyes. I don’t think a resolution less than 1366×768 would be acceptable for any netbook. Great improvement in terms of available desktop space compared to my smaller 8.9″ netbook.

In terms of battery life, upon doing the tasks I previously mentioned, with mostly web browsing and with the screen set at full brightness, it can do around 5 hours of use. Compared to my Aspire One’s 1 and a half hours of battery life, this is a massive improvement.

Very satisfied with Acer netbooks, they always deliver a great user experience, along with a great price.

    I paid $399 for a computer that didn’t turn on…
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I had searched around for a net book with a decent speed and memory. I chose the Acer Aspire AS1410-2497 for 399 (amazon has raised the price for some reason) over the Gateway EC1433U with similar specs. I received the laptop and it looked great. I followed all the set up procedures but when I turned it on nothing happened. Blank screen and no hard drive activity. Apparently Amazon takes it on good faith from the distributer that the laptop functions correctly. I rated the product as a 2 because I was happy with the portability and size of the screen… nothing more obviously because the thing wouldn’t turn on. Amazon couldn’t replace it because it wasn’t in stock at the time so I had to send it out to Acer for repairs. This was negotiated after 2 hours talking to customer service at both Amazon and Acer. Its been over a month since I first placed the order and I am still waiting for Acer to return the netbook. So not only did Amazon send me a laptop that didn’t turn on but now they have jacked up the price another hundred bucks. Buyers beware.

    I Love This Netbook/Notebook!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had this netbook for about a month and love it.

I started out looking for a 10.1″ netbook and had some models in mind, but couldn’t decide. So I decided one Saturday to go to several stores and see them in person. I then saw the Aspire 1410 and compared the features. There is no comparison, a netbook or a full notebook in a small package, this is a no brainer I was sold.

As a sideline I was originally considering an Asus, but after reading all the reviews about bad customer service, I decided that would not be a good idea. Where as, the reviews on Acer customer service were very positive. Fortunately, I have not had to test this.

    Great for the price
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a great options for those who want a small laptop but don’t necessarily want to be restricted by a netbook. This Acer has an 11.6 inch HD display that looks amazing. Pictures look pristine and full of detail with this monitor display. The Acer is extremely portable since it is super light.

It has an Intel Celeron processor and long battery life. The keyboard took some getting used too, even though my previous laptop was a 12 inch Dell Inspiron. When I want to hit ‘enter’ I kept hitting the ” key. My big gripe with this laptop is the mouse/touch pad. Although the multiple touch feature is helpful, the touch pad is 1. not as sensitive, or 2. as big as I would like it to be. They could have made the touch pad a bit bigger, at least expanding it sideways. As it is, I find it a bit uncomfortable.

This is a great option for a laptop and you just can’t beat the price. Get this instead of a netbook.

This is a very special computer. I love everything about it. My Amazon experience has been absolutely wonderful with this computer purchase. The computer has a full size keyboard and the full version of Windows 7. Absolutely fabulous. Can be upgrated to 4 GB Memory. Amazon offers accessories when you purchase the computer – a bag and the additional memory. I did that and am very happy that I did. There is nothing that I don’t like about the computer. It is more than a Netbook. But smaller than a full size laptop. So light and easy to transfer from home to work etc. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Price is great also.

    An Acer Netbook Conspiracy??
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am wondering what is going on with the ACER 1410 series. I have been trying to get the red version of this netbook (AS1410-2954) and it has completely disappeared from any Amazon listing. They even removed it from my Wishlist! It had almost 20 comments so this seems very strange. Just a few months ago they had over a dozen versions of this netbook for sale and now they are essentially GONE from all merchants! I just now stumbled onto one website that showed it available so I put in my order. I will update this review after (if) I receive it. You can find hundreds of 10″ netbooks with 160 Gig drives in the $350 price range but the 1410 series has so much more with the 11.6″ screen, 250 Gig drive, and Win 7. Why have these things all disappeared??

Well, I got it, from B&H Photo (very quick & FREE ship)!!!

I have to say that I am very comfortable with Win XP and I certainly did not like Vista (sold that laptop). But Win 7 appears to be a worthy replacement.

I was a little shocked to see that Task Manager showed 800+ meg of ram being used after startup with “nothing” running. However, I was able to get this number down to 600 after removing all the bloatware and using MSconfig to disable a lot of unnecessary startup programs.

Certainly, $400 is getting into laptop pricing but these 11.6″ models are so far ahead of any 10″ netbook, it’s no contest. It is incredible that these models seem to be disappearing from all the major merchants (Amazon, Buy, Newegg, Tiger etc). They are such an incredible value with 2 gig ram, 250 gig drive, 11.6″ display, 6 hr runtime, Win 7.

    Pros

-I assumed this would have the same shell as my 11.6″ ACER AO751 (w/ Win XP) but this design contains the 6 cell battery much deeper into the housing so it doesn’t stick out the back at all.

-You can still squeeze this into the 10″ neoprene sleeve from Case Logic

    http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-Ultraportable-Neoprene-Notebook/dp/B0018LYCYK/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3DB8YQI29S8MZ&colid=24OG2H0A4T5GO

-Trackpad buttons are separate and not a toggle design (but the Logitech Nano mouse is the only way to go)

    -HDMI output is slick

-Very quality look and feel, slim and light, would have cost $2000, 5 years ago!!

    Cons:

-Both ram slots are occupied with 1 gig sticks, so you have to throw away at least one of these if you want to bump up the memory

-Wish I would have grabbed one of these when they were $299!!

    Nitpicking

-I use “HOME” and “END” alot, so I don’t like them as function keys.

-These netbooks all have a nice tiny charger/adapter but WHY do we need a clunky 3 conductor power cord?

-A lot of ‘trial’ software that has to be removed (but I suppose that allows ACER to cut prices).

-The display is glossy, the matt screens are much better (MSI’s)

OVERALL: Very Impressed – Incredible value!

    Laptop Power with Netbook Size
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My wife and I recently took a trip to Costa Rica.

Before I continue I would like to sidebar…

If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica, check out the blog she wrote on it, Tips when Traveling to Arenal Costa Rica (find it by Googling “ACER Aspire 1410 Review- Laptop Power with Netbook Size”, go to this review shown in the results, and then clicking on the link provided in this same paragraph). I think it should have been titled “Every single thing you need to know when Traveling to Arenal Costa Rica”

    End of sidebar…

We flew on an airline that only allowed a single carry on bag, which had to be less than 22 lbs. That meant my laptop went, or our camera equipment went.

With no TV in the first hotel for 4 days, we decided to look for a Netbook.

After doing an average amount of research, I decide to go with the ACER Aspire 1410.

    PROS:

    * Very light weight.

    * Battery power has not let me down yet.

    * I have loaded all the Microsoft Express version of Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 Express. That is enough for demos, for travel programming fun,

and looking at book examples. No issues with performance and I still have not upgrade to 4 GB of RAM.

    * Loaded all of Office 2007 and have no performance complaints.

    * Screen has a great resolution

    * Keyboard has bigger keys than my normal size laptop.

    * Has the full version of Windows 7 64 bit installed unlike other Netbooks I was looking at, which have the starter version. It is performing great!!!

    * Screen is slightly bigger than a normal netbook, which is just enough to get away from the feeling that I am watch a movie on my phone, like other

    netbooks gave me.

    * Price, you just can’t beat it.

    * Perfect for games. Easy to pass around.

    CONS:

    * Volumn is a little low. Overcame that with a set of external speakers (Logitech V20 Notebook Speakers (Black) )

    * Windows Media Player plays slow. I don’t think I can blame the laptop for than though, since VLC plays everything just fine.

All in all I highly recommend this little thing!!!

Some shots of it are included in the images on this product page. I have included a side by side with my 17 inch laptop, and some shots of code and

windows media player to give you an idea of screen real estate. The shots are not that great with respect to showing off the clarity of the screen, but

they give you an idea of what fits on it.

    A Competent Netbook/Notebook
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have the Acer Aspire AS410-2039, 11.6 inch, Black with Windows 7 Premium. Everything I have asked this little computer to do, it has done well – from Skype with video to photo editing with Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. It is fast and the screen is very sharp and clear. Acer has intelligently jumped the artificial barriers of Intel/Microsoft’s netbook specs.

I still consider it a Netbook and is a considerable advance over my Asus 701 with a 7″ screen. My new netboook is about 2 pounds lighter than my 15.3 inch laptop.

    Highly recommended.

    Keyboard Error
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
No need to comment on the pros, I concur with comments by other users. Though I need to express the way I enjoy using the touch pad with two fingers. It’s really cool

I have only used this device for four days, and I faced a problem with the keyboard. At first I thought it was keyboard language or regional settings, but after going through the settings, I could not fix the error.

Since the Netbook was new, I had no fear loosing data if I do a system restore, that didn’t work also.

Here is the error I am facing:

When I type r, 54r appears on the screen

When I type t, 74t appears on the screen

When I type o, -o0- appears on the screen

When I type p, -p[ appears on the screen

I tried both the on screen an external keyboards, they all worked without issues.

I called Acer Corporation, the customer representative was nice, he tried to help by giving me instructions, but that didn’t work either, so he asked me to send the Netbook to Texas for servicing.

I am currently in Africa, and shipping this device by express courier to and from Texas will now cost me more that the purchased cost.

I am still contemplating if it’s worth it. Be very careful folks! good to trust one companies like Toshiba, Dell, HP, Compaq, Sony etc.

    Amazing for the price
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this for my Mum for her Christmas because I wanted something that was small enough and light enough, but had a decent sized screen and a full sized keyboard. It will be her first laptop so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money this time.

I received the Acer 2 days after I ordered it, which was great. I’m now playing around with it and setting it up for her before she comes next week. I hadn’t used Vista or Windows7 before and I wasn’t too hopeful but so far I’ve been impressed. It seems very stable and quick to boot up and shutdown. I have a very expensive Dell laptop for work, and all this weekend when I’ve wanted to use the internet I’ve actually used the Acer as its faster than the Dell.

Battery life seems very good so far…. single charge and more than 5 hours and counting on this first charge. Despite the very low price it doesn’t feel cheap. My girlfriend has a Acer Aspire one, which she bought for 350USD a few months ago, and for the extra 50USD, there is no comparison.

The only negatives I had read in reviews was the mousepad but so far I’ve found it to be quite nice. The proof of the pudding will be whether my Mum can use it, so we’ll reserve final judgement on that till she’s played with it for a while.

I would have a really, really hard time convincing myself to spend any more money on a laptop after using this Acer for a few days. I work in the semiconductor industry so there’s a kind of conflict here for me…. it’s great you can get this functionality for this price, but it makes my job a lot tougher !

    The little computer that could
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received my Acer AS 1410-2039 yesterday and am quite pleased. I have been an HP fan but they don’t have anything that matches these specs at this price, just under $400. I purchased it with 2 gb of memory which seems to be adequate. If you are going to do heavy duty computing, I would get more memory but for email, letters, excel etc it is just fine. It is very light and the battery seems as though it will be good for the advertised 6 hrs. The fit and finish are excellent. Some do not like a shiney screen as it is difficult to use in bright light; this computer has one. The sound volume is not great and I suspect it will be difficult to hear in a loud room. My two complaints are the touch pad which has minimal definition: the area next to it is brushed metal and the touch pad itself is dull metal. The aesthetics are fabulous but a more defined touch pad would be more useful. My second complaint is a bit more serious. After I had started to customize the machine, by removing bloat ware ( there is very little of that ) and installed some programs, a pop up came up asking if I would like to make a backup restore disk. The information next to this said it should be done right away before programs have been installed. This information is correct; I was unable to make a set of backup disks. Acer will send them to you.

That aside, this is a terrific little computer which should work well travelling and as a bonus has wireless N as well.

I have a slightly different model, the 1410-2936, which has a more powerful dual-core Celeron SU2300 ultra-low-voltage CPU and a 160-gig hard drive. There are several variations of the 1410 around the $400 price point with varying combinations of CPU, hard drive, and RAM, but the rest of the computer is identical. Read the specs carefully before you make your choice.

I’ve installed Ubuntu on dozens of laptops and desktops in the last couple of years. Laptops can be problematic because of hardware oddities, but the Acer 1410 is an ideal, pain-free Ubuntu Linux platform.

I didn’t even boot Windows 7 — I inserted a 2-gig USB thumb drive containing the Ubuntu 9.10 installation image, and about 17-18 minutes later I was up and running with Karmic Koala installed on the hard drive.

It’s blazingly fast, especially when compared with my daughter’s Atom-powered Aspire One. With one exception, everything worked, slick and fast, right out of the gate — webcam, multi-card reader, USB, touchpad, display, wireless and wired networking, etc.

The one exception was the internal microphone. A bit of Googling revealed a one-line command (sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic) that fixed the microphone for everything except Skype. Then, once I unchecked Skype’s option to automatically set volume levels, the microphone started working, too.

The 11.6 size is a great compromise between the portability of a netbook and the usability of a notebook. The keys are full-size and the layout is sane. The screen is very, very sharp and the 1366-pixel display is wide enough for real work with multiple apps. Video performance is very good, handling Hulu’s Flash video quite well.

The smaller Atom-powered netbooks win the cuteness contest and can have longer battery life, but I think the 1410 is a much more practical package, and the best value for the price I’ve found anywhere.

    Better than I expected
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
On the scale of smart phones to dual core high-end laptops, I expected netbooks to end up closer to the smart phone end of the scale. I’m pleasantly surprized with this particular netbook (Celeron CPU, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD). It’s peppier than I expected even running Firefox 3.5.5 with about 15 add-ons and 15 or so tabs open. A lot of the slowness seems attributable to the wireless (802.11g) rather than to the weak CPU in the netbook. Perhaps they’ve balanced out both so that any slowness is shared between them.

Battery life seems on par with what was advertised. I’m conditioning the battery now and am on my 2nd cycle. I’m using the BatteryCare([...]) tray program to assist in this process.

Some of the software that came with the Acer netbook could’ve been left off from the beginning. MacAfee has already been removed and replaced with Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Works and the 60 day trial of Office 2007 Home and Student are about to go as well.

I’m trying to figure a way to get an image off of the harddrive so that I can play with a few different OSs (Ubuntu Netbook Remix, Google Chrome (such as it is not), etc.). I have Clonezilla on a flash drive but need a USB DVD burner.

Very useable – not a Netbook
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I will say upfront that I have a robust Acer Desktop Mini-tower as my primary PC so I don’t need a laptop with every bell and whistle. That being said, I am floored by the performance of this little Acer 1410. Its primary use is for linking to the client database I have running on a small server at my office. But it does so well with the fun things like streaming YouTube, Hulu and the web in general. I am not a gamer so I can’t comment there.

Windows 7 is clean and efficient feeling on this laptop, as if Vista and Ubuntu merged and only left the better parts. It works great so far grabbing wifi signals and even running Skype video calls.

The mouse pad pinching and scrolling feature is very helpful, iPhone-ish.

I guess I was expecting it to lag with only a 1.3 gHz Celeron but it does not let me down. The Atom equivalent seems much less capable in the Netbooks for some reason. If you are in the market for a Netbook and can stretch the extra $100, check this unit out.

    Great Netbook

This is a great netbook. No problems, battery lasts almost 6 hrs. It is nice to have the screen alittle bigger than the 10.2. It is also nice that is came with Windows 7 Home, instead of Starter!

    Netbook size, Laptop Power

I bought this because I didn’t like lugging around my 15 inch Dell. I looked at other net books but was disappointed with there performance. I use this mainly as an entertainment player when traveling. This plays all my AVI format TV shows and movies, plus You tube plays without the stutters that are normal on most other net books. The size and weight are perfect and the 11.6 screen is just large enough that you feel comfortable watching it, the 10.1′s are a bit small. I love it and would call this the pefect net book.

At 399.00 you can’t do better.

    Great little laptop(netbook)

This computer is perfect for me as a second computer. Small, light, nice keyboard, very nice screen, good battery life, and powerful enough for most everyday uses. I still have my big quad-core desktop machine, but I find myself using this little netbook more and more.

    Even Better Than I Expected
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have begun traveling more often for work, and though I like my Dell Laptop (Latitude D620) it is heavy, too large to use on an airplane and battery life leaves a lot to be desired. I initially looked at the Dell Inspiron 11z but reviews say the track pad is terrible and the 6 hour battery is huge and extends below the bottom of the back.

Then I found the Acer Aspire 1410. It has a screen that is the same size, a larger hard drive, and wireless n instead of just b & g. So basically I got more, all at a lower price. And the 6 hour battery doesn’t ruin the nice slim profile of the machine.

My plan was to just use this when traveling, primarily for web based apps (google docs and gmail, which work on and off line) and light stuff. But I’ve found that it runs everything including much heavier applications very well. Videos look great and it makes for a great entertainment machine on the road. Office works well, I’ve used the Gimp to edit photos and I’ve played some games.

There wasn’t much crud to uninstall and I’ve been very pleased with Windows 7. The machine boots quickly and I’m up and running in no time. Wireless is great, the sound is good and I love the display. I usually dim it down when on the road to maximize battery life, but it still looks pretty good. When hooked up to power, it can be very bright and looks very good.

I’m not crazy about the glossy screen, though I’m getting used to it. I don’t like the glossy black of the case either and am looking for a skin. As of right now it’s a fingerprint magnet and looks like I rubbed a stick of butter all over it.

But it runs all my apps great and has exceeded my expectations for such a compact and affordable machine. I find that I’m using it all the time, not just when I travel. It’s awesome how light and compact it is but still doing everything I need.

    EXCELLENT PRODUCT
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Purchased this notebook as an alternative to a netbook. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium and a 60-trial version of McAfee internet security. My only complaint is that the notebook came with 2GB of memory USING 2x 1GB modules filling both slots. I purchased a 2GB module to upgrade to 3GB. Other than that minor issue, the product is light, very well made, and yes Windows 7 does seem more stable and much faster than my Vista system. I highly recommend this notebook if you are looking for a little more horsepower and storage space than a netbook. Like the netbooks, this system has no CD/DVD drive so you will need an external USB device to load software, watch DVDs etc.

Perfect laptop for a Perfect price
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As a small internet business owner, I needed a laptop that is portable and reliable. I originally started looking at the 10″ netbooks, but found them to be too small and I hated that they only ran the Windows 7 Starter version which has some major restrictions. This 11.6″ laptop has a decent size screen and a nice size keyboard. I was deciding between this and the HP, but when you customize the HP to have all the same specs as this Acer, the cost was over $800 so this became a no-brainer.

I’ve had my Acer for about 1 month now and it is great. Windows 7 takes a little getting used to, but I’ve had no issues with it at all. I hooked it up to a wireless network printer without incident and it wasn’t loaded with a ton of garbage-ware. My only issue was that it only comes with the student/home trial version of MS Office, and I am an Outlook user. The entire office suite is expensive, so instead I tried Mozilla Thunderbird which is free and it works just as well as Outlook. Once my trial period for the MS Office software is up, I will purchase it for only $149 and keep Thunderbird as my email client which will save me a pretty penny.

Amazon had this laptop out to me in 3 days with free shipping (HP charged $35 for shipping).

If you are looking for a “net-book” with all the capabilities of a regular sized laptop, I highly recommend this Acer.

    Aspire 1410

Acer Aspire AS1410-2497 11.6-Inch Blue Laptop – Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) All in all great machine. However, be aware that this model sports a single core processor. The newer dual-core model with increased performance is model number 1410-2801 (with a smaller 160GB drive). Consider upgrading the internal hard drive to a larger WD WD6400BEVT 640GB. Have fun!

    Great 3rd gen netbook
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Pros- comfortable keyboard, HDMI and RAM expandable to 4GB

Cons- processing speed, no 3g wireless. The included ram is 2 1gb sticks, so you have to get 2 new 2gb sticks to max it out. The outside of the lid has a smooth texture so it covered in gets fingerprints but that’s very minor.

Overall great for a 3rd gen netbook and I actually do own this.

    Fantastic netbook
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Considering the specs, that it comes with Win 7 Home Premium, and the price, this is a fantastic little machine. I wanted to use this for a perhaps slightly different purpose than most netbook users. I am a photographer and really wanted the ability to check photos in the field. Making sure things are in focus, for example, is often important because I do a lot of macro photography. It’s impossible to really tell on a camera LCD how the image has turned out. I own an older laptop, but it’s just too darn heavy to lug around all the time. I was a bit worried that the resolution of a 10-inch netbook would be too low to see good detail but with this netbook and its bright, higher-res screen, the details are all visible and the photos look great. Not that it would replace my desktop, but that’s not its intended purpose. That said, it’s useless in full sunlight but if you can find any sort of shady spot, it’s pretty good. A lot of my work is done indoors anyway. I’ve found I have to crank up the screen brightness outdoors and that helps a lot. That probably would affect battery life, but I don’t anticipate running out of power on a typical shoot anyway.

Of course, I’ve only had the thing for one day, so I can’t comment yet on reliability. It does run pretty fast and boots up quickly, so no complaints on performance. I don’t intend to put Photoshop on it since I just want it for review purposes and Windows Photo Viewer is perfectly adequate for that. Unfortunately, my camera uses Compact Flash cards and there’s no built-in reader for them, so I have to use an external USB reader. One more thing to carry, but I can live with it. Not a huge amount of crapware on this machine and what there was was easily removed.

The only other con (common to all netbooks) is that there’s no CD/DVD writer. I have yet to figure out how I’d restore the system without one if the hard drive ever had to be replaced. Apparently there’s some way to use a USB thumb drive but haven’t figured that out. I just decided to order a USB CD/DVD writer. Don’t think I’ll need it much but it will just make life easier – not only for disaster recovery but for any software installations I might do.

All in all, I’m pretty happy so far.

Netbook or Notebook? Rose by another name!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Technically a Notebook according to Intel and Microsoft, but priced like a Netbook. Intel and Microsoft won’t allow more than 1G DRAM and 160G of HDD in a Netbook and they MUST load Windows 7 Starter and they MUST have an ATOM.

If it is a “Notebook”, based on a Celeron, there aren’t any restrictions and they are ALLOWED to pay extra and load Windows 7 Home. In this case, it looks like Acer made a great deal on Win 7 Home and the Celeron big brother to the ATOM. Plus it has just enough better graphics to run Win 7 home. Most ATOM 270 or 280 units don’t have the graphics strength.

Maybe it’s just marketing on Intel’s part, but look up the ATOM and Celeron family trees in Wikipedia to better understand what is going on here.

This is a rose by another name and such a deal!

Another option is the Acer AS1410-2285 which has a dual core Celeron but a 160GB hard drive instead of 250GB. It’s a trade off, but either is a good buy vs. the typical netbooks that are available with Win 7 starter. The Acer units have twice the DRAM, a little bigger screen, a “real” Win 7 O.S. and much better graphics than any of the similarly priced netbooks.
