This netbook has the best keyboard of all models I could find to try out in local stores (before buying on Amazon), and an especially good-looking metallic blue exterior. The 3-cell battery means you’re trading battery life for lighter weight, and I’m happy with that. The screen is too reflective, though, almost mirror-like. I’m looking for a non-reflective screen cover.

Haven’t used this a lot but I love it. Did buy a cheap mouse for it and that makes it easier. The screen is a perfect size and it is easy to use.

Netbook for my wife
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This was a present for my wife and she hasn’t used it yet. I find that it’s too small for my taste but it does seem to work OK and it did come with XP which , in my mind, is still better than VISTA or 7.
I’m sure she’ll get around to using it in the kitchen as she had planned.

My 1st notebook & wireless computer. It compliments our two desktops for travel due to it’s size. Once you get used to the small screen (downgrade resolution for older people), it works great. Recommend a wireless mouse and 8 GB flash memory to download programs. Needless to say the software is stuffed with “trial” apps much like those annoying postcards in magazines. One of the few new computers you can get with XP.

Bought this laptop for my daughter. She requested the netbook size, but after a month she still uses my laptop. The product performs as advertised. There have been no problems. My rating reflects my opinion that the netbook size is too small. The only issue I have is with all the preloaded programs that stifle performance. If you buy this laptop I would immediately delete all the bloatware that is pre loaded. Overall for the money it was a good purchase for my 8 year old. For an adult it seems too small for my tastes. The flip side of that is that the laptop is ultra portable and battery life is pretty good. If you want a little laptop this one has worked well for us.

Got this for my small low-tech girlfreind so she could email and facebook without haveing to go into my office and use the desktop. She loves it, the wireless connection is completely automatic and the batteries last long enough for a session on the couch when she forgets to plug in. It is pretty quick with her photos and the display is nice. She thinks it is cute.

Bought this Netbook for my teenage daughter for the holidays and she simply loves it! It does everything she needed it to do: Access emails and social network sites, look up information online to help her with homework and browse the web in general.
Please note this is NOT a laptop! There is no disk drive and the screen/keyboard are smaller, but for her the lightweight and easy transport more than makes up for it. The HD is large enough to store all of her media, just it needs to be connected to a PC or an external CD/DVD Drive to move the information around.
I strongly recommend an external mouse as well
Good product overall, GREAT product for the price!

Pleasantly Surprised
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This was my first time purchasing or even using a netbook. Got this for my wife for Christmas who just needed her own laptop to surf with. She spends most of her time online so I didn’t need a very powerful computer, and thought she would appreciate the portability. Well, I never really understood the whole netbook thing but after having it around for a month, I can honestly say that it has come in very handy. Extremely portable, powerful enough to do just the basic things you need, and very well made. I’ve heard good things about these Acer netbooks and I would certainly recommend this to someone who was in the market for one of this. As of right now, I have no real ‘cons’. Just two minor issues. I prefer a bigger screen (but this is a netbook so you can’t complain about screen size), and the keyboard is a bit cramped.

I love my netbook. It does (almost) everything I need it to do and it fits right in my bag with my textbooks. I think the only thing I would trade in is the battery life and the fact that it doesn’t take disks. I bought it for myself as a Christmas present. So far so good.

I was leery of ordering after reading some of the negative reviews, but CompUSA had a price too good to pass up. Delivery was `fast’ and the netbook has an extremely slim profile. It operated right out of the box but I gave it a full run through after charging the battery.
First the good points: The wireless card picks up signals that my Dell Inspiron couldn’t. The keypad is comfortable enough to type, although it is small. The touch pad has the ability to enlarge the display for those of us whose eyes aren’t what they used to be. I received an excellent upload/download speed test 100′ away from my modem. It doesn’t come with a CD drive, but, if you have a desktop or laptop with a CD drive you can copy programs onto a flash drive, then install them on the netbook. The internal webcam works very well.
Here’s the negative points: The battery life is short but that’s to be expected considering the size of the battery. The speakers are somewhat `tinny’, but again that’s to be expected. They are loud enough to clearly hear my YouTube videos. The touchpad is small so an inexpensive mouse is advisable.
All in all I am pleasantly surprised. If it does act up I will update the posting.

Good but lackluster
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned this netbook for 6 months now, and my experience with it has been good overall. Like most other netbooks, this one has a 160GB harddrive, 1GB DDR3, no optical drive, and otherwise fairly minimalistic features, which is fine if what you want is a super-portable laptop with basic functionality, like web browsing, word processing, etc. This computer is perfectly suitable for those tasks, and with a $286 price tag, it’s hard to go wrong.
There have been no glaring flaws with this computer, but instead small inadequacies that make it worth 3 stars (average, servicable) instead of 5 stars (excellent). A shortlist:
-The battery. It’s kind of ironic that a laptop whose main selling point is portability can’t be used without its charger for more than 3 hours. Other, slightly more expensive Acer netbooks have 6-8 hour battery lives. If you’re planning on using this without the charger very often, I would recommend getting a model with a better battery life. On the other hand, 3 hours of battery life might be perfectly suitable for some users.
-The build. The computer is decently stable (the hinges on the lid are particularly satisfactory), but from what I can tell, there is a *lot* of plastic used in this computer’s design. Compared to my brother’s Macbook, it feels absolutely cheap (which, I guess it probably is). Something to think about if you’re planning on lugging it around campus, or the like.
-Appearance. This might be my weakest point yet, but it seems to me that very little consideration was given to style when making this netbook. For one thing, the keys (which are 88% of standard size) seem scrunched up and are rather protrusive. Some other netbooks have keys that are slightly bigger and flatter, which I feel lends a more aesthetic look. There’s also a long gap between the screen and the base when the computer is open, which isn’t a problem, but…it almost makes the computer seem toy-like. It seems like a little more attention to detail would have made an appreciably more aesthetic netbook.
These are just observations; I’m by far not disappointed with the computer. My expectations have mostly been met, and there haven’t been any problems. In retrospect though, I would have gotten something like the Asus Eee, which has the same specifications, but some finer details that I find lacking in the Acer. Overall, a fine product that leaves you wanting just a little bit more.

I purchased this netbook for my 13 year old daughter. She had the machine up and running within 15 minutes after she opened it and that includes the time to download her “necessary” programs – AIM, Facebook, My Space. The machine is perfect for what she uses it for. My only complaint would be the battery life – she said she gets around 2.5 hours between charges.

I bought this for my son and was very surprised at how well this computer operates. For being so small and inexpensive, it will do most of everything that you would do with a regular laptop. Only bad part is not having a cd-rom, but not that big of a deal since you can hook it up to an external drive.

Bought a netbook after seeing it demonstrated on TV. Went to a major retail store and found one by another brand and it was cheaper and it was purple. Okay – lured in by the color. Anyway, had both for about a week and sent the first one packing back to the place that sent it and kept the Acer. The other one got way too hot, cost more and was shipped without Works as advertized and customer service to try to get it from the manufacturer sucked!! My brother came to visit and played with my Acer just a bit and decided that he would get one and he did. He went back to Colorado and my Dad played with it a bit and he bought one. Both love them. Dad called Geek Squad and got his tweeked to adapt to his macular degeneration and is now supremely happy with it.
Due to a small inheritance, I decided that I would get 3 of these for my 3 grandsons so shopped around to find the best deal I could get – before Christmas and in time that I could get them and tweek them a bit for the boys. Found them here on amazon.com, ordered 3 (black, red, and blue) and they seemed to arrive before I ordered them – it was that fast. We opened presents on the 22nd since I travelled to them for part of the holidays. The reactions from them were even more than I expected. Two of them will turn 12 in Jan. & Feb and the youngest is 9 and they got on these and stayed on these. Fortunately there was available WiFi at my son’s home. They respond much faster than my son’s bigger laptop. I thought mine did but proved it to myself after downloading itunes on 2 of the netbooks and then trying to download on the laptop – finally gave up on the laptop.
I highly recommend these little netbooks. I might get a bigger battery for mine but not gonna upgrade on the boys as that will be one way to make sure they go outside every once in awhile and get their noses out of the computer. Even with the battery I currently have, I find that I plug in most of the time at home anyway so really don’t need the battery. As far as a disc drive, bought a little external one that has a dvd writer that my home pc doesn’t have. I am a happy camper and again – recommend these highly.

Acer Aspire delivers
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Decision to purchase a netbook was made in consideration of what my son and daughter each wanted for this Christmas: An ipod Touch. After looking at the Touch and noting that the only interface to the device was through iTunes, I opted out. Sure, the Touch is sexy and sleek, but many reviewers complained that Apple in effect controls your use of the Touch through iTunes, so your “ownership” is not what you think it is. I didn’t like this unnecessary restriction so looked for something else.
Then I had an idea to purchase something a little more useful. My children said they wanted the Touch to listen to music and surf the web. So I thought to myself, for about the same price I can get them a netbook which does the same thing and more with a larger screen. After reading reviews of the Acer and other brands, I decided to have the children try out some of the brands at a local electronics store to get a feel for their use. They loved Acer’s sleek design and its overall feel. My next step was to purchase: One came from Amazon and one from another source since at that time the black one was priced too high at Amazon. (I don’t understand why Amazon does this and so frequently.)
I am content with the purchase. I specifically wanted Windows XP with SP3 because my children like the interface and because I knew it well myself. For my son there was another benefit to using XP: He was able to load and run a school copy of Autocad for his drafting class. While the 3-D is pretty slow, the 2-D works fine. He is extremely happy that he can use his netbook at home for his drafting class activities using this tool. (BTW, Autocad has problems with Vista and is not fully supported on Windows 7 yet, hence the need for XP.)
My only complaint (and hence not 5 stars) is the relatively low battery life. You can get about 2 hours even when disabling the WiFi. But the rest is fine: The screen looks good, the speed is adequate, it is not too hard to get used to the smaller keyboard, the webcam is OK, and at about 3 lbs it is extremely portable. Sound quality is poor but for this price you can’t ask for much; good headphones can be had at good prices nowadays.
Bloatware is present but easy to remove. Comes with McAfee trial version which I promptly uninstalled using AppRemover. Because of the WiFi connectivity, it is important to protect your computer as much as possible. Some good free options are Online Armor (firewall), Avira Personal (anti-virus), and Spybot S&D (for adware). Lots of other free goodies available including: OpenOffice, Firefox, FoxItReader (for Acrobat files), [...], 7-Zip, etc.
In summary, for about the same price as a Touch you can get a nice netbook that does much more without giving up your control to another company. Choosing the XP operating system was important for me, especially in light that it supports Autocad and Windows 7 Starter is intentionally restricted. Performance and features are adequate for the price. It is extremely portable and useful; met the needs of the kids and they couldn’t be happier.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Ive had mine a couple of months so far and love it. It’s faster to start up than any of my other machines, and faster to sleep, stand by or hibernate as well. XP Home runs totally smoothly and supports everything I need, which on this machine (bought chiefly as a traveling companion) isn’t much. I have Firefox, Open Office, NOD32 anti-virus, Zone Alarm firewall, Visual Studio 6 (still have some work on that!) and can connect to my work machine with ASG when I need to. It’s just a great little machine.
On a trip to England lately, I went into a computer store to ask about the voltage issue: I had been trying to charge through a transformer – did not know that most charger units now accept either the 110-120 of the US or the 220-240 of the UK, so all you need is the plug connector. When I put the Acer on the table, a shop staffer grinned and said “Swap you!” It was much admired.
I see some people have had trouble with breakdowns: guess I will just hope I am not one of the unlucky few. There are only a very few minor things that are less than perfect, and some have to be common to many or all netbooks. The screen’s vertical depth of 600 pixels is less than most screens are designed for in the wide-screen format (usually 800) so I do a bit more vertical scrolling than usual to see all the screen content (which is very sharp and crisp, by the way). The touchpad is OK but sometimes a little quirky – but I usually can connect an optical mouse anyway. And the brightness/clarity of the screen display is very sensitive to your position relative to it vertically – not so much horizontally – not an issue for yourself as the only user, but needs attention if others are looking at it with you.
Definitely a keeper!

They will fix them if you want to go through the hassle of mailing it in. In my opinion, for something that is mainly used to surf the web, there is no reason why it should have problems so soon after we purchased them. Don’t waste your money!

Comparison with MSI wind u100 netbook
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R103YI077K47CT A comparison between the Acer aspire one and the MSI wind u100-451us.Both the Acer and MSI are extremely similar. I’ve had the MSI wind for a year or so, and just bought the Acer as a gift for my boyfriend. My father has this same model Acer for about a year now, so I was confident in picking this brand.
A couple things I did forget to mention. The Acer did have more “bloatware” (McAfee Internet Security Suite trial version; Google Desktop; Carbonite Online Backup; Acer GridVista) on it then the MSI wind, so I did remove a couple programs. This is really personal preference. Some people like to have as much as possible to get new software and try new programs. I like a bare bones netbook so I can add things according to my needs without really taking up much hard drive space. Both have 160GB hard drive. The Acer is a tad bit thinner when closed, but the MSI is listed at 2.3 lbs, while the Acer is 2.4 lb.
They have the very same video processor, though I said in my video I thought the Acer had a bit better video quality. This really could just have been the videos I watched (and the quality of them), not necessarily the video capabilities of the netbooks. Both are in fact available in white. The MSI wind wins for me based on the slightly larger keyboard and the matte screen.

I needed a small, lightweight netbook with an easy-to-use keyboard and an easy to read screen– and an easy to take price– and that is what I got. I bought a Denali carrying case for it that was on sale at Target, and together they cost about $300. I took the Acer with me on a trip to Barbados and it worked perfectly in the hotel’s WiFi area. The only problem I ever have is that the built-in mouse pad is over-sensitive to my touch– but maybe my touch is too heavy! With a memory stick (the case has a pouch to carry such things)I am able to transfer items back and forth from my home and office desktops.

Service, Service, Service
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The computer is fairly nice, but as many people have written the touch pad is not very good. My main concern is the service that Acer supplies. I received our computer and it had a couple of issues. Burning the restore DVD’s did not work – and finally had to resort to burning CD’s (nine CD’s). Acer does not supply restore disks but will sell them to you for $20 (pretty crazy)
The big problem is with a small broken hinge cover piece. Acer will not respond to requests to repair. They have no phone number you can call and all they give you is run around. If you want cheap and dont care about service, then this is the company for you.

Spent some time doing a system restore and tried to see what all of the fuss was about. This machine is so slow it is unusable, must have a bad hard drive. Not even worth my time to try and contact support, try going to the Acer website and you instantly feel a level of frustration that just doesn’t exist with other name brands in my opinion.

dies in 6 months
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have purchased 3 Acer Netbooks. When the hard drive on the first one died in six months, I thought it was just a fluke. Now, number 2 is on the same death trajectory. It starts with the hard drive initially emitting a loud death rattle, which in turn becomes a steady humming. Then it either cannot make a network connection or becomes so slow one thinks one is still on dial up. The price is dandy and they sure are cute, but disposable cameras have a longer life span. Invest in something a little more expensive until you find it exciting to buy a new computer every six months.

good secondary netbook for the price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this exact same Acer from Target when it was 199.00. This is the cheapest price around. Other places were selling it for 250.00 and up.(Wal-Mart was selling it for $225.)
This one came with the N270 processor, and 1 GB of ram. Other netbooks may have tne N280 processor and 1.66ghz (so are little faster). You can remedy this by upgrading the ram to 2 GB and this is what I did as soon as I took it home.
It will cost you about 50US$. I bought a Kingston. There is only one slot so you have to buy a 2GB memory module. This is definitely worth it. Try selling the 1 GB on Craigslist.
Upgrading is Super easy. I’m a total novice. (Previous Acers – it was very difficult but not these newer models). I did it in less than 10 minutes. I found a website that had the video and it was so simple. (So for 250$, I have a very good inexpensive secondary computer)
I have 3 websites open and i’m running windows media listening to web radio. I also played some Youtube videos – very fast and no problem streaming the video. Absolutely no problem. Speakers are fine. I don’t know if I kept the 1GB if memory it would be as easy. I have no problem getting Wifi reception.
The keyboard is 88% size of desktop keyboards compared with other netbooks which are 92%. (So this might be a problem for people with big fingers).
Some people mabye tempted to upgrade to Windows 7. However XP works great. If you do upgrade – then definitely get 2 GB of ram and bypass “Windows 7 Starter” – it’s not worth it.
It would get 5 stars but the pixel resolution is 1024×600 (which most netbooks have). However it would be nice if it had 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. For those who want to know the model does not have “Bluetooth”.
REMEMBER – THESE NETBOOKS DO NOT HAVE A CD/DVD DRIVE.
Bottom line: This a very good computer for the price. As a secondary computer for emailing, limited work purpose it’s definitely worth it.

I love this netbook! I got it on Black Friday special and have only had a day to play with it but so far so good. It does come with Windows XP (bummer) and only 1 GB of ram but I immediately upgraded both. My other laptop used the same ram and upgraded it to 4 GB (from 3 GB) a while back.
Lucky for me I saved that ram and used the 2 GB stick in the machine. The details of this item page says the max ram is 1.5 GB. I don’t know how that is possible because I have never seen a 1.5 GB stick of ram and this machine only has one slot.
Had no problems with this netbook with Windows 7. In fact Acer sells a version of this machine Windows 7 Starter on it. In fact I think it runs better then Windows XP.
So far so good, I am even considering adding a GSM card to use it on AT&T 3G you can buy them after market for a lot cheaper then buy a netbook with one it already.

Got this at Target for a deal during their pre-Thanksgiving sale. Remove Win XP and downloaded Win 7. Seriously, it’s not worth paying so much more for a Win Starter when I could just do it on my own. Like XP but Win 7 is much better! Vista was a flop and takes up too much RAM.
Tested it and ran beautifully. The only downside is — battery life and adding 1 GB of RAM would not be a bad idea.
But then again, I am only using the netbook for traveling, processing docs etc. So, for the price plus a free case, I can’t complain. Of course, it’s my secondary comp. So, users — if you have Win 7, just buy the XP edition which will be considerably cheaper and upgrade it to Win 7. Runs like a champ!!!

I purchased two of these for my sister-in-law’s two little girls. I was surprised by how well they worked. This computer is light weight, it’s small but not too small, and the keyboard seems perfect for little fingers. The mouse pad and button aren’t that great but we got the girls retractable mice* to use instead.
The only real downer is that the battery lasts only 2-2.5 hours. If you need a better battery, you might want to consider another Acer for more money:

Make sure you add the right memory to your unit! The Acer will be faster if you give it more ram.

Great, for what it is….

This netbook has a lot of advantages-
Windows XP: a proven operating system- I tolerate Vista, and will not even consider Windows 7 for at least another year; gotta let all the eager beavers beta test it first.
Light weight, easily packed for travel. We purchased the netbook for our son to take with him during deployment. (Built in webcam- just add Skype.)
INTEL Atom processor- this processor is streamlined and fast moving for it’s size.
Cost- for the money, one cannot purchase much more. I have read concerns about the battery life between charges- how many users are actually that far from a power source? If so, what about purchasing a second OEM battery for less money than the 6 cell?
Disadvantages- this computer should be selling for aroung $200 out the door. If it was, Acer would corner the netbook market.

I’ve read about this computer on several websites. Amazon.com had the best price. I bought this thing on June 17. By mid-July the screen started to flicker and then died. I troubleshooted this problem by plugging it into my TV proving that it was the LCD screen that had died in less than 1 month. I used my warranty and I had to pay to send it to their service center in Texas. When I got the computer back the screen flickered the same day I got it, so I sent it back to them. The second time I got the computer back the left side hinge for the LCD screen was broken and obviously gouged with a screw driver and it was missing one of the rubber legs on the bottom, so I sent it in again……. I got it back today. Having owned this computer for just over 4 months, only being able to use if for roughly 2 months, they repaired the hinge and replaced the rubber leg with a SMALLER ONE. Now it does not even sit balanced. Very disappointed in Acer. This is my FORTH Acer computer since 1998 and am very disappointed not only in this computer but their repair service. I hope all my writing here helps someone.

Had all kinds of problems trying to make wireless sync work. Worked one minute, not the next. Finally gave up, returned it, got the AOD150 with 6 hour battery instead. That one is great. Most Acer techs don’t know what they’re doing though so it’s very frustrating if you have a problem, especially if it’s something like wireles sync which is a feature of the product but techs say they aren’t trained for it, know nothing about it and can’t help with it. I think I’ve talked to about 10 and only 2 knew what they were doing.

Locks up starting Windows… Tech Support recommended ‘factory re-starts’ twice. This is the 3rd time that it locks up since July 2009… since ‘factory re-starts’ erases everything I had loaded in my Netbook, they are not a real solution. Netbook on the way to Acer Repair Center… no time provided as to how long to investigate/repair problem.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a great computer if you already have a desktop at home and just need something for on the go. It is very small and lightweight, which is great if you are like me and have to carry around an already heavy backpack all the time. The keyboard is pretty similar in feel to a normal keyboard compared to other netbooks that I have used. The only real downsides are the performance capabilities and the lack of CD/DVD drive, but there are plenty of ways around both of those if you have another computer. I recommend this computer to anyone who wants a small companion computer

Great netbook!!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Bought this as a late birthday present for $298 at Walmart and was thuroughly impressed;
Pros;
Speed, out of the box (after first set up) is quite fast, boot up time was less then 30 seconds. After removing all the unnecasary junk (original virus program was a memory hog) and did some tweaks in the msconfig program I can boot it up in about 23 seconds x)
Portability, I have had this machine for about a month now and have been able to take it ANYWHERE its very light weight and very compact.
Extras, YAY FOR DOO DADS!! this netbook came with a very nice little 1.3mp camera as a default item and it works like a charm.
Keyboard, Whats the point of having a portabable computer if you can’t type on it? do a spreadsheet or two? send an e-mail? Luckily this keyboard is VERY well done including a FULL shift key. Excellent fro browsing (as a matter of fact I’m using it to write this review)
Mouse, If you’ve done your research, you’ll see that alot of the other netbooks hav the annoying touchpad with the left and right buttons on the left and right side of the touchpad. This netbook has one bar under the touchpad that clicks left or right x) VERY well designed.
cons;
Battery life, the battery life on this is moderatly poor about 2-2.5 hours on a charge, I ended up buying a 6 cell for 59 bucks and it lasts about 6-7 hours x)
GLOSSY SCREEN!! what more can I say? the screen is a fingerprint MAGNET!!
If you don’t mind the fingerprints on the laptop or the battery life (or are planning on buying a 6cell) then this laptop is PERFECT for you!

this is a terrific product. your shipping policies “free ship” are a sham, and will hurt you. no mail order customer wants to wait 16 days from purchase for delivery, as you eventually promised on this item. free ship needs to mean something…in your instance it means…ship when we feel like it…you’ll get it when you get it. that’s mail order of 30 years ago. i know because i operated a consumer mail order company for 25 years. you also failed to deliver on your promise to follow this shipment and notify me of it’s status. i never received any further contact from

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Very happy with this unit. It does everything I need to do for my work. I have used it as a replacement for my 4+years notebook . Actually it is faster and has more RAM. The size is definitely a plus over the other computer and makes it easy to carry around. Only negative feeling I have is that had I known that Acer had a model with an 11.6 inch screen and higher resolution I would have ordered that instead. I use mine probably 2 to 3 hours per day. Just curious, has anybody else used it as a replacement for a standard notebook PC? Overall it is a very nice machine.

Acer netbook
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook for my son so he can look up his homeworks (math, science, social studies) online. I had a 17 inch HP w/ Vista before and it broke about 2 months ago. Same specs except size and processor speed. We love the portability of this netbook. It was quite a task carrying my 17 incher around airports. Windows XP sp3 is faster than Vista and is just right for e-mailing, word processing etc.. So it has been running smoothly w/o any need to reboot. I picked Acer over ASUS because of the price, otherwise, would have bought ASUS. Only con is the battery life. We’ll have to purchase the 6- hour battery.

This netbook is just the right weight and size for travel or for those of us with limited space. While of course you make some trade-offs for this convenience, the minor features sacrificed don’t really affect the utility of this product. Wireless network card didn’t work right out of the box
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I used my home network’s Ethernet buss to do most of the setup, and everything was working fine … until I came to the wireless network card. I moved the momentary-contact switch to the right and the on-screen icon and flashing led indicated the wireless card was “working”. Problem was, it wouldn’t detect my network wireless signal. The so-called instruction manual was of no use whatsoever. Just to make sure it wasn’t a network glitch I ran my Dell and Toshiba laptops right along side the ACER. They both came up and instantly latched onto the wireless signal. I wasted a couple of hours running the troubleshooting software that was onboard the computer … to no avail. Still wouldn’t detect my network. I took the cute little beastie back to Wal-Mart and got a refund. This was my first experience with ACER … and it will probably be my last.

Great for what it’s meant to be used for.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I went to a local Fr*’s to play around with a bunch of netbooks before deciding on one. HP definitely had a nicer keyboard, and there are other brands like MSI with non-glossy screens (much better choice than the annoying glossy screens many netbooks come with, including this one).
But, I needed to go with an open standard device. I don’t really trust some of the big name companies to not do something strange with the BIOS, and since Acer tends to leave relatively “generic” settings for everything, I went for it. I have no proof of any of this, by the way. It’s just how I felt.
And why is that important? Because I need to run FreeBSD on it.
This is what I did after getting the device.
1) Boot, clean out as much junk as possible (useless games, antivirus, advertisement software, etc.) Note I did not register Windows since I am not going to use it.
2) Update BIOS. Mine came with version 1.03. Acer site had 1.07. I know they fixed some quirks with screen brightness not being saved properly and what not. Their BIOS update software is a Windows program. This is the only reason I bothered to boot Windows.
3) Remove the HDD completely! I don’t need it! It’s just an extra weight to me. Note mine was Hitachi. Apparently, many different brands were found to be used by Acer. I hoped for Western Digital or Seagate, but oh well.
4) Copied over a working a FreeBSD 7-STABLE environment from my desktop into a Transcend 16GB SDHC card. One needs to set up the boot sector, and just tar over important system files (/, /usr, /var, etc.), and modify system config files like /etc/fstab, rc.conf, etc. Note, I did not set up swap. Even fully loaded with software I use (gimp, Firefox, avidemux, wine & some Windows programs like Canon Digital Photography Professional, etc.), there’s almost 10GB worth of space left over for user files.
5) Put the SDHC card in the slot, go into BIOS (F2 at boot), change the boot order to point to the card first < - not necessary if you remove the HDD, and voila! Boots right off the SDHC card. It's pretty darn fast, too.
Note: FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE does not have alc driver needed for the Atheros wired network device. Wireless is fine (ath driver). I needed both, so I used -STABLE. 8.0 will also have all the necessary drivers. Even the USB webcam is detected, although I have no idea what to do with it. I don’t know if sleep works. I don’t really care. I just needed a light weight, low cost device to bring with me when I travel.

Keyboard could be larger
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This netbook is perfect for doing some work on a plane or in a coffee shop.
I haven’t noticed performance differences with a full-size notebook when doing word-processing tasks or web browsing.
A couple of negative points:
– the keyboard could have been larger, like in a similar HP Mini 110 netbooks
– pictures in a browser and Windows viewers look stretched. Researching the issue I found that it’s a problem with the aspect ratio of 1.78:1 instead on 1.7:1 in 10″ netbooks.

Adequate, tiny, and cheap
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Aspire One D250-1165 (1.6GHz, 1GB memory, 160GB disk) is about as much laptop as you can get for $299. The touchpad is tiny and hard to find in the dark but the keyboard is just big enough to touch-type on, and I have gigantic hands. The machine is very light and easy to hold; when it’s closed it’s tiny and when it’s open it’s still pretty darned small. You can hold it by the hinge as if it were an open book and have an fantastic grip on it.
I’m running Jolicloud Linux Alpha 2 and it runs very well, so this machine may also attract hobbyists, some of whom have already modified this system with compact flash storage (replacing the winchester drive) and made other modifications. The webcam is totally adequate for video chat, works well in low-light situations as promised, and works great under Linux as well.
If you plan to be on the go frequently, consider purchasing a model with a 5500 mAh battery instead of the 2200 mAh. As you might imagine, it dramatically increases runtime. With a little care it is possible to actually get about two and a half hours out of this system, which is pretty fantastic for the small size of the system and its power supply.

Good, lightweight solution, if you prune the apps installed
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It’s a nice. lightweight, small computer with a good keyboard and display. Performance is miserable if you leave the spurious applications that came with it. After uninstalling McAfee, the nonsense games and software sales pitches and resetting the browser settings, including the home page setting, it works very well. Of course, it would work better if it did not have Vista — October will show if Win 7 helps.
Good luck.

Track Pad is Awful.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Overall, this is a perfectly decent netbook. But the trackpad is really, really awful. Maybe its due to being a Mac guy, and used to Mac trackpad’s, but I really found this one almost unusable. Hard to control, overly sensitive at times, the button is way to hard to click… really, not a positive thing I can say about it. Right on the verge of shipping the unit back because of it.
Granted, overall its a pretty nice little netbook. Plenty light, decent form factor, etc etc. But in case I haven’t been clear enough, I just cannot get past the trackpad.

Beyond Expectations
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been looking at a netbook for a couple of years but just wasn’t sure it was what I wanted. I decided to sell my mac and started looking again for a smaller laptop. My husband talked me out of it saying that my HP was fine and I didn’t need it. Well to my surprise two days later a netbook arrived in the mail. Happy Birthday!
I love this netbook (I have the pink one). First thing I did when I pulled it out of the box was install a 2GB stick of RAM. Then I wiped the hard drive clean and did a dual boot with XP and Vista. (Don’t forget to make your recovery discs!!) Getting the hard drive formatted took some hard work, and I had to use a linux install disk to get it wiped clean. But now it runs beautifully!
It runs Vista really well and doesn’t make it hot or over work at all. I’ve really not used the XP size but imagine it runs smoother than Vista. I love everything about it. I have no complaints. I will be looking for a 6 cell battery to give me some more life. I think you just have to realize that you can be just as rough with these netbooks as an actual laptop.
Note: If you change the paritions and then try to use the recovery disks it will not work. The recovery disks are made to read the harddrive the way it was when factory install. I spent three days getting my netbook back up and running. I’d just stay away from the recovery disks all together. I’m now running Windows 7 and love it!

I love this computer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I spent a lot of time comparison shopping, especially between this computer and the HP with similiar specs. A lot of the comparison reviews rated this computer lower, saying the Acer keyboard is too small, but I have not found this to be the case. I do not have small (female)hands, and I have not had a problem adjusting to the smaller board. I went to Best Buy to put my hands on the HP keyboard and while I was there I compared the feel with other netbooks there with smaller boards, and I didn’t see a big difference.
This computer is FAST and so light. I love it. When I first took it out of the box, I wasn’t sure how to tell if the Wi-fi switch was on or off–the switch doesn’t lock, and the signal at my house is very weak–but I figured it out when I got to the coffee shop where there is a good signal. I have not had any problems with this computer. I loaded Word on it a couple of days ago, and it is working great. The display is not as good as a full-size laptop. Sometimes it is a little dark, and this might bother someone who is looking for an excellent display–maybe someone who uses it for games or movies or something like that. Obviously, based on my previous statements about this computer, I don’t mind the occasional darkness. The display is great for my purposes–word processing, internet work, email.

Battery and fan issues make it a no-go
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The fan is LOUD! I checked online and everyone knows it, in fact they recommend free third party software that controls when the fan kicks in. Then later I saw that the battery was at 0%. It jumped from 100% to 93% to 3% to 0% to not present, then died. All this was with the power supply connected too. The only way around it is by going into safe mode but who wants that?
Once again I checked online only to find all the Eee PC users laughing at this model because of the terrible battery. Some folks even sent the batteries in for service or exchange.
I expect more out of a brand new machine. It went back.

Got it from Wal Mart for 298 $. This is a great netbook
pros
- After uninstalling Google Toolbar and McAfee and other useless software came with the netbook, it is really fast. 1 GB is enough, if you do that cleanup.
- Thinner than D150 model, very light weight.
- keyboard is small still usable
cons
- touchpad isn’t that good, gesture for scroll doesn’t work always.
- screen is glossy, but usable. I prefer glossy screen, some people won’t like it.
