Chicago Cutlery Cabrera 12Piece Knife Set with Block

January 4, 2010 by

The Carbera line from Chicago Cutlery features traditional three-rivet styling, yet the handles are made of white polymer for a clean, bright, contemporary look. Even the slots in the hardwood storage block are lined with the white polymer, while the top is surfaced with stainless steel. A chrome bar supports the block in front. Each knife features a forged, high-carbon stainless-steel blade that has been honed with the company's exclusive Taper Grind technology for optimum sharpness. The full-tang construction adds weight and strength for good balance and stability.

Along with the hardwood block, this 12-piece set includes the following 11 utensils: four steak knives; 3-1/2-inch paring knife; 5-inch utility knife; 5-inch partoku; 7-inch santoku; 8-inch serrated bread knife; kitchen shears; and 8-inch sharpening steel. A partoku, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a combination paring knife and santoku, the Asian-style, thin-slicing chef's knife that has become a staple of American kitchens in recent years. Chicago Cutlery recommends hand-washing its knives, and covers them with a limited lifetime warranty. With the utensils placed in the block, the set measures 13 by 4-1/2 by 12 inches. --Ann Bieri

      Poor Quality
      Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This set is nice to look at and the scissors are nice but the knife blades are very poor quality and do not hold an edge. I’m not sure how the tip got bent on one of the steak knives but normally a good knife blade will break under pressure before it bends. Perhaps the price now 01/01/10 is more suitable than when I bought them 2 years ago.

I read the reviews before I bought this set and even if there were a few discouraging ones I decided to purchase it. I did not regreat it. My only advice is that you be very careful because they are sharp! I am finding that out the hard way ;) Also, be sure you wash them right after use to prevent water and rust spots. Other than that, I am loving it and the look is very unique!

      A solid value
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this knife set to replace a low-end set and I’m extremely pleased with it. I chose it over comparatively priced sets and sets that cost $200 or more because it gave me what I wanted: a variety of quality stainless knives with composite handles that included a santoku and partoku and carried a lifetime warranty. I compared it to sets from Ginsu, Faberware and others, as well as other Chicago sets. The knives are all light weight and feel very sturdy, their blades are sharp from factory, and the extras are nice too. The stainless trimmed block is attractive, and the white handles are a nice touch, a departure from the black composite or dark wood you most commonly find. In stores, you won’t find a set of knives that can compete with the Cabrera at this price by a long shot.

The five prep knives (santoku, partoku, bread, utility, and paring) are forged, the four steak knives are stamped, and the shears – which separate for washing without tools, very important – are fabulous. You can not find a set better than this for under $200. While this is still around, get it. Gift it. No one will know you got it for under $45.

Steak knifes are a little flimsy (on the thin side) but very sharp. Definitely worth the price if your looking for white handled knife set!

My wife talked me into getting these knives since I do all the cooking in the family. She wanted them because they looked better on our counters than my old set but they are the best set I have ever bought. Sharp edges, wonderful weight, easy to clean, and they do look good on the counter.

      Good Solid Cutlery

When I use a knife I expect it to feel solid and cut well, this set does that.

In the final analysis, my wife likes it and that is about all that really mattered to me on this purchase!

      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
While they are not the sturdiest of knives, they are not going to cut through cinder blocks or the giant frozen squid you caught this winter, they are adequate for daily tasks. Its an attractive package and I have enjoyed using them. For the price they are not bad, I had a set for the same price from the local big box store that were completely useless after the first washing, these are by far better.

Complete Set, but knife handles lacking
      Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This block of knives is pretty complete. It has all the knives a typical kitchen would need. Notably, it has a 7″ santoku and kitchen shears (scissors). The block is also a nice touch. However, the knife handles are a little too short to be holding it comfortably. The material of the plastic white handles have a brushed finish, rather than a polished finish–raising concerns of whether they can stay clean and white over the long run. It was recently on sale for a very low price of $20, so any drawbacks are completely overshadowed by the price.

I bought this set for my sister-in-law for Christmas. I have a set that I love but no steak knives. My sister-in-law was so excited when she got it she used right away. This set is very very nice and the do last the test of time. I would recommend this product to anyone!

I am displeased with this purchase. The knives dull quickly and rust spots appear after the first use. Plus, steak knives don’t even have “teeth.” Sure, it is a decent price, but I would suggest spending more on a better set.

Extremely disappointing product. Minimal usage and rust spots appearing on blades after first cleaning in a dishwasher. Food is generally difficult to remove even when hand washing.

A very attractive set but difficulty to get really clean which makes you not want to use it. There is quite a bit of flex in the blades also.

      Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The main reason I picked this if for the combination. I like the santoku and partoku knives. Overall the white plastic is pretty cheap looking and is not finished well. You see flash all over the edges whch could have been easily trimed where ever this was manufactured. Besides the not so contemporary design, the knives are good.

Good knife set and the missing knife
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Got this set a few months ago at the Gold Box price. Not bad compared to what similar would cost at retail. Free shipping was good. Had noted a couple of reviews after I ordered the set spoke of a “missing knife.” When I got my set, I checked the contents and noted the bread knife was missing. I sent an email to the parent company of Chicago knife listed in the literature. Got a reply a couple of days later, sorry for the missing knife, they would send one. Actually got it about 8 weeks later. Better late than never. No charge. Complain, folks, complain!!!

We received this attractive knife set for a wedding gift only 6 months ago. We finally both agreed to give them to Goodwill and find another set. These knives seem so dull to me, despite all the high reviews. I am so not happy with this brand. I find myself grabbing my cheap ginsu knives that seem to have a sharp edge forever. I just don’t understand how this is possible? I feel bad that someone spent over $80 dollars on an item that is sub-par. They are really nice to look at but poor in functionality.

It looked like a good deal with a nice variety of utensils and an attractive set up. The first set that was delivered came without a bread knife so I grudgingly sent it back and asked for another set. When the return set was delivered it TOO was delivered without a bread knife so at that point I decided to cut my loses (pun intended) and get my money back. It was an attractive knife set and I really could have used it but I have better things to do with my time than to drive to the post office to return packages. I will try another company next time.

      Knife missing
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I received these knives from Amazon and the bread knife was missing. I sent the set back and Amazon sent me a replacement set and the bread knife was also missing. I contacted Amazon again and they told me to send both sets back and they would refund my money. Of course, that didn’t get me the knives I wanted. I saw the reviews on here and saw that a few people contacted Chicago Cutlery and they sent the missing knife to them. I contacted them and they emailed me back and said they were sending the replacement knife and I should get it in 2 to 3 weeks, which makes me very happy! Thanks to those on here who posted the information to help me out! Appreciate it!

This is the best set of knives we’ve owned. We have moved on from the wedding gift set to the Outlet store set and now these. Sharp and ready to go…

Also, when we got these in the mail from Amazon, the bread knife was missing. A quick email to Chicago Cutlery and they sent one out. No hassle at all.

      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my second set of Chicago Cutlery, as my previous (wood handled-) set of ten years of age has become well worn about the oak handles. The clean hard plastic handles of this set will probably last much longer. All the knives are extremely sharp in keeping with Chicago’s history. I have no doubt they are made in China (at this price), although I see no documentation as to origin. Only one large-sized knife has a serrated edge, which I tend to dislike as they are difficult to sharpen. The scissors, -easily taken apart for cleaning, are extremely well crafted.

Great set of knives. Nice variety and high quality for the price. I’ll dock it a star because I feel the scissors comes a part a little too easy if you are not being careful. But other than that the set is great and looks nice too.

A nice knife set for the price
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Let me preface this by saying that I am not an expert on knives and as such don’t know how this set would compare to a more expensive set.

What I can say is that my wife and I are enjoying using this set of knives. The sudoko configuration is very easy to use in chopping vegetables- very sharp and light. It made fast work of some carrots and celery. I have yet to use them on something tougher like bone. The scissors are also very easy to use- they came very sharp as well.

The set itself takes up very little space on the counter top and the knives look attractive.

I bought it for 40 bucks as a lightning deal and have no regrets.

      Good set for the money.
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just bought this yesterday. I love the look of this knife set. I got a fantastic deal at an outlet store. I would have liked the knife set in black or even red but it was only available in white. I bought it since it was a steal at $24.99 and Chicago cutlery has a great reputation yeah I know what a deal. It has a great pair of scissors that are well made and will be very useful with twine and cutting chives and scallions and a large sturdy knife sharpener that resembles a spit stick. It gives directions on the proper technique for using the sharpener so I am optimistic I will do this well. I love being able to put a nice edge on the knife.

The knives seem to be very light and my boyfriend commented “flimsy”, but I don’t think that is always an indication that the knives are of poor quality. The knife block is solid and sturdy, but I am not very fond of the aluminum piece that is placed over the top of the knife block as I feel this will require time to polish and keep it clean and shiney, it already shows some finger prints. Although the concept of aluminum or chrome on top helps to guide the knives into the slot and seems more compartmentalized, it will probably also get scratched alot and look ugly.

I used the paring knife to slice a tomato and it was nice and sharp. I see a few problems in the future with this set, 1) the white color handles will be hard to keep clean and I can see myself getting creative with keeping them clean, 2) the knives will also be hard to keep a nice shine on them since I saw watermarks on the knife after I cleaned it and had to buff it a bit before I returned it to the knife block 3) Since the metal is thin you must be gentle when sharpening or you could damage the blade.

Overall if you take good care of these knives and keep them clean and refrain from putting them in the dishwasher this could remain a great knife set for about 5 years.
