    Publications not always adequate
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I received my Kindle as a gift and like the device.

My first book purchase had poor formatting – spaces in the middle of words and lines endings in the middle of unhyphenated words. It was a small book to try out the Kindle. A quick read so the formatting was just an irritation. My second book, today’s 700+ pages, non fiction buy, at $9.95 does not have a table of contents. The kind of book one needs to be able to dip into and skim for items of interest. Is one supposed to print out a hard copy of the TOC to carry around with the Kindle in order to search on the title text? I can’t see myself investing any time to plow sequentially through this book. If there is no indication when buying a Kindle publication that it lacks such minimal characteristics of a book as a TOC or normal word formation, how is one to gain confidence in the medium?

not what I thought it was
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This Kindle was a xmas present for my husband, and even though it was expensive, as you can only get it from the States. We thought it was a better buy than the sony reader.

But were we mistaken, my husband reads on average 2 books a week, and this machine indeed caters to that need as it stores hundreds of books. Unfortunately the books are only available from the Amazon in the States and the books that he wants are restricted to the States, and cannot be purchased in UK. And when he found some books that he wanted, it turned out that they are dearer for the e book than you are for the paperback, but you dont own the book and are not able to lend the book and indeed I have heard that if the book is discontinued that it is deleted from your Amazon account that your downloads are kept on.The format of the books is such that you have to download from Amazon.

The machine itself is a perfectly good idea,it works like a book very efficient and it is a joy to use if you are prepared to fork out for the pricey books.

You cant read it in the bath or when you are taking off and landing on a plane as I found out when I tried.

All in all it is a splendid machine, he does not use it much as the books over in UK are so much cheaper, but if the restriction on the books from certain publishers is lifted and the price reflects the e book not the printed book, then this will be back into his hand quicker than the substance that falls of the digging implement.

    cheers

Wouldn’t change my Kindle for an iPad
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had a Kindle for many years. It is one of the most best and most innovative products I have purchased in the last couple of years. Last year I bought one for my daughter. This product is much better for those of us that enjoy reading. It is a breeze to download books both in the US and abroad. You can read as long as you like and your eyes don’t get tired. The battery is never an issue, since it last “forever”. I don’t even know how many hours it lasts for this is never an issue.

Being a Mac User who has a MacBook (actually the family has four of them), we have 2 Apple TV (one of the other best products I have ever owned) and 4 iTouch (an excellent device); I can say that although the iPad might be a good product it does not even come close to the Kindle. In the Kindle there are no monthly fees to receive wirelessly the books and it is much more eye friendly. The backlit screens do cause the eyes to get tired after some time.

I hope Kindle does improve, but keeps its ink technology.

    CONGRATULATIONS AMAZON!!

After u had received my Kindle, I was delighted, until I dropped it from my purse and the screen stopped working. I called Amazon telephone service and they sent me a new one! free of cost and shipping and also refunded me the cost of shipping the old one back to them. Truly they have a first class service and i am really willing to recommend the Kindle to everybody.

    Page numbers, please
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought the Kindle as an alternative to lugging at least 50 pounds of textbooks to class every day. I was even able to find several of the books I needed already in Kindle format. I just had one major problem, which I didn’t realize would be such a big deal. There are no page numbers. That’s fine for reading assignments, but as soon as my professors started referencing page numbers in class, I was lost. The same problem exists if I want to reference a particular section of the text, especially for citations.

I really liked the Kindle, and I think it would be perfect for recreational reading, but I had to return it. Amazon was very helpful and even refunded my shipping costs. If the issue with page numbers can be worked out, I really think this could be a valuable tool for college students, especially with the high prices of textbooks.

The Kindle2 is a fantastic peice of kit. I find it really easy to use and it fits my needs perfectly.

My only gripe is the prices of books. They could be a little bit cheaper. Buying paperbacks gives you the choice of picking up cheap deals on the latest releases. It would be great if the kindle versions which don’t even have to be printed could be offered with the same deals.

I know with all the iPad hype that the Kindle is taking it’s shots right now. I have to say as an Apple fan that I love my Kindle and the 6″ form factor is a wonderful size. I prefer the e-ink type screen to the back-lit screens as I do a lot of reading outside and this is where the Kindle wins hands down.

I’m unsure of the future of the DX version as it’s larger form-factor and cost places it in direct competition with the iPad, but the 6″ international version which I have is cost-effective (half the cost of an iPad) and is much more readable under direct sunlight (an assumption as I haven’t seen an iPad yet of course).

I may still get an iPad, but for reading I will generally stick with my Kindle.

Last week, I saw Steve Job presenting the new Ipad and a few weeks ago, I read about the great success of Amazon’s Kindle. As a consequence, I thought about the worst case scenario that this news might bring. Would printed books gradually and definitively disappear? Yes, I know, this question was asked many times before and books resisted. But just think about how easily digital music displaced CDs (which in turn had easily displaced vinyl records) from the market these past years. And Mr Jobs, who I deeply admire, had something to do with that, don’t you think? But, before I go on, I would like to clarify that I am not the kind of guys that are against technology. I have my Iphone, my Facebook, my Twitter and I am involved in a digital educational publication in my specialty that has a web-only format and a blog. I did not hesitate in discarding my printed version of medical literature that is available digitally and I almost never read anything related to my job from other source but the screen of my laptop. But this time, I felt a bit touched by the news. For a moment, just suppose that Steve Jobs visionary outlook is right and the iPad and Kindle win the battle over printed books making them disappear from our everyday world. Imagine a world where people use their own gadget where they keep their “books” that they purchased online and “share” their interests with an online community of millions of digital “friends” and Mr Jobs triumphally declares that reading is not a pleasure of lonely people anymore and now people from all over the world are now connected thanks his device. Yes, reading a book is a pleasure of lonely people and that’s why I am concerned about the possible victory of Mr Jobs. It is also a pleasure of relatively wealthy lonely people, and that makes me feel even more concerned because we are targets for these devices. But even though reading a book is something that you usually do on your own, the social implications that reading books are probably the reasons why books survived for such a long time. It is quite likely that digital books may indeed increase our network of people that share our interests. So, I don’t think that digital books will make us read less, but just the contrary. No doubt. However, I think that, contrarily to CDs or vinyl records, here the object, the book and its potential disappearance from the market is what worries me.

Many things may also disappear along with books. Bookshelves for example. They might be replaced by shiny new gadgets with LCD screens. Your bookshelf tells a lot of yourself. When I have the chance of getting into an interesting woman’s living room, I usually like to peep into her bookshelf with more interest than that I would have for her drawer where she keeps her lingerie. You may do it discreetly, and nobody would blame you if you pick “My Name is Red” from her bookshelf to take a look at it, but it would be an indiscretion to turn on her Kindle and watch what she has inside. It would be even more indiscreet to look inside her drawer to see her red underwear. Have you ever felt disappointed to go a woman’s apartment and see that she has no books? Or in the future, you may find her Kindle, but you would never know what’s inside. How would you pick Cortazar’s Hopscotch from her bookshelf only to whisper Chapter 7 in her ears, ideally under the candle lights? Yes, reading a book needs a special lighting, with the light, usually with some yellow tones, coming from behind. This is completely different with Kindle where the light comes from the screen itself and is usually pale white. Far less romantic than candlelights. And the smell of books is nice. It evokes time and, like Borges would say “everness”. It makes you take your time to read.

Bookstores may disappear. They are already disappearing from some cities. They might nevertheless survive and probably they will be even more romantic like those old vinyl records shops that you may find in places like Noting Hill, the NYC’s East Village, Buenos Aires’s San Telmo or the Paris’s Quatrier Latin. But they would be less easy to find and taking a woman to a bookstore will become a cliche. Try taking a potentially interesting woman in the early dating phase to a bookstore to see what books she takes. You may easily get rid of the ones that pick “The Da Vinci code” without spending too much time on a romantic dinner on them.

I am getting to my point. Books, the objects and situations that are related to them are key elements for romance. How many times you feel tempted of initiating a romance with a woman reading a book that you like on a train or in a café? Imagine that situation with a Kindle. How would you know what she is reading? Now I realize that books have always been my companion for dates. I am a very punctual guy, which is a quite uncommon for Latins. So, I have spent long moments waiting for a woman in a corner, in train stations, in cafes, with a book in my hands and a smile on my face. And the book you chose for these occasions is also important. I would not pick Kafka’s “The Castle” or Borges’s “Aleph” for example, but books with attractive titles like Ishiguro’s “Never let me go” or Philip Roth’s “Dying Animal” or some Kureishi’s short stories might help to break the ice. How would you imagine this with your Kindle?

But probably more importantly, these gadgets would make us more lonely and selfish. For example, books are heritable, able to be shared while your Kindle would become a useless device for someone else who survived you, after say 2 or 3 versions where you might not even be able to plug it. I inherited from my grandfather lots of books, including a very old version of Flaubert’s “Sentimental Education” which I read with a lot of respect coming from him, who married in his 80′s. I imagine my daughters discovering my books and seeing myself in many of them, long time after I am gone. That would not be likely with Kindle or iPad. If you take my iPod, you may discover a lot about me, my music, my pictures, my videos. I imagine it would be the same with Ipads or Kindle. But they are devices for single persons only. They become cold and useless gadgets if you synchronize them with someone else’s devices or if they get damaged.

So, even though you would tell me that these gadgets would open a whole world of interactions, connectivity and potentially romance by connecting with other people in the cyberspace, I think we, readers, will become more lonely, more individualistic and more materialistic with them.

He was always a bookworm, but due to health conditions his eyes are so bad he can’t read a regular book. Since you can increase the text size on this he is finally able to read again. He has actually 5 of the 16 books I put on it for him already. This is a great procuct.

Everything has been easy with the Kindle 2. Received it (in Australia) within 5 days of ordering it. Worked perfectly. Have subsequently been able to download free kindle app for my iphone (not available in Oz at time of purchse) and PC, and the auto syncing between the devices works perfectly. If anyone is considering buying an ebook, and has an iphone, i recommend you download the app on the iphone, and download a free sample chapter of a book, and see whether you like reading a book in this way. My son and i are happy to read books on the iphone – the advantage is that it is touch; the main drawback is that it is backlit, so hard on the eyes if you were planning to read for a long time. The kindle does not appear to be backlit and is very easy to read for long periods. Would like to get a cover for the kindle, but the postage from the US is too high (in some cases more than the item is worth), so hope they will soon be available in Australia.

Really cool gadget with a couple of flaws
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have to admit, I never really wanted a Kindle. I like to feel the paper and smell the ink of the real thing when I read. But, my husband is a technology wonk, and he got this for me for Christmas. I’ve come to appreciate several things about my Kindle: the ease and speed of buying books online and having them downloaded to my Kindle almost immediately, being able to store an unlimited number of books on a unit that’s small and light enough to fit in my purse (perfect for travel), and the added benefit of being able to review documents, highlight, and notate if I need to.

The two biggest problems I have with it are with the display. There is a definite glare issue if you’re reading under direct light – a problem you wouldn’t have with a real book. Second, if they put so much work into designing a reading light attachment, why not put the effort into making the screen backlit? There are times when I want to keep reading after my husband goes to sleep, but I don’t want there to be a reading light on to disturb him. It seems simple enough to me that they could do this – I’d be willing to pay some extra money for this feature. It boggles my mind that they didn’t think of that.

Overall, this was a great gift and I’m really glad my husband got it for me, because I probably wouldn’t have bought it for myself.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My wife had this on her xmas wish list. It’s very well built and delivery was early. It has always been in “range” for wireless downloading books and newspapers and that’s a neat feature. The battery seems to last forever. For those well researched this will be obvious, but If I was to perfect the next generation I would include touch screen navigation (the toggle switch is about a pleasing as the IBM’s attempt at replacing the mouse pad with that post thing in the middle of the laptop keyboard), I would appreciate back light feature, and I struggle with the menu for finding my way around a magazine or newspaper download version. For reading books it is excellent but next version or the competitions next version will do well to make navigation easier and menu’s more robust for newspaper. My wife gave it 5 stars but hey I bought it and it could be better- 4 stars for me.

This is my first experience with an eBook. It is not complicated has a lot of storage and is visually appealing and is VERY easy to carry around! I do not leave the house without my kindle it is the best thing I have ever bought and well well worth the expense! I have never had any problems with it. It offers a wide selection of books, the screen has no backlighting so there is no eye strain and you can read it on very sunny or cloudy days it is very easy to see. I also love the text to speech option. On nights when you really want to read your book but are too tired and just need to sleep I listen to the book for a while. I am a college student so I have my personal reading and many of my textbooks on it. You can buy books much cheaper then at a bookstore and you can take notes/bookmark pages/highlight which is great for a class or any book club!

This thing is awesome. Well worth the money. I absolutely love it.

Only thing I would change is the page forward buttons don’t seem to be in natural placement for my hands (maybe it’s my hands). I’d put a couple in different locations, perhaps a couple at the upper corners as it seems natural to place it on your chest when reading in bed and hold it by one of the corners.

Other than that I wish it was backlit but understand the trade off with battery life. Since the time between charges is one of the things I really like I’ll stick with that vs. backlighting.

Books should be cheaper though. It does bother me that I can find paperbacks in Costco for less than on Amazon…..

I`ve wanted a Kindle for over a year and I finally got one for Christmas. I didn’t even buy any accessories because I was sure I would be sending it back. I was certain the wireless feature wouldn’t work in my area (no cell phone service inside my house and my daughter’s wireless for her computer only if you’re hanging out the window on a sunny day). But Whispernet works. In fact, it down loads very quickly.

What’s good about Kindle? First let me tell you I read a lot,4+ hours a day at least 3 to 5 books a week (400 pgs ea). I love the classics being offered for free and I’ve downloaded quite a few. I started reading right off. No problems. The screen is fine I can switch from book to Kindle with no noticeable adjustment. No shadows in the middle, like a book has. As for the battery I got 2 weeks before it needed a charge

My complaints are minor. I highlighted and made notes to try out the feature but now I find I can’t get rid some of them. I wish there was a way I could sort my books I prefer them to be sorted by Author. However I did down load Kindle for PC onto my laptop and now have the list sorted by Author. When ordering on the Kindle the “search” and “back” is a pain I much rather the more detailed and easier to use website.

Accessories: I still have to order the cover which I will be doing soon. I don’t use a book light and haven’t seen the need for one. The lights I usually use for reading here are fine.

How long it takes to fix this problem and also to provide a broad range of literature including Australian and UK titles – recent not just classics WILL affect my opinion and recommendation of this item to others … disappointing at the moment.

Part of the allure of the Kindle was the opportunity to help the environment by easing the continued assault on our forests. Up until now I had been pretty content using the library. At $9.99 for most books this seemed a pretty affordable route. I heard the other day on NPR that Amazon had caved to McMillan and Apple and will be raising the rates per book to $12-15. To me Amazon has reneged on the original promotion. In addition, the huge production and distribution fees no longer exist. At $10 per book the opportunity to reach more customers, quicker and put out a good vibe to the environment was a good deal to the publishers. At $12-15 per book…. well, this is why capitalism sucks, it is inherently greedy.

I find that this reading device was a brillant invention. Not only does it have the ability to download all the books that I love to read, but the prices cause the device to pay for itself by the time I have paid for my 25th book (didn’t take too long either). If that wasn’t good enough I have found that there are also some great books that are free available for download. I just had a kid and sometimes it is a little hard to read a hardbound or paperback book with one hand while feeding the little one. The Kindle with it’s ease and comfort allow for the availablity to keep up on my reading and still enjoy being a father. Since purchasing the device several of my family members have found that they were impressed with the device and they bought Kindles as well. All of us are extremely pleased and delighted. Shame on you, Amazon! I bought a Kindle 1, just over a year ago and it stopped working. Amazon said I could pay $50 for a refurbished model. No special deal on buying the new, “substantially upgraded” one that Amazon is now touting. Sad to spend this kind of money ($350 for the original) and have Amazon NOT stand behind their products. Rude customer service manager spoke to me as if I should have expected the product to fail after one year. Gonna wait for the iPad. :-(

    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I am very concerned after reading that major publishers are pulling the plug on electronic book versions at amazon, and will no longer honor the $9.99 price for bestsellers. Apparently, the prices will increase to somewhere around $15.99 from what I have read. Thus, purchasing a book at that price dramatically reduces the savings (or may even result in paying more than you can purchase a current title at Costco and elsewhere) from hardcover prices. It would take a great many purchases at $15.99 to realize the payback on the inital cost of buying a new kindle (I have a secondhand one). Too, bad if you purchased without knowing of the book price increases.

I’m getting angry. I bought a Kindle on the premise that books will cost $10 or less, and now I find that books are costing $15 or more. I was just billed $19.22 for a book that I could have purchased used for $1.50 used. I can overlook the buggy software, slow response time, and gray screen. But I resent the pricing bait and switch. My advice? Either go in with your eyes open, or wait and see what an iPad can do.

I was very anti e-readers when they started becoming popular thinking the devices were going to take away from the pleasures of reading but have since changed my mind after buying and using the Kindle for about 3 weeks now. It amazes me how many books I can carry around to fit my reading moods and how easy and inexpensively I can add new books or publications to my device. I also bought one for my partner and since both units are on the same account we can both access the same books and they automatically show up on her Kindle in Archives that she can download at any time which is pretty cool. I recently saw the announcement of the iPad and would personally choose the Kindle over the iPad – the Kindle is an e-reader and doesn’t try to do 50 things ok – it does one thing really well. The e-ink technology is amazing and I quite frankly don’t need color on a book reading device – the battery life is amazing. I also bought the Amazon leather cover for it which fits it perfectly and make it feel even more like a book. Think of all the resources that are saved by not printing books and look how many books are thrown out when not sold – e-books are on demand only. I love my Kindle and wouldn’t give it up now :)

    An Avid Book Lover Converted
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just received my brand new Amazon Kindle and I have to admit I had my reservations. I am an avid and voracious reader. My intrigue with books extended beyond their content, however. I loved the feel of a book in my hands, the smell of ink and paper, the sound of a hastily turned page. This was a part of the appeal. I was concerned that using E-books would detract from the overall experience.

I had used Kindle for PC for sometime before deciding to order an actual Kindle and I waffled back and forth. The PC version, while nice, lacked the proper environment. I used it primarily on my laptop and found it confining. Page turns were abrupt, forcing my eyes to refocus every time. At all times I was fully aware that I was reading things off my laptop. This being my experience with Kindle to date I was greatly concerned how my Kindle would affect change.

Now it is here and after an hour spent with it, my fears have been relieved, completely. I actually had to tear myself away from it long enough to write this review while the reaction is still fresh in my mind. The size and weight are literally perfect. I know long hours were spent in Amazon’s offices to achieve this, but it still must be said. I had been concerned that the six inch screen would seem small and in comparison to some of the books in my collection, it does. But not to the point that it detracts from anything. It is no worse then reading a Mass Market printing of a book.

The E-Ink technology is both breathtaking and wonderful! At no point am I reminded that I’m reading digital words. The words on the page look like just that, words on a page. Many reviews speak poorly of the black on silver/grey motif of the Kindle two so naturally I was concerned. It is not a problem at all. I actually held up a hard copy book next to it (same title, same place in the text) and compared and was pleased. The E-Ink is very natural and realistic. Think of it as books in Hi-Def. Impressive. As to those concerned that there is no back light. Well, there isn’t a back light on a bound book either. No difference in my mind.

The Kindle is very easy to use. I admit I skipped the instruction entirely and figured it out by myself without issue. Of course now I’ve gone back and discovered its many many features and am so very pleased. I especially love the dictionary feature! Fantastic!

When they say the Kindle is designed to make you forget the Kindle, they are being honest to the n’th degree. Within the first few pages I had forgotten that it wasn’t a book and was engrossed in the text. When you turn the page there is a brief flash before the new words appear. This is the E-Ink adjusting itself and at first I found this mildly distracting. A half hour later, it was of no matter. My mind seemed to associate this with the brief moment you stare at the edge of a page as you flip it past while reading a bound book. I don’t notice it anymore and I’ve only owned it for an hour.

The button placement is ideal in general. Everyone will have slightly different preferences as to where they think the buttons should be, but I find they are in a convenient place. I especially love that Next Page is on both sides of the Kindle. So I can hold it with either hand and turn the page with a press of my thumb. It seems like that would be a small thing, but after using the PC version with it’s rather fixed layout, dependent on my laptop, the Next Page buttons on either side of the Kindle were a great convenience.

Overall I am thrilled beyond belief with my investment. If there were one thing I could change it might be the placement of the power cord. When you first receive it your instructions are to plug it in and charge it (understandably). Of course I was eager to use it immediately so I played with in on its charger. The USB port is on the bottom edge of the Kindle and it made holding it just slightly awkward until which point I was able to unplug it. This may or may not continue to be an issue depending on when I charge it. But knowing full well I typically forget to plug things in until the point that they die in my hands, I’m sure I’ll spend at least some of my reading time tethered to the wall with a cord awkwardly strung out from the bottom. I know the sides would have been inconvenient depending on the hand a particular buyer wished to hold it with. (A cord dangling out the left side would be rather annoying to those who favor their left hand) Perhaps the top would have been a more convenient placement. Altogether this is a minor complaint and not something that knocks my star-rating below a five. I’d still give a six were I allowed.

I’m really enjoying my new Kindle. I like the ease, the size, the portability, etc. I find it frustrating when I’m looking in the online store though, and have accidentally purchased books three times now because of the delay on the system. Trying to get out of the store, clicked the “Buy Now” button. How crazy is that! They charge me for the book and then credit it back when I click “Purchased Accidentally,” so it’s a transaction on my Visa card, and to make matters worse, I always get less back than what I paid. They have different amounts for the Canadian dollar values, even though it happened seconds apart. This has happened every time. Very strange!!

Nothing, to me, compared to the one and only Kindle. Once I received it, promptly I may add, it was incredibly simple to use. Readability is excellent, navigationally unbelievably easy. Reading samples of books, searching and purchasing books could not be easier and faster. One of the features I know I cannot live without, now that I have it, is looking up words as I’m reading. I LOVE MY KINDLE!!! Thank you for this wonderful new technology.

    My little review
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
    Hi,

I’m French so I’m not very good at English, so sorry for the mistakes ^^

I wanted a Kindle for Christmas this year, so my father ordered one on December 13th, and we received it Wednesday 16th, so we were amazed by the time it took, that’s a very good point.

The second time I had to charge it was like two weeks ago (since the first time i got it) so that”s another good point.

What I found great was the fact that it works perfectly on Linux and that’s very important for me.

The fact that we don’t have to buy all our books on the Kindle Store is another cool thing, because I have some PDF and stuff on my computer, and I don’t have to buy them, just to drag’n drop them on my kindle.

The only fact that was missing for me is that we can’t choose our scrennsavers, I mean the ones that came with the kindle are cool, but I wanted some personal ones, so I “hacked” my kindle (It was very simple and it’s kind of an upgrade, so maybe you can put it in the next firmware).

The price was fine for me, but I know some people who can’t afford it so it’s not a priority but maybe do something about it like few months before a new version.

The only thing I want would be the full internet on the Kindle. I find that it’s really great to have free 3G on the kindle. I know that it will cost you a lot but I’m thinking about something : Here in France we have full acces to wikipedia in English, that’s okay for me,but it will certainly be very interesting to allow wikipedia in the language of the country (if it’s possible, I don’t konw) and maybe one news webpage, like the BBC or CNN maybe (in english this time).

I’m thinking of buying the Kindle DX for my birthday in July, and I’ve heard that it will become international before this day so that’s cool.

Thank you for all your work about the kindle, that’s really one of the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.

    Pyliip

I was given the Kindle 2 by my partner for Xmas. We live partly in South-West France and partly in the UK. I was thrilled, particularly being able to wake up in the morning and read the newspaper! Then it died. A first class after-sales service has ensured an immediate replacement. We have both read novels on it, and find that it extremely easy to read, I have the smallest print size and she has the next size up, so having the position marked rather than the page is a real bonus. The only criticism, and it is an important one, is that there is no way of attaching a wrist strap. This would add 2 benefits:-

Security – if one were reading it on the underground (subway to our American friends) the chance of an opportunistic kindle-snatch would be reduced. (Although to be fair, the use of an e-reader to a non-reader is questionable.)

Secondly, and more importantly to us is the chance of dropping it when dozing off. All it needs is a little bar like they have in small digital cameras and cellphones. You have let Steve Jobs in at the side door with this failure, however small it may seem.

Benefits – easy & fast to navigate, easy & light to carry with you (I have the 6″ smaller size version), fast to download, great range of books & newspapers/magazines to try out or subscribe to. I love the Sample feature that enables you to read a sample of a book’s chapter before buying; or a two week trial before subscribing to a periodical. The screen is easy to read. It has a four day battery life that is helpful on long trips. It’s better than Nook that’s slow & difficult to navigate. Main drawback – black & white screen. This is where the Ipad may draw away customers unless Amazon does something about this. There’s got to be a happy medium between color screen and still pretty good battery life. I have two friends who have been trying to get me to get a Kindle for the last two years. I am an avid reader and always thought I loved holding a book and turning the pages. But I also do a lot of overseas traveling and carrying books on planes, trains and buses was starting to be a problem. Now I just take my little Kindle along. It doesn’t take up a lot of room on my carry-on or even in my purse. I can also make the size font comfortable for my ageing eyes. And surprise! First experiences with Kindle
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I played around with the Kindle – an XMas present for my daughter – before Christmas Eve. Here are my impressions. In short: I liked it a lot, but there`s lots of room for improvement.

    PLUS:

    1. Quality of the electronic ink display – it is really most convenient to read.

    2. Speed and convenience of shopping. You want a book, you find it, you have it – all in all under 3 minutes.

    3. Text to speech: Where enabled (not all books allow it, unfortunately), it works better than expected (far from perfect, though…).

    4. Integrated English dictionary: Pointing at a word (with the cursor, not with the finger) immediately displays the corresponding dictionary entry – great for non native English readers like myself.

    MINUS:

    1. Text justification cannot be turned off. We know, however, that justified text may be harder to read than left-aligned text.

    2. Font size for the interface (menus etc.) cannot be adjusted. Thus, although text reading is probably easier for visually impaired persons than with printed books due to the text scaling options, the product as a whole lacks accessibility.

    3. The display is very slow when turning pages, which fatigues your eyes (I found myself looking away when hitting the next page button).

    4. The Kindle`s back is a bit too slick to offer a firm grip in all situations.

    5. Documents uploaded from your computer via USB are not visible in the menu (at least I didn`t manage to make them show up) – you need to perform a search on some text portion to access such a document.

    6. No multi-language support. Text to speech, the user interface, the Kindle store are available in English only. The most annoying problem is that when searching text, it is impossible to enter umlauts.

I am what I would call a compulsive reader. As long as I have something to read, nothing else really seems to matter.

I would be lost without my Kindle. This is the best gift I have ever gotten, even if I had to give it to myself. It also gets around the problem of buying books in a language other than the one normally spoken where I live. Actually, after having my Kindle for less than 3 months, I am wondering how I used to manage without it.

Since I tend to lose track of time when I am reading, one suggestion I would make is to include a clock. The other suggestion, since I live at the beach, would be to make available some sort of clear, breathatble covering which could be put over the Kindle to take it to the beach. I am currently afraid of doing that since sand might get into it. The other suggestion would be to make available contemporary books in french rather than mostly the french classics that are currently available in Kindle books.

Apart from those 3 suggestions I think that Kindle is perfect and will be my gift of choice to every reader I know. Then after that I will give them Amazon gift cards so that they can buy the books they want to read. That is so much better than my trying to guess what they would like to read and try to determine if they already have the book.

fair prices for digital media, sharing and glare
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Lately,I have discovered that digital books that I was interested in purchasing on my Kindle costs as much or more than as the same hard backed books that could be purchased in used (excellent) condition from Amazon third party sellers. Digital books by definition do not involve the same production costs and prices should reflect that difference.

Previously to my purchase of Kindle, I have shared hardback books with friends. Unfortunately, I can not share digital books. It would be fair if the digital books were allowed a reasonable amount of duplication that would permit sharing of books. Arguably, when I purchase a book, the copy is mine to share with whom I like and Kindle infringes on that right of ownership.

On the Kindle itself. I read at night using a book light so as to not disturb my sleeping wife. I have found that the surface of the Kindle screen produces glare and reflection which interferes with the reading experience.

If you buy it, its all under your name. So if you’re going to buy it as a gift for someone else, its a little tricky. Regardless, it works great! She’s already downloaded a few books, and almost done reading them. The adjustment of font sizes really helps in various environments. Her favorite is to go to Starbuck’s and sit and read it. Not ready for the iPad yet. Still lots of money for that. For reading books and documents, this thing is plenty good and cool.

As it is, I spend too much time on my PC and reading a simple paper book took me back to basics. In addition, I had tried downloading books and reading on my laptop was inconvenient.

The Kindle was a Christmas present from my son and I cannot stop thanking him, “the best present I could have ever got”.

First of all, it feels like a real book. There’s none of that computer light or electronic feel. Kindle is just page after page of a book. The feeling is so real sometimes I forget and attempt to turn the pages as with a paper book.

The best part is that I have an entire bookstore available to me any time any place. I do not have to go to the bookstore or wait for delivery, if I want to read it I just choose, download and a few seconds later I’m reading.

The Kindle is lightweight and slim. It works everywhere; the battery lasts a long time. It has a built in dictionary, I can even highlight, bookmark a page, or even research while I’m reading.

There are no extra expenses involved in owning the Kindle actually, book prices are cheaper than the bookstore, and there are some great deals. The only other money I spent was on some accessories: a Kindle leather cover and a nightlight that I can use for reading some of my old books.

The only thing I wish I had is a see through cover that would protect my Kindle in the summer months while reading at the beach- I haven’t seen any available in Amazon.

User friendly Kindle is an exceptional experience
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
What a pleasure, from the day I placed my order and received the Kindle three days later, during the busy Christmas season. Hand delivered at the door of our holiday house (for which I have provided the wrong address and still I was traced down with a friendly phone call and correct delivery!).

And what an experience to receive an entire book downloaded within seconds on my Kindle, ready to read.

The light weight of the Kindle makes it easy to take many books on business trips and holiday without adding to your baggage weight and that is to me a true convenience. And so comfortable to handle, no more thick, difficult to handle books in bed or on flights.

Another wonderful convenience is to be able to buy a book anywhere, anytime at a much lower price than an actual book.

Having said all this I still like to buy books and will continue to do so. I see the Kindle as an added product, not entirely replacing books. I love my book case full of books. I like to hold a book and some books are just not available on Kindle.

I will highly recommend the Kindle to everyone.

Although all books are not available on Kindle (for example I looked for The Fifth Discipline by Senge) I realise the database of books and magazines are expanded everyday. Even Economist is now available on Kindle. Great!

I got this for Christmas from my husband and I just love it. Recently he had surgery so I took my Kindle along – people were amazed at it. It is so much like reading a paper book that I have to stop myself from trying to turn the pages. It would be nice to be able to share your library with other Kindle users – other than that, it is perfect.

As an academic librarian I was pretty sceptical about e book readers after testing a few. I receved the Kindle as a fab surprise Christmas pressie from someone who thinks I’m a bit of a geek and have been pleasantly surprised.

I find it very comfortable to use and don’t think it takes away much from the physical sensation on holding a paperback.

I did buy a sleeve cover for it as was worried about dropping it.

I’m now trying to decide which books to buy for my next holiday – and loving the fact that I can choose and download whilst away without any hassle.

Let’s get one thing straight. Amazon Kindle is one of a kind. The Global Wireless Latest Kindle Generation comes with a pack of exciting features such as improved navigation, an anti-glare screen, a user-friendly approach to the user interface, a very well designed keyboard structure, a great service provision of the Amazon Kindle Bookstore through a dedicated network ‘wishpernet’ and above all an enhanced e-book reaading experience.

I would recommend it to any book lover who would wish to carry less in weight but more in quantity. All this at an affordable price. Thank you Amazon Kindle!

I can’t bear to part with the books I have read, because you never know when the mood hits you to re-read them. The Kindle has a big memory and I just love it. Also you can get some of the classics for FREE! You can’t beat that. It has this text to speech that is awesome when working out, or cleaning the house. I can get through my book and still get stuff done around the house. It’s great!

I’ve always loved reading but couldn’t afford to pay for new books, so I generally waited until I could borrow them from a friend or from the local library. This meant that I haven’t done much reading lately. When I was given my Kindle for my 50th birthday, I was so excited. I was really impressed when the Kindle arrived only 6 days after ordering it as I live in South Africa. I couldn’t wait to open it and in my excited state, I failed to notice the strip on the side of the box which helps you open it. I was stumped, so I found a kitchen knife and cut the sides of the box. Unfortunately the blade nicked the screen and casing. Luckily, it hasn’t damaged it badly, but I can kick myself for not seeing that strip!

The Kindle is really easy to use and gentle on the eyes. I also still can’t believe how quickly a book is downloaded – magic!

Being from South Africa, some of the accessories and book titles aren’t available to me, but I still have so many to choose from. The only problem I now have, is to be disciplined and to put a monthly budget on how much I can spend. Being able to sample a book first is also useful as I sometimes forget a book title but remember the story.

The other thing I failed to do was to order a cover at the same time – that was just silly of me. Luckily, one of my friends also decided to order a Kindle and bought an extra cover for me. Perhaps Amazon should offer a special “Kindle with Cover” for an extra $20.00?

I’ve been wanting one of these for over a year now. Finally bought one and it’s the best investment I’ve made. It’s easy to use, simple to find books. I love it. I do wish I had known it didn’t light up for reading in bed at night, but it makes sense i.e. no eye strain. My wife will now be buying one for herself. No more library, overdue charges, and the books are cheap if not free. One thing I need to compliment Amazon on, if they know I book is free on-line they tell you even if they are selling the same book. Very cool way to keep me as a customer.

The wireless downloads work like a dream. Best of all, when I travel, I do not have to take a swag of reading matter to keep me going – just by downloading a few novels into my kindle I am carrying the equivalent of three or four kilos of hand luggage without the weight. I love the Kindle! It is so easy to take with me to appointments, or in the car. I don’t need 2 hands to hold the book or turn the pages. I can scan over a page that has lots of description that I don’t really need to read, just get a sense of it, so I am reading faster.

I like being able to use my computer and put books into my wish list. Because we live in an area that doesn’t have good reception, I drive about 4 miles to a great tower where I get full bars and download 10 to 20 books at a time.

    I highly recommend the Kindle!!

I’m completely hooked on my Kindle, and I’ve downloaded tons of books, but that doesn’t automatically mean I have time to read them all. It’s hard to say whether it’s worth the money, but I’m enjoying it very much. Reading hometown news here in Japan is especially entertaining.

On the practical side, all the reviews and ads are right, the machine is a nice weight and it fits in my coat pocket. It’s also very readable, much better than a computer or cellphone screen. I’ve dropped it on the bus three times, and it shows no ill effects. It’s a bit of a hassle explaining what it is to everyone who asks, but I assume that will wear off.

Twice I had a technical problem (apparently unrelated to the drops) where it froze on a given screen. I called Amazon and they explained how to reboot it, and that solved the problem. Two things concern me about that solution: (1) I had to make an international call at my expense because the website’s so-called ‘call me’ feature didn’t work, and (2) the solution amounted to the equivalent of giving it a good kick rather than addressing what may have caused the problem in the first place.

It’s a machine, and things happen to machines. In that sense, books are infinitely preferable. Still, I’m getting ready to go on a trip, and it’s nice to have a lot of reading material without carrying the weight.

I reluctantly bought my Kindle hoping I would like it as much as I like to read “regular” books. Turns out….I LOVE my Kindle!! It is so much easier and more comfortable to hold than a book, especially when reading in bed. The white frame seems to disappear after you start to read and all you see are the words on the screen. The downloads via whispernet are awesome and easy…no more waiting for a new book until you can drive to the bookstore.

I purchased a neoprene case, a clear silicon skin, and a screen protector to go with it. I love the feel of the skin; it makes it easier to grip and hold on to. Because it is light but sturdy, I find myself carrying this thing everywhere.

At first I was like “OMG, I just spent alot of money, I better use it”. My sisters picked on me and said that the only reason I bought it was becasue it looked cool. Yes they are right about that, but I now use it every day!!! I cannot imagine it not being a part of my day. I read more now then I ever have and get excited too. The kindle is so easy to carry around and fits right is a purse. When you own the kindle it is fun to read and so easy to use. The pages turn quickly and the text is adjustable so it can work for people that have poor eyesight. There are all sorts of hidden features that are really AWESOME. If one wants to continue with a book, but there eyes are tired then just turn on the text to speech mode and it reads to you. OVERALL, A AWESOME READER. SCHOOLS SHOULD USE THEM FOR TEXT BOOKS….IT WOULD SAVE MANY TREES. I am 35 and treat it better then myself

Overall I am happy with the kindle. However a couple of items could be improved as far as the marketing is concerned. The lack of a direct-to-power charger for non-US purchasers is ridiculous. I soon realised that I needed one and purchased it through Amazon – thus entailing another delivery fee. Why not package these things up with non-US Kindles and simply increase the price a little to cover costs? Alternatively, why not ship the US power cord so that poeple can simply purchase an adaptor suitable for use in their home country.

I’m also a bit disappointed with the number of books not available in Australia.

The “search” procedure seems inadequate. Why can’t I type in an author’s name and get a listing of his/her Kindle books. I tried this with one author and got no response – but subsequently found a book of his in a general (and lengthy) search.

In spite of the above I have found Kindle to be very kind on my arthritic hands (not having to hold a heavy paperback open is great, I like the ability to resize text, bookmarking, notation etc.

I’ve had my Kindle2 two months and just love it. I thought the transition from a “book” to the Kindle would be difficult but after using it for a while I’m wondering why I waited so long. It’s easy to read and for me the best part is being able to get the book I want in 60 seconds…no more trips to the bookstore to find they are sold out or what I want is still in hardback (I refuse to pay hardback prices). If I finish a book at 9 p.m. I can start another at 9:05 with the click of a few buttons. Book prices are reasonable and while I can’t share them with friends when finished maybe that will encourage them to get a Kindle also. I think the keyboard at the bottom is a waste as I use it to read fiction…I don’t think I could use it to read text books…so I’m not making notes as I go. I would like to see a “go to” feature if I want to back up or move ahead to a specific page. It’s light weight and easy to hold. Overall I am quite happy with it.

A disappointment has been to see that they don’t have as many academic book in the kindle format yet and, besides, pdfs are not as good to read on the screen of the kindle as i thought they might be. Fantastic device, true replacement for the trusty book!

Great device, a true replacement for the age-old book, recommend without question. If you travel quite a bit the 6″ is a godsend, rather than carting about a whole pile of books in your bags, one device does it all.

Yes you could get other types of units (both released and not quite yet released) with much more functionality, however this device does one thing very well, been an e-book reader.

Some features that would be great in future, if they can be implemented without impact to battery life and form factor

    Touch screen for changing pages

Some kind of “side light” for low light conditions (yes understand this impacts battery life)

Ability to zoom into PDF files, this omission makes PDFs impossible to read on the 6″

More periodical support for Australian newspapers and the like

Smaller keyboard on the 6″ unit & larger screen

Directional buttons rather than the hard to use joystick (or perhaps a combination)

Ability for airlines to understand that this device couldn’t possibly cause the plane to crash during take-off or landing (annoying to not be able to read my book for at least and hour of every flight)

Thank you Amazon for making this device available to the market & dragging publishing into the future.

    Kindle Text to Speech
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When I first saw the Amazon Kindle 2 I was attracted by its ability of text to speech. I am always keen to read and learn more about all aspects of filmmaking, but time is so pressing I never seem to read as much as I would like. I heard good and bad reports of the feature, but I thought if it worked it could be the answer for me. I considered buying it directly from the US, but bided my time and got the UK released version recently. So, I bought my first book, “Alternative Scriptwriting: Successfully Breaking the Rules”, plugged in my earphones and tested the text to speech. I’m pleased to say it has been fantastic. The voice is not perfect, it is a cross between a person and traditional computer voice, but it is certainly good enough to listen comfortably and hear exactly what is said. I have yet to try changing the tempo, but the standard seems good for me. Subsequently, I have read (heard!) more of Alternative Scriptwriting in the last few days than I read in my hard copy in the previous 18 months. Set-up of the device was straightforward, as was purchasing the book. I am delighted and would highly recommend the Kindle. To provide greater flexibility I have just ordered some wireless earphones, so I can set the Kindle down and listen unattached, meaning it should become even more useful. With the Kindle I will now be able to digest lots more books on filmmaking and as such it will help me make better films, starting with my second feature, Silent Terror.

They sent me a new one overnight and i had it by noon the next day. Plus a free shipping label to return the old one. It was just some aberration as this one works great and is so easy to use. The only drawback is that you have to remember when you click to purchase a book, that you DO have to pay for it!!! I wish it was available when I was in school.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Since purchasing my Kindle, I’ve read a number of books that I’ve really enjoyed. Navigating on the Kindle is easy, fast, and effortless. The selection of books to download is excellent and the downloading process is so quick that by the time you change screens, your book is available to you. I like the fact that you can download a sample of the book to determine whether you really want to read the book or not.

My only complaint is that you cannot adjust the contrast of the screen. I think that would be very helpful to make the print stand out more. Otherwise I’ve been extremely satisfied with my Kindle.

I have now had my Kindle for almost 4 weeks and am thrilled with it. I ordered it on a Wednesday and it arrived in Australia the next Monday. It is easy to use and download material. I particularly like the way I can change the font – especially when reading in bed – so that I don’t need to wear my glasses! I also purchased the leather cover which makes it look very swish and I tend to carry it with me in my handbag and read a few pages while I’m waiting at various places. Since my purchase I have also bought the power charger which I will need when travelling overseas. Whilst some books are not available in Australia because of copywrite issues I have had no trouble finding enough books to download. I also use the sample feature to see if I want to read the book. And I am still supporting my local bookshop and buying “real” books!

Unable to listen music and read the book in one time 6.No card reader port – 2 gigs are good for book only but not for mp3 or audiobooks.

Very bad: The KIndle does not supported for most of formats.

Very-very bad: does not support for different languages ( in PDF only ! ). I’m tried to read for example russian books and cannot because the system supported for english only! lso, Users are unable to increase the text format in PDF .

The Kindle need ASAP for all user; provide some software to create a PDF files ( pdf 6) with change font size.

    Subscriptions when traveling abroad
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
When traveling abroad, Amazon sends a reduced content version of subscriptions (Economist) via whispernet charging $1.99 per download or $4.99/week forall subscriptions. This version excludes the cover, pictures and graphs.

It is inadmissible that they pretend to charge more for less. If my subscription is in the US, why should I get the international version (as they like to call it)? It is really the rip-off version. I would accept to receive the reduced version if it were free to download anywhere.

The file size they send is 260 Kb instead of the usual 3.4Mb file, so they are saving on the cost of data sent but pretend for us to pay an extra $1.99 per download or the extra weekly rate.

Even if you download via USB when abroad you get this reduced version.

The worst is that Amazon is so obscure with this issue and Customer Service is useless and pretend we are retarded or don’t understand what they are doing. I have contacted them 4 times with no logical response.

    Kindle 2 Still King!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Purchased the Kindle in early January 2010 and I am extremely pleased with it’s performance and features. This is a wonderful product that is easy to use and quite portable along with a wide selection of books and other content.

Yes, the iPad will be available in the next two months but I much prefer taking the Kindle at it’s price point of $260 on the subway versus $500-$900 device that may become a target to theft or accidental damage. The Kindle does the one thing well that I need it to do and that’s allow me to read books easily. Great size footprint and the e-ink is better on the eyes than an LCD screen and the battery life is exceptional!

My only regret is that with the introduction of the iPad it appears that book publishers are trying to gouge the reading public. Thanks Apple!

    I love my Kindle!

These e-reader is meant to be used to read books and maybe some newspapers only and that is what I use it for. So far so good, it works very well in that sense. But it has no back light so you will not be able to use it where the illumination is poor. Another drawback is the page numbering which is awkward to say the less, as it follows no sequence and it is confusing (maybe I need some more practicing).

I absolutely love my Kindle! I have read more books in the past two months than I have in years. I used to be an avid reader, but as time went by found less and less free time to read. The Kindle has helped me re-discover my love of reading.

With the text-to-speech feature I can do other things while listening to books. It is small enough to fit in my purse so I can take it anywhere; and so lightweight I can hold it for hours without tiring (and if I doze off I don’t lose my place!). The display is amazing, and easy on the eyes; and being able to chose different text sizes is great. I love the dictionary feature – just put your cursor on the word you want to look up, and the definition appears at the bottom of the screen. The battery lasts a long time, too.

I can conveniently download books at any time using Whispernet, and being able to sample a book before buying (usually about a chapter, sometimes more) is a great feature. There are a lot of inexpensive and free books available for the Kindle, and it reads .pdf files (they look better if you forward them to Amazon for conversion – it’s free if you have Amazon e-mail the converted files to you) so you can put your own files on it.

The drawbacks are few. It would be nifty if there was a built-in way to illuminate the screen for night reading (not a backlight, I know that wouldn’t work for these), though my clip-on booklight works fine. I wish all Kindle books allowed text-to-speech, but some publisher’s won’t allow it (no TTS is a deal-breaker for me). I hear that a folders option will be available with the next software upgrade, which will be a feature I will really appreciate.

Conclusion – the best thing since sliced bread (yep, you can download cookbooks to it too!). I take it everywhere, and read every day. LOVE IT.

Never Thought I Would Do This

As someone who has ventured to his library at least once every two weeks to pick up a couple of fictions, I thought my retirement was set. I love to read and do so each morning with a steaming cup of coffee as my companion. I feel embarrassed that I do not get going in my retirement until 11, but mornings are my favorite reading time. My wife surprised me with the Kindle for Christmas. Initially, I thought this is ridiculous, I’ll never use it. But I opened it up and downloaded a few free books and off I went. Now I love it. Just visited Mexico and the Kindle took the place of the few books I would normally take. It’s fun and easy to operate. Read it on the plane and, again in the mornings before our days got going. The dictionary especially is cool–those words I’m never sure of can be defined with a push and pull of a button. I downloaded the Sunday Washington Post for $.75. I used to pay $5 at the nearby SC Publix. It was great–and no more ads. I attended a local school board meeting and heard a high school Chemistry teacher report on his class’ experiment for the reader. Now I know of what he was reporting. With the note taking function and the highlighting, it is fantastic. This is a must to make education more affordable and BETTER! Thanks Amazon for setting the standard in this new way of life. Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have been considering purchasing a Kindle for my boyfriend as a gift. The only thing that is preventing it is the costs of buying books. He thinks the $9.99 price is too high unless it’s just been published and here you are letting publishers INCREASE prices. This is the exact reason people download music illegally! How about giving customers what they want for a change? What a concept!

The Kindle is great for the environment and encourages people to read, but people like me are just going to stick to paperbacks because we’ll get hosed on the prices of books.

And another…the price of the Kindle itself better come down SOON to compete with Ipad!!!!

I replied to the email only to find that Amazon does not respond to an email. They give you a list of probable answers. There is no “one size fits all.” So, I have no answer and I have a Kindle and I cannot buy more books until I add money to a pot that has plenty of money in it. If you are going to buy, keep in mind that you are at the mercy of Amazon if you want something to read. This is an example of how to destroy an excellent customer relationship.

I’ve now had my Kindle about a month, have read my first book on it, and I must say using it was better than I had anticipated. I had concerns about reading a book on a screen (contrast, ability to page up and down, amount of printing displayed, etc.) and yet, this little gem has proven itself up to the task.

Negatives, well, I’d place the controls higher on the sides so that you can hold the Kindle without accidentally touching the controls, but once you get used to it, it doesn’t happen often. Also, I like owning books. But, that aside, I’ll use this for books I want to read but not have on my shelf.

Overall, 5 stars. Maybe 5 1/2? Would I recommend a Kindle to others? You bet!

    1- not enough academic books

2- not enough reduction prices on academic ebooks. Paperbook

3- pdf. files are not easy to read for a long period. U must change that when you create your kindle app store.

4- provide more opportunity to read different types of format

5- ABOVE ALL, THE CLICKS AND LIGHTS WHEN YOU CHANGE PAGE PROVOKE HEADACHE IF I READ FOR MORE THAN 1H30 MN.

Apart from that, it is practical.

I think it’s a good start for an e-reader, and will have a look at the iPad and Microsoft/HP offerings to see if they fare better. Plus marks are it’s size and battery life. Negatives are it’s lack of free wireless support in Europe, allowing access to only Wikipedia. Otherwise I think it’s a great concept. We are military overseas and the new international downloads make our lives so much easier. I love the fact most of the books are cheaper on the Kindle then if I bought the printed book. As they should be for the fact they don’t have the cost of printing a book. (Sadly some publishers are looking out for themselves and not the authors think they should get the same price as a printed book.) I have already started to replace my books that I read most often and plan to buy all my new books on Kindle. I also love the fact I can carry so many books with me everywhere I go. No worries that I don’t have room for the 1000 page book I was reading.

I ordered the Kindle and was eagerly awaiting for its arrival.

I had it sent to my place of work and every day I looked forward to seeing an Amazon package. Alas it wasn’t to be.

After 10 days of waiting, I received an email from Amazon stating that because they couldn’t locate my address after three attempts the order was going to be returned and I would be re-funded.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! The couldn’t locate me on 3 occasions – a place of work that receives and send out dozens of parcels via courier every day!!!

And Amazon’s courier company could not find me!!!

What about telephoning me??? I could have given them directions – common sense, you’d think.

And what is more irritating is that while I’m emailing Amazon all this, my Kindle is still in Australia ready to be sent back and there was nothing I could do about it – I had to start off from scratch and re-order it.

So my review is: if you’re ordering it from overseas (aka: not America) be warned that even though we have maps, GPS systems, Navmans etc., they still might not find you.

So I bought another eReader and am more than happy with it – it’s French made and they delivered it to me within 2 days.

    My portable library
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this as an early Christmas present for myself, after seeing it reviewed on TV, and I have to say I have been delighted with it. Delivery from the US took only two days from ordering, and it is simplicity itself to use.

The text is crisp and clear, and text size and orientation can be altered to suit individual preferences.

I travel a great deal with work, and now have the luxury of taking an entire library of books with me to read in the space of a single paperback novel – it’s often difficult to get reading on a train, though, as the Kindle is a great conversation starter, and I find myself giving an overview of it to fellow passengers – I should ask for commission!

I tend to order any books via my home PC, then download to the Kindle really does take only 30 seconds. They also offer a subscription to a range of US-version daily papers such as the Times/Telegraph etc, but I cancelled after a couple of days of the trial period, as I found trying to read a newspaper through a 6-inch window rather alien.

You can store music files from your PC library on it as well, allowing you to have some background music while you are reading – the tracks play in the order they were stored rather than having the flexibility of a playlist, and this tends to eat up battery life, which is otherwise very good.

Access to Wikipedia via the Whispernet connection is useful though I don’t use it a great deal at the moment, and there is also the facility to receive Word and PDF files via your Kindle e-mail account from specified senders (they charge you 99 cents per Mb download – they also tell you a way to get them for free, but you lose the facility for instant access on a portable device)

All in all I am delighted with it.

It’s ideal for travelling because of the low weight. It is true that the eyes don’t get tired. Great functions include the inbuilt Oxford dictionary (I’m no native speaker!), the wireless delivery of the media and the Wikipedia access. For some people it might be of great benefit that you can easily change the size of the characters. However, if space, weight and character size of conventional press media are no problem, and if you don’t need to impress people (oohh, aahhh), there is no need to buy it.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is very nice device. Perfect for novel reading. I have notebook and netbook but I don’t like reading on LCD displays.

Wireless 3G in Poland is restricted to Amazon.com and [...] only, but works very good.

Battery life is as advertised. Four of intensive play and about 50% normal use with wireless off.

Very ergonomical and that is better and more comfortable than DX. If you read textbook only, there is no reason to upgrade for anything else.

For novels it’s better than Kindle DX. I have some technical PDF to read and that was the main reason why I switched to DX. Screen is too smal for graphs, tables and more advanced PDF files. Converting text works good but graphic can’t be converted without losing information.

I recomend this device. If you read textbook only, there is no reason to upgrade for anything else. If you more into technical PDF, then DX is the way to go.

I could have given this 4 and a half stars but the rating only works on whole numbers. Out of the box it worked here in Australia and I live in an hilly area with patchy wireless some times. I tell you folk it does what it’s supposed to. Select a book, confirm order and seconds later there it is. I love the technology and the fact that you don’t have to connect it to anything. If you can get a connection you’re away. You really should buy a cover. I bought a leather one and it’s the best thing. Gives it a more book feel as well. Why didn’t I give it 5 ***** ? Mainly because the interface feels a bit clunky. I mean what is this with the little joystick (a bit 80′s isn’t it?) and push a button to turn the page?? Oh and a minor quibble I can’t catalogue my books very neatly. Would have seemed a simple thing to enable us to add folders, ie a directory system.

I spite of this I’d recommend this and have showed a lot of folk here at work. People seem to like the idea and you’ve got a sale or two from my spruiking.

I’m finding the kindle great to use. It’s so small and light so I can take it everywhere with me. It never gets hot so you can rest it on your knee while you read (unlike a laptop). It’s so handy to be able to have what feels like an infinite number of books with you at all times. I used to have a panic if I was going to the beach and was coming near to the end of my book; do I want to take up precious room in the beach bag with another bulky book? No longer. I love the dictionary, it’s so easy to use and means I actually look words up now that I don’t understand rather than just guessing at them.

The downsides? Well I think that it should come with a charger cable and plug (why should we be punished just because we don’t live in the USA?) Also I think the public domain authors should be a dollar a book and other books should still be cheaper. I’ve also still to work out how to download books from sources other than Amazon, it doesn’t seem easy.

Altogether though I’m really pleased and have no regrets with my purchase.

    Kindle 2 Review
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Purchased one for my wife for Valentine’s day. Liked it so much I had her get one for me. I thought viewing the screen would be like a miniature computer screen with glare would make my eyes hurt. Not that way at all. After a while you don’t even notice your reading an electronic device. Registering your Kindle and downloading your first purchase or any purchase for that matter is simple. If you are not tech savvy or scared that this will be difficult to understand they have made this simple for the masses. There is a small instruction book, power cord with an adapter to give the ability to charge via wall charger or USB. I live in a small town in Kentucky and reception with the wireless is not an issue at all. I maintain at least 3 bars of wireless availability plenty, for a snappy download. If you were on the fence, you really have to try this out. It will change your reading and purchasing experience forever.

The only downside I have is the price of the books. 9.99 for new releases is a bit high for a digital product you can’t resell or share with buddies. Maybe having the Nook hit the marketplace will encourage competitive pricing of the digital content.

    Easily 5/5.

    P.S.

If they could come up with a way to offer a water proof product to protect my Kindle I would be very happy. I’m using a ziplock bag right now to protect my Kindle in the tub.

    Amazon Kindle – Wireless Reading
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I first heard about the Kindle at a IT conference. It appeared to be a perfect gift for my wife as she is a voracious reader and would often read a novel in a day. She absolutely loves it. The Kindle is simple to use and the range of books available are extensive. She can download books no matter where she is located and they are ready for her to read in a matter of moments. The Kindle’s ability to preview books at no cost is also a bonus as you have the option to discard any book that doesn’t appeal. My wife would also rely on members of her book club to choose books to read. Many of these books were often expensive. Now she can often pick up the book at a lesser cost via the Kindle and she doesn’t have to wait for the bookseller to be able to supply the hard copy. An added bonus, also, is the fact that the Kindle, with its leather cover, is very light, thereby providing an added benefit over the often weighty hard copy. For me personally, the Kindle, I hope, will provide an opportunity to clear some book space from the bookshelves throughout the home, as the Kindle itself is capable of storing a large number of books. If you are like me and want to remember what colour you painted your walls through out your home, prior to the bookcases taking over, and either you or a member of the family loves to read, then the Kindle is a must have product of today.

P.S. My wife is a fan of Matthew Reilly, Peter Temple and other Australian writers. Any chance of more Australian writers being added to the Kindle Library?

My husband, John, bought me a Kindle 2 -

I am absolutely thrilled with the Kindle 2, and am enjoying reading anywhere – I realize that it wasn’t invented for handicapped people in mind, but, nonetheless, it has been extremely helpful to me. Because of my MS, I have difficulty holding and reading books. I can, once again hold and read many, many books without any problems!

All the features advertised are extremely useful and appreciated (slim, lightweight, wireless, books under 60 seconds, paperlike display, long life battery, etc., etc.). I especially appreciate the Global wireless feature, the black lettering on gray display, the dictionary feature, print size and number of words per line.

I have only one negative criticism of the Kindle 2 – Access to the registered owner’s credit card should be protected by some sort of password or pin, in case the Kindle 2 is lost or stolen.

Again, the Kindle 2 is a superb device.

    Thank you,

    Marilyn Gamble

My Kindle goes where I go even to work just in case I have a free moment to read. Now that I know that I can have my music on it, to play while I read I know that I am in reader’s heaven. I am even saving money because the books are so much less than what I was paying. Thank you for inventing and selling the Kindle

    “Free wireless delivery?” NOT TRUE!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
As a Brazilian resident (and citizen) I’m very unpleased when Amazon states “Free international wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet”.

Every (and I mean ALL) book you buy you pay an extra fee of US$ 2.00 for each and all wireless delivery to Brazil…

Read what I quote from what it’s written in the Terms for buying Kindle 2:

    “Brazil

We are excited to now ship Kindle to Brazil. Customers in Brazil will enjoy:

Books in Under 60 Seconds: Think of a book and you could be reading it in under a minute

Free Wireless: Free 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle. No monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. For non-U.S. customers, there are also no additional charges for wireless delivery in or outside your home country.”

    I affirm: That’s not true!

Every free book in USA costs me US$ 2.00.

Just to stay on Amazon’s ad:

Lost Symbol (Dan Brown) US$ 9.60. Price for Brazilian customers? US$ 11.60! Every item is charged extra US$ 2.00 ;-(((

Come on, Amazon! Give my money back.

I loved your Kindle but I want my money back!

I fell I’m not a regular reader, just an ordinary customer. I feel I’m an abused reader, sorry.

We, my husband and I, received our Kindle for Christmas, this past December. It was a gift from our two daughters, their husbands and the cover was a gift from the grandchildren. It is one of the best Christmas gifts we have ever received. I’m sorry to say, I took over ownership of the Kindle and I love it. My husband really hasn’t had a chance to read a book on our Kindle, but I have already downloaded and read several. It is so nice to purchase a book from Amazon and be able to start reading it right away. I have purchased older books from my favorite authors that some how I missed when they first became available. I also have downloaded free books, as Amazon offers different ones, from time to time. The Kindle is a great size and fits right in my purse, so when I have a doctor appointment, my Kindle goes with me. No more reading old, torn magazines in the waiting room. I plan to give my husband a chance at Kindle once I finish reading my latest purchase…or maybe I’ll just buy him his own Kindle for his upcoming birthday.

This is an excellent product conceptually. To be able to carry so much literature in such a compact unit is remarkable. The screen is easy on the eye and the operation is simple. My impression is that this is a ‘dawn’ product which will lead to a revolution in reading habits, leaving mainly the elderly (and book collectors and book-gifters) with the traditional book.

The obvious downside is that the books are mainly international and local material, including professional books, are probably some distance off reaching the medium. In short, the Kindle will peak when it is the rule rather than the exception (or at least a mainstream alternative).

I have found many free books and even download kids stories to read to my daughter. Now we are never without a good book. I like the basic web feature and am able to view text emails from my Kindle. I would like to see in the future more web access. The dictionary and bookmarks are a wonderful addition and do come in handy. The battery has a good run time and I’ve been delighted by how long I am able to use my Kindle between charging. I would suggest the Kindle to anyone who enjoys reading.

    Kindle 2 delivers as promised

The Kindle 2 delivers as promised.

My first impressions are as follows:

    1. Nice design. Fits in hand easily. The brushed metal back is a little slick and I thought I would have some issues holding my book. But I didn’t.

    2. The menu and buttons are EASY to navigate. When I tried the nook the other night at B&N I was totally lost. I can pick up this Kindle 2 and it is so intuitive. I didn’t even need to read the instructions. I like easy to use. With the nook I felt like I was constantly going to the color screen to figure out my next move with the menu. My hands don’t feel awkward using this device while reading. When I need to reach the menu it is just in the right spot – well intuitive!

    3. It comes pre-registered to you. So the first “boot up” was about a minute – actually if you restart it the about 60 seconds still applies. But you never have to turn it off – it just “sleeps”. I like that I didn’t have to go through a registration process.

    4. My books read on the PC were available in the archive and I started to choose what book to download. You have to download each book individually. Or, go to Amazon.com and use that website to say “download to” and select your new Kindle (which can be renamed).

    5. The print is easy to read. And text-to-speech works well for those books that allow it.

    6. Just tried a trial subscription to the Star Tribune newspaper and the format is really nice…you do get pictures in B/W. But don’t expect it to look exactly like a paper or webpage. It is formated for the Kindle. It is nicely laid out though and you can choose which sections to go to. I actually red a “paper” all the way through!

    7. The dictionary is cool and easy to look up words.

    8. Keyboard is a snap to use.

    9. Much faster than the nook when refreshing pages.

    10. I forget I’m using a device and get lost in my book – that is what Amazon said they wanted to happen and well…it happened for me!

In All – I’m very glad to have read and read and read about the different eBooks. And I’m glad B&N had a demo unit of the nook or I might have made a BAD mistake! And while there are some drawbacks in the Kindle 2 (no way to open the back and put in a spare battery or expand with an SD card) all the good stuff just outshines that. Amazon has done a great job at designing and delivering a book reading, purposed device. I give it 5 Stars out of 5. I did get the Belkin Neoprene Kindle Case (Fits 6″ Display, Latest Generation Kindle) instead of the Amazon.com leather case. I watched a video of someone showcasing why they got this case and it made sense….I’d rather hold my Kindle and read and then put away in the case. I don’t want a bulky cover getting in the way and adding weight!

The only negative to give in my experience is the box the Kindle 2 came in – my fingers had a difficult time grasping and then sliding the “tear” strip from the box. I will NOT discount the Kindle 2 for that…I sent the packing feedback to Amazon on separate cover.

Was a little unsure of an ereader, having read mixed reviews about them but my wife got me this for Christmas and i have to say im delighted with it, it just works really well, is easy to use and very intuative and the ability to download a book anywhere in the work whilst sitting on a beach is a real plus point, ive read 2 books in the 6 weeks ive had it and its only needed charging once which is great, it means i can go on a 2 week holiday and not have to take another charger with me!!

The Amazon bookstore is great with a good range of books which will no doubt become the readers version on iTunes before the end of the year, the pdf format reading could do with a bit of work as there is no option to change the size of the print without turning the kindle on its side and reading the pdf books landscape style which is a bit of a pain as the type is very small but in the normal format the system work superbly.

Cant comment on the web browser function as it wont work in the UK, the voice reading is a bit robotic but it works, buying it from the USA took less than 3 days for delivery to the UK which was great.

Biggest gripe is from my wife who says the page turn buttons “click” is too loud when reading in bed at night and it annoys her whilst trying to get to sleep, so come on Amazon put a silent page turn button on it and let my wife drop off to sleep without shouting at me!!

If your in the market for an ereader dont hesitate with the Kindle you wont be disappointed!!

I’ve bought the Kindle for my girlfriend for Christmas, and after checking out all of the specs i’ve come to the conclusion that it is the best E-Reader on the market. Amazon offers the biggest category of E-books as well. I for one will not get caught up in the hype of the Barnes & Noble Nook or the Apple iPad. The only thing that the Nook and iPad offer are color versions, but honestly I purchased the Kindle because my girlfriend likes to read, and I don’t see a reason for having color if the only thing that is in color typically is the cover. Long story short, it is the best for reading.

Of all the purchases I have made in my life, this is the one I love, use and get the most pleasure out of. The Kindle has changed the way I read. I was on vacation last month and I picked up a book about the local history and I stood there looking at it thinking do I really want to read a regular book or just skip it. It truly took me about 3 or 4 minutes to decide to go ahead and get the book. Reading is so enjoyable now. No losing my place, no not knowing what a word means, no pile of old books sitting around and no trees being cut down for my reading enjoyment. I LOVE this product and have bought several for my mom and closest friends.

I really can’t believe I didn’t review this earlier, but I just went through all my past reviews and sure enough, I hadn’t. Well.. that could be a good thing. I’ve had it about 10 months now so I’ve had time to really put it through it’s paces and decide how much I like it.

It’s lightweight, easy to use, and it didn’t take me any time at all to get used to the e-ink screen. It’s very easy on the eyes. When I have a headache I can increase the font size for easier reading.

I use it constantly, and the battery still holds it charge for days. I’m not kidding. I can and have sat and read 3 books in a row on it, had it on for 8 hours at a stretch and had no problems with it.

It sets up nicely on the lip of the elliptical I use at the gym so I can read while working out.

I use just a standard clip on light on it when I’m reading in bed.

The sheer number of public domain books available for free mean I’ll always have something to read and being able to have new books near instantly has been a joy.

I read a lot. At least a book a day, some days 2 or 3. Whenever I can, I get digital so I can read them on my Kindle. It’s saved money, I have no impulse control with books. My husband likes the fact I’m not buying as many dead tree books, and even more, likes not having to stop and pick up chick lit occasionally. Recommended for serious readers!

My mother is a woman of “a certain age” who received the Kindle for Christmas.

There were four steps that lead me to make the purchase.

    1. My sisters and I were stumped this year, but she had read an article on it and “mentioned” it–very briefly, but nevertheless she commented on it.

    2. One of my sisters and I were on a plane ride to Europe and our seatmate had one–it was his wife’s original but he got it when he bought her the new one. They both loved it.

    3. I had received an offer from a book club for free downloads that I had loaded on my minibook–long vacation and the downloads worked fine on the minibook. I relayed all this to my mother when I got home.

    4. Then I had the Amazon page open and my mother saw the word Kindle and commented again.

    That was it.

That’s a long lead-in that explains how the idea of e-books went from nice to a purchase.

Remember when we first heard about cellphones? Could you live without yours now?

I’ve downloaded 20 books or so for both of us in less than 50 days. We’d been members of book clubs for years, and used the purchase of the new books we wanted to meet our requirements. Therefore, the $9.99 price for new releases didn’t seem so bad. Some of the books were FREE and others less than $5.

My mother loves it. Absolutely. I’ve used it and love it.

Think of all the space you save. The prices of books are less than Sams Club, Costco, BJs, etc. It reads just like a “real” book and you can register multiple devices to use your books–I’ve added my minibook to my account. A charge on the Kindle lasts for ages. Some books are free. The ones you could get in paperback cost less than the paper copy. You can pack enough books in less space than a paperback to last for a month–great for travel for work or pleasure.

If you are considering any other product, make sure you check the price of the books. I could have got a slightly cheaper item but the book downloads were a lot more expensive, more than erasing the slight purchase discount on the e-reader.

Like I said, it’s like when we first considered buying our first cellphone. You couldn’t live without it now.

For as much as i was excited about this nice little gadget, the excitement wore off about a week after i had it. I got it in november and i haven’t used it in a while. It’s great but it just does not replace a book.

I tried reading the Bible on it and it’s definitely not ideal because the Bible is usually not read as a normal book but skipping back and forth through different books and chapters. i can’t just go to the verse i want to, and the highlighting and notes features are great but i find it easier to find a verse through the real highlighting on a real book, especially when you have many highlights. And it’s just not convenient if you read a book and want to read again a specific part, i can remember easily where it was in a real book but on a kindle it’s hard to identify. But i like the kindle because it definitely saves a lot of trees which is always a great thing. So I’d recommend it to read stories on it but not a study book

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I gave my 92 year old mother-in-law a Kindle for Christmas. An avid reader, she’d stopped reading because worsening vision made it difficult to see print. With the Kindle, she can increase the font to an easily readable size. Also, she likes to read in bed but as she became more frail she found it difficult to hold a book up for any period of time. But the Kindle is so lightweight and well balanced that it’s easy for her to hold.

It is a bit difficult for her to adjust to the technical aspects of it, and I would say that if you’re considering the Kindle for an elder it’s important to have someone nearby who can trouble shoot minor problems and questions as they arise. But all in all, a Kindle is a great way to bring reading back to someone who is frail and/or has low vision.

I travel all over the U.S. and have never had a problem with the signal or abilty to download books. The electronic print clarity is truly amazing. When on an airplane, passengers next to me always ask how I like it and I tell them without hesitation that this was the best purchase I’ve made in a while. After hearing about all the publishing companies complaining, and, Amazon relinquishing titles, I expect Amazon to honor our request to return our newly purchased Kindle. What looks to be happening is Amazon is going to let the publishers charge a lot more money for new ebooks. One of the main reasons I bought a Kindle was to get a break on the costs. Now that you are raising your costs to us I no longer believe Kindle is worth its high price. You cannot find most of the current releases. The lag is incedibly annoying, and when some do finally become available the books can be found in used bookstores for a couple of bucks. Where is the upside here?

I could use a pep-talk from Amazon right now on these issues and the reasons why I should consider keeping it. Hopefully it will not be “you bought it, you own it”.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my kindle and use it constantly. Since purchasing mine, two people at work have bought one and others are asking questions. It is easy to use, quick to download and purchase books, etc. The ease of traveling with all my books that I normally carry with me on the kindle is truly a breeze. No more extra bags to carry my Bible, and other reading material in, and no more backaches trying to lug it all. It is so compact and you can use it any where. Recently I was sitting in a hospital waiting room and I could just open it up and read whenever I wanted, didn’t need a lot of space for other stuff.

If you are an avid reader, it is great to take to work for breaks or lunch and just chill reading your favorite book. Not many people carry their Bible around with them throughout the day, with the kindle I can open it up anytime I want or when I need an uplifting thought.

The price of the books is more than reasonable. I only hope that this doesn’t change as I have heard that it might.

I was a little disappointed when I first tried to read it in the car at night: I thought it would be back-lit, but it’s not. You have to buy a little light to attach. I also thought it should have come with a case to protect it, but that also has to be purchased separately. I’ve suggested those extras might be my birthday present. It’s so easy to order new books by reading a sample from books of interestand then selecting your book of choice.

I had the device for 2 months and used it only twice until the screen was damaged. I put the reader on the empty airline seat next to me and my husband put his newspaper and book on top of the screen…that pressure caused the screen the black line and become not able to read from again. I knew by other reviews that people had issues with the screen but thought I am generally a very careful person with things so it would not happen to me. Much to my surprise it did happen to me. Another frustrating point was when I called amazon to see if they could fix the screen I was told that they do not do repair but offered to sell me a refurbished model (funny it’s refurb when they “don’t repair”). BEWARE OF THE SCREEN.

I purchased the Kindle as a gift for my wife back in December. I’ve had the chance to play with it (I’ve read a couple books on it), and although it functions well as an e-reader, it feels a bit clunky. The ergonomics and the user interface are sub-optimal. I may upgrade to an iPad as soon as it hits the market.

In conclusion – good product for the price point, but there are newer alternatives out there.

The Kindle is an excellant item for carrying around Europe. The weight being the main factor for me.

The downside to this is that you cannot use Amazon.co.uk to purchase books.

This increases the price of the books by adding currency exchange commission on purchases.

We also lose out by not being able to collect Nectar points as Amazon.com is a seperate company to Amazon.co.uk.

I live in northern Ontario and received my Kindle as a Christmas present from my wife. It is nice-looking, light, and easy to read. I have downloaded several books. The process is fast and easy. I like the fact that most classic works of literature are very inexpensive. I’ve been reading short stories and novels by Mark Twain and Thomas Hardy. The entire collected work of each is available for just a few dollars. I am a retired English teacher who has always had trouble storing my collection of books. Now I intend to restrict my purchase of books to those unavailable on Kindle or those with special graphics. I’m looking forward to taking my Kindle along on trips to the states and Mexico this year. No more lugging books around or worrying about overweight charges when I fly! I should also mention that the battery is long-lasting, especially when using the read-only mode. I hooked up the charging cord to my recharging station so my Kindle and BlackBerry are always ready to go.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was hesitant about purchasing the Kindle and no longer having that reading-a-book feeling; but I do not regret this purchase. It is great to automatically download a book; and stop the purchase if I push the button too soon. (That is one of my complaints — when I am in the bookstore and click on a book, the cursor automatically lands on the “But it Now” button. If you accidentally push the 4-way button rather than hitting it directionally, you’ve just bought a book!) It’s a minor inconvenience compared to always having reading material with me. I tend to read two books at a time (a fiction, and a non-fiction) so I can now resume reading whichever suits me at the time. I also love the fact this is NOT a touch-screen device, so the screen stays clear of fingerprints. Having a dictionary at my fingertips is a great tool, too. I don’t know much about the other e-books out there, but bought this one on the recommendation of my son, (who researches EVERYTHING) and have no regrets.

    Skeptical Change
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As someone involved in the IT industry, you would think I would be an “early adopter” of new gadgets… but that’s not really my thing. So I have been somewhat skeptical of ebooks and ebook readers for quite some time.

My wife wanted to give me a Kindle for my birthday, but I was less than enthused. Then I talked with a couple of people that had them and was finally sold on the idea of trying it when I learned the battery life was measured in days as opposed to hours. To me, that was the deciding factor to try; my experience with small devices was that battery life was always the key problem… who wants to start reading something and either have to be wired to an outlet or have the device die in mid-read!

I’ve had my Kindle 2 now for about a week… and I’m sold. In my opinion, the device isn’t overly sophisticated and some of the functions are, again imo, quite rudimentary… but I would also argue that’s the point! The device is not really the point! The ability to have easy access to “things to read” is the point!!

What I was told and what I’ve found is that the device itself truly becomes “pointless”… which is precisely the point! In other words, the ease of reading and the experience of being engrossed in your book rapidly overcomes the fact that you are reading it on a Kindle; the device itself doesn’t “interfere” with the reading experience…. which was exactly the objective of what Amazon was trying to achieve in the first place!

In the week that I have had the device now, I find my reading has gone up exponentially. Between the ease of getting a book in the first place and no longer having to worry about “where to put it” after I’m finished it, coupled with the small size of the device compared to, say, a hardcover 400 page book, and it’s long battery life…. I think I would highly recommend this for any frequent flier.

Much has been said about the lack of a backlight but I support the camp that says “so what?”. I wouldn’t have a backlight with a paperback and, as I said, I don’t want the device to interfere with my reading experience. In my experience, a backlight strains my eyes and the device would, then, be a problem rather than a help.

So… I’m impressed. I look forward to the library of available books from Amazon growing exponentially! :)

McMillan could get it back on selling more) On the other hand, the stacks of books in the house will ultimately disappear, because all the new ones will be in the kindle.

I was totally surprised when I received a Kindle for Christmas. I’m not much of a reader these days. However, the Kindle is changing that. It has made it much easier to carry around a book as I commute, and the fact that I can increase the font size to suit conditions (such as how bouncy the train is and how tired I am) has got me reading a lot more. I’ve yet to download MP3s to listen to while I read but I will be trying that feature soon. Now if I only had access to old and obscure books and other works about phonographs and early jazz, I’d be a very happy camper.

The Kindle is fantastic!… no concerns or problems with how it functions, the availability of books or anything. It is great for someone to tell you about a really good book they just read and you can turn on the Kindle and in less than a minute you have “that book” in your hand and at about 50% the cost of running out to Barnes & Noble or Borders to pick it up.

I purchased this as a gift for my wife, who is a avid reader. I am not. I don’t understand the subbtle joy of the smell of a book, the feel of a book in your hands or sitting next to the fire place with a cup of tea and your book when you wake up at 3 AM and can’t sleep. She does. That is her only complaint. The Kindle doesn’t feel, smell or satisfy those avid book reader feelings for her. She enjoys it, completely. She enjoys the reading, but the total experience for her is lacking. She feels, in time, that will probably change. Now, however, it’s just not the same.

I bought this Kindle for my husband as a Christmas gift so that he would stop borrowing mine. He likes it as much as I do. We are disappointed to have read recently that a publisher is forcing Amazon to raise the maximum purchase price for e-books above the $9.99 cap Amazon had set. We will not be purchasing any books that are more than $9.99. This is unacceptable to us. We feel as though we’ve been reeled in to buy the Kindle only to be taken advantage of after the fact. I feel that $9.99 is more than enough since we have only a virtual book that cannot be shared with others which is the case with so many print editions.

It’s convenient, easy to use, and just as much fun as reading a real book. it arrived, two weeks later it crapped out on me, called Amazon, replacement arrived the next day, couldn’t have been easier. ok, you could say, it should have had more staying power, but epaper is still in its early days.

so what i REALLY like about it is (1) the sense i’m always in touch, online. i don’t use a cellphone, so when i travel–including Mexico, where i live part time, i can just about check email for any emergency; (2) i download a lot of articles for reading later (i’m a science writer), so i save as text in the docs folder on my kindle, and catch up reading them anytime, anywhere. love it.

i tried the original kindle, sent it back (main issue, well known to anyone who had one, the crazy way you’d touch it and the page would turn–poor design of side switches), also a bit bulky. this time, kindle 2, they got it right. price ($259) is right, too, considering i’ve paid for eternal online service.

Being very brief, here are is a testimony to the highlights of the Kindle –

    Pros –

    a) Eye strain is actually ZERO. I have read a book for 12 hours straight on an international flight, and felt no strain on my eyes. Reading off the iphone / laptop would have reduced my vision a couple of points!

    b) Works beautifully internationally – tried it in India and Kuwait… worked well, downloaded fairly fast.

    c) Intuitive controls, excellent keypad.

    d) Great battery life.

    e) Beautiful aesthetics.

    Cons –

    a) There is a delivery charge for 2 bucks per book, and 5 bucks per week for periodicals if delivered internationally.

    b) You cannot easily see it before buying. There is the kindle owners society or whatever where owners can show you their device, but it is not easy. You can see the Sony reader / Barnes $ Noble Nook everywhere. They need to fix this – and show off the fact that the Kindle is better than the other two by far.

We bought the Kindle for our son after seeing it reviewed on The Gadget Show – which gave it full marks. The support from Amazon is outstanding. My son is studying for his A levels and uses it to down load books he needs to read. He has them all at his fingertips and can carry them anywhere in this wonderful hand held gadget. He was overjoyed to receive it as a gift.

I purchased the Kindle 1 and really liked it, when Kindle II came out, I sold the first one and purchased the new one – I really liked the changes that were made – easier page turners and speakers. I never go anywhere without my Kindle – ordering books is so easy, when I see a book I want, I order it, then when I finish one, I already have the next book ready to read.

I really have enjoyed my Kindle the first month after it’s purchase. I do have one complaint. One of the reasons for this purchase was to get recently released books for a much lower cost than a hardback edition. Now I see that since ipad has been released the price of the kindle edition books has gone up and I have heard rumors that this will continue. I am not pleased with this ‘business’ decision and I hope others are as well. All in the product itself is great.

Bought this for my 13 year old daughter.

She likes the feature that she could look up a word

as she was reading. Also likes the highlighting so

she can use it for her school books like Lord of the Flies.

Teacher not up to date so she then she has to copies her highlighting

to her paperback but she prefers reading from the Kindle than

    a small paperback.

She does still like a hardcover better but they can be unwieldy

so unless she is reading at home, she uses the Kindle.

It is ridiculously easy to buy and download the books.

Only drawback is the Read to Me feature. It is very mechanical and

    not all books have it.

I know that Kindle does not want to infringe on the audiobook market

but you should be able to download the audiobook onto the Kindle also.

I’ll keep it simple: This is the best ebook reader on the market, hands down. Once you get one you can never put it down, the possibilities are endless, and all the hype you hear about this unit is TRUE. I honestly think the 6″ display is the best bang for the buck and is the most convenient to have. I really don’t want a big monster screen to read everything on because that really takes away from the fact that you can take thousands of books with you in one very compact device. Some may not agree, but I don’t see any use for more than the 6″ screen when you can zoom and have many different font sizes. If you want a big obnoxious screen that is inconvenient to lug around, get an iPad when they come out. :)

I could go on and on about why this thing rocks, but long story short: Get one – you won’t regret it. 5 Stars! Worth every penny!

The Kindle DRM software allows Amazon to control the information on it. They can enter it any time and delete or change content. Thousands of people who recently purchased Orwell’s “1984″ and “Animal Farm” recently woke up to find those books deleted. How ironic is that?

How would you like someone watching whatever you read, recording it, and allowing them to be able to take it away at any time?

The Kindle is defective by design.

I bought a Kindle reader for an American friend in France who has few English books available. After reading it while there, I ordered another for myself. The bookshelves in my house are overflowing, and this is a wonderful, convenient answer. It’s very easy to read and use. There is a small problem in Europe in that there are not as many totally free selections, and a few copyrights do not transfer.

Useful device, even for a gadget freak
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I saw a device online, which was an ebook, so i googled a few sites and saw there was quite a few types. After looking at all the devices, it seemed there was no perfect unit, but the kindle sttod out from the rest. I purchased a unit on-line and was surprised at easy that was. The device arived direct from the U.S. and had easy tracking facilities all the way to a country town in Australia.

After using it for a while, I decided to get another for my partner..(I think I had a choice..not sure) she loves it. as we are on the same account, we both have access to the same books, which is great.

I have a third on the way for my daughter who reads books all the time. She doesnt know she has one on the way for her birthday, i am sure she will love it.

So, what do i like.. the battery life, ease of getting books (even if they are more expensive in australia), the screen is the best part, it doesnt hurt your eyes after reading for a while like the other systems do. I am so impressed with the screen.

I did like one feature in particular which was being able to get a newspaper to read on my kindle automaticaly…ok…its a bit child like, but hey….its futureistic. You will not get pictures if you live outside the usa, but this is a money issue for Anazon not a kindle fault.

I can see so much potential for the kindle.

I did try an put a lot of my manuals on the kindle as pdf, but it was hard to read the formatting. If you into reading books…the kindle is a must have.

I think i like this smaller screen better for book reading, and the larger screen if i was to read technical manuals in pdf.

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention, to buy a new book on line, is a hoot. You get it direct from your kindle using the inbuilt network card using cell phone technology. I was stuck in the middle of no where, and was still able to get a book to read while i was waiting. Can you immagine being 10000 miles for anywhere in outback Australia, and still got a digital book while standing on top of a large hill to get cell phone signal. It would make a good commercial.

I havnt written one of these things before. Shows you how impressed I am with it.

    Enjoy!

The 2nd generation Kindle is light and easy to use. After using it for all of my reading needs for over a month, a book feels clunky and old fashioned and uncomfortable to hold. I can’t say enough about the ease of use and the comfort of the design. I added a leather cover and clip-on light and it is just about a perfect device.

I had been looking at ebooks mainly the Sony for a while and then I stumbled across the Kindle and thought wow that is the one I would like. So it came as a surprise to find my wife had ordered me the sony for my birthday. She was not happy when I said I would like the Kindle, but we sent the Sony back and got the Kindle 2. The reason I wanted the Kindle was for the wireless transfer and its other features over the sony.

My Kindle arrived and I am absolutely thrilled with it. It is so easy to oder and get the books you want to read they are downloaded is seconds. Being in the UK I was getting charged £1 for every foreign transaction I made. This started to make the books expensive. I have now solved this matter by getting hold of a Travel Money Visa card which is in Dollars. It cost me £7 to set up. You put money onto the card and its converted into Dollars so no more charges. I would definitely recommend getting the Kindle. I also have a ipod touch and the free app lets me read my books whilst I have a few spare moments at work and will synchronise with my kindle when I get back home

The Kindle was bought as a Christmas present from my wife. Lots of online study did not show its many talents. The Whispernet delivery service is excellent though I am not in a 3G area therefore downloads take slightly longer. My personal pdf files did not format properly but emailing them to Kindle to convert they were emailed back in 2-3 hours properly formatted. As a reading experience I have at last stopped trying to turn the page over physically and the buttons have now become second nature. The whole experience is improving as I get used to the product and I am continually finding short cuts and new ideas depending sometimes on the software you are reading. All in all an excellent product.

The one and only reason I have not given it a 5 start rating is because mine froze as I was about to start a 14 hour plane flight so I was left with no choice but buy a few books at the airport. However, a few days later I was able to fix the problem, but I would say that it was no easy. I love the ease of the Kindle … I carry it on the train every day, I can stand and read and it fits into my bag easily. As I fly a lot it is compact and easily stored in my shoulder bag. Rating:3 out of 5 stars
    Good things about:

    1) it is easy to read, electronic ink technology really works

    2) relatively light and compact

    3) easy to buy books

    4) long battery life (only with Wireless switched off)

    Things that are not great:

    1) PDFs. Although it is possible to upload them via USB, it is impossible to read – the font is normally too small and resize is disabled for PDF

    2) HTMLs. Although the product description claims HTML is supported, you can’t just upload them via USB (you can, but Kindle doesn’t see it). The only way I found is to send it via WisperNet (which attracts charges, much more than 10 cents per Mb outside the US). And then, of course, you can never be sure about the quality of the conversion. Once you see it, the money is already gone :( Several attempts to iron it out – and you end up paying more than for a book.

    3) A lot of books that I want to read, are just not available on Amazon or not in the Kindle format. Disappointing. So I recommend to have a look around their before deciding

    4) Kindle makes it extremely easy for someone who steal the device to incur charges on your account. And I could not find any mentioning of handling such a situation in terms and conditions, so I assume no liability. For this reason, I prefer not to use One-click purchase. It’s just too risky.

    5) It came with an US power plug, so you can charge only via USB. I tried the Power adapter from a Mac, it doesn’t charge Kindle for some weird reason.

    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I love my kindle but I only wish I gotten the DX one. My reason for 3 stars is that the books vary too much in prices. And that there is 2.99 charge for books that are free for US customers but not international and they should stick to one price. I got the Lovely Bones for 8.56 only to find it’s 4.99 it’s price now. What the ???? So that’s why I give it 3 stars. I hope one day that they will have kindle e-books free like a library, but I guess I’ll be waiting for a very long time for that.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I did a lot of research on this product before I purchased it. There are others like it on the market, but the Kindle was rated the best and I am not disappointed. I love it!! It is compact enough to fit in my purse and take everywhere I go. I’m never without a book. The battery life lasts about 7 to 14 days, depending on how much you read it and whether you leave the wireless on or off. To save battery life, I would recommend leaving the wireless off until you need it. I am thoroughly impressed with the wireless service. I can go shopping on my Kindle, order a book, and download it in less than 60 seconds. All wireless and at no charge! I’ve never had a problem with the download process or time. The books are fairly reasonable. I’ve never paid more than $9.99 for a book and in some cases, as cheap as $3.99. That’s about what you would pay for a paperback book. I would recommend this over any of the competitors out there!

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As a gadget maniac of advanced years I bought the Kindle after seeing the one my son had just as soon as it became available to purchase in the UK and must say I am not disappointed. For reading books by the pool, on the plane, in bed, or sitting around I have found it easy to read, easy to obtain books and absolutely what I needed. I have yet to explore the functions other than actually downloading and reading books. On the plane coming back from a recent holiday I had to guard it from three jealous young men which confirmed my opinion that it was a really worthwhile buy. I recommend it to anyone who likes the written word but who is unable to carry around more than one paperback at a time.

Firstly, as a technical professional who enjoys what is new, feature packed and cool, I still appreciate the simplicity of technical gadgets executed well. The Kindle acheives that exceedingly well. Firstly, the battery life is OUTSTANDING, naturally turn the wireless adapter off if you aren’t using it. The screen is very easy to read, downloading books is very fast and the intuitive design is simple and well done. I can’t fathom a better product to carry on the plane, take on vacations, and just take about anywhere to enjoy a book. I personally use it for book reading, not magazine or newspaper articles. The content of periodicals needs some work. No color? Not important. My only regret? Filling the bookcases in my house! This is a no brainer purchase and a wonderful device for even the technologically challenged.

Still Get Lost in a Book…And Don’t Worry if You Forgot Your Glasses!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had my Kindle for about a year now, and I still love it. I received the Kindle as a gift, and didn’t expect to care that much for it. I was concerned I wouldn’t get that same feeling of being “lost” in a book that you get from print. I am happy to report that that feeling isn’t lost with the Kindle. If anything, it can make it easier to enjoy reading–like being able to read a 700-page book without holding a 700-page book. Without a doubt, it’s better when the Kindle is in a cover. I didn’t like it quite so much when I was waiting for my cover to arrive, but with the cover, it feels like reading a nice, slim, leather volume.

I also love the convenience when traveling. Since I tend to be reading several books at one time, it’s convenient to have them in one place and not have to choose which books to put into my luggage. Plus, with the adjustable type, I can still read even if I don’t have my reading glasses handy.

To sum it up, after having it for a year, I can say that I would buy another one if (heaven forbid) mine were lost or stolen.

Today, the day before we are going to Mexico on 7 day vacation, I attempted to charge it so I could order some books and use it while away. It was dead! I called customer service and they said that they would send me a new one–however, it would not arrive until we were already on vacation. I asked them to send it to our resort in Mexico and apparently that cannot be done either. My husband bought it so I could use a large font and read easily. Sadly, now I won’t have it for the duration of our vacation. I would think Amazon could do better than this…

I recieved the Kindle 2 as a Christmas gift and have enjoyed reading it. Here’s my likes and dislikes.

    DISLIKES:

    1. Can’t share books. I researched the K2 and the other reviews say how easy it is to share books. It’s NOT!. I share a lot of books and it’s not as easy as the others say. If I purchase a paper book I can share it with whomever whenever. Not with the Kindle. I’m hoping that with the other ereaders coming out that it will create some real competition. I think this is one of the biggest issues with ereaders.

    2. Newspaper subscriptions are much more expensive than the printed issues. What’s that about? I can get WSJ subscritpion delivered to my door for less than I can have it download on my Kindle. It is more convenient on the Kindle so I guess they’re trying to capitilize on the convenience.

    3. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT WITH REPLACEMENT UNIT. I’ve had my Kindle for 2 months and it had a spot on the screen like it was burnout. I called customer service and they were very responsive. Great to work with. The disappointment is that the replacement unit I received was JUNK. They will tell you that the replacement units are “highly tested”. I guess they don’t care about how it looks cosmetically. I take good care of my unit and it’s been in a case from day one. The replacement unit I received was scratched up on the back. The face was yellowed like it had been owned by a smoker. I called again and with no questions they sent another unit. I received the 2nd replacement yesterday and the “next page” key on the right doesn’t work properly and the button is pushed in like the previous owner had their finger on it at all times and did some heavy reading. Now I have to call and request a 3rd replacement.

    4. I’ve stopped buying new books for the Kindle as I’m hestitant to invest a lot in books that I can’t share or can’t move to another ereader. If I was a publisher or author I would make the ereader version FREE if you purchased the hard copy. Now that’s real value and and I would have both.

    LIKES

    1. Reading from a the K2 is great. It’s much easier than reading from a paperbook.

    2. Have many books all in one. I typically have 3 or 4 books that I’m reading which allows me to have all of them with me at any time.

    3. Love the text to speech feature. I use it alot when I’m in the car when I’m checking emails.

I’m waiting to see what people think of the Nook and the Apple tablet.

I purchased my Kindle 3 days prior to a trip to India. It arrived within 2 days (to Canada) and was the BEST item I packed on my trip. I could download books from any location in India! It was easy to use and carry. The electronic ink is wonderful as it does not strain my eyes. When the wireless system is off, the battery lasts a LONG time (over 2 weeks) even with daily reading! My only complaint is that the covers for the Kindle on Amazon are overpriced (bought a carrying bag for it in India for 20 cents!) I also wish there was a bigger book selection as many of the books I have tried to find are not available. Regardless, this is an AMAZING product! I would recommend this for anyone who travels a lot. You will not miss “holding a book” once you get your hands on a Kindle!

    Kindle 2 VS Sony Reader
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
    Hello,

I’ve owned the kindle now about 3 weeks and never spent so much time reading. I love it!! Before I had bought a Sony Reader…I was not happy with it at all. It worked. However, I was so disappointed with it after I bought it, that I couldn’t help but try the Kindle out. KINDLE IS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, FAR BETTER THAN THE SONY READER!

The Kindle is more comfortable to read, in its size, as well as easier to read as well. I even ask ppl around me, “Which looks clearer?” and they all said, “The Kindle”, every time. The books are way cheaper than Sony’s collection as well. What’s also great about the Kindle is it is wireless…very very convenient.

I normally do not take the time to write reviews, but I’ve been so happy with it that I can’t help but encourage others who are interested in ebooks to get one, especially if they are planning to buy a Sony Reader. After I saw the comparison, side by side, I returned my Sony Reader.

    KINDLE or the SONY Reader?

GO WITH THE KINDLE! TRUST ME!!!!

Kindle 2 vs Sony eBook reader
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I recently purchased (January 2010) a Kindle 2 and see the request for feedback on one of its screen savers, so here goes.

I should also mention that I have owned a Sony eBook reader for 4 years. The reason for purchasing the Kindle 2 had nothing to do with dissatisfaction with the Sony; I still use it and, aside from the amount of time its battery holds its charge, have no complaints. Instead, I must admit to being something of a gadget addict, and was intrigued with the advertised ability of the Kindle to do more than be an eBook reader.

However, when it comes to just the ability to purchase and read eBooks, I prefer the Sony for the following reasons:

1.) It has no menu to navigate when it comes to simple things like setting a bookmark. (Suggestion: the Kindle should have a mode switch that allows it to be used only as an eBook reader. In this mode, no popup menus are required; all buttons have to do with reading an eBook, not browsing the web or purchasing other books, playing music, etc.)

2.) The size of the Sony is more convenient. It is easier to slip into the inside pocket of my jacket.

3.) The Sony came with a nice cover at no additional charge.

The advantages to the Kindle are:

1.) It plays music (although it would be nice to have a shuffle feature.)

2.) It connects to the internet with no monthly fee for connectivity (although the WhisperNet is very slow and the basic browser is non-intuitive.)

3.) It allows the easy and immediate purchase of new books directly from the Kindle.

4.) It has a wide range of font sizes.

5.) Its battery lasts longer between re-charging than the Sony (when the wireless feature is shut off.)

Of these features for the Kindle, the only one that is of any importance to me is (1.) since I am at or near my desktop or laptop almost constantly and already have wireless connectivity.

In summary, if I had to give up either the Sony or the Kindle 2, I would keep the Sony since my main use of the devices is to read eBooks and I feel the Sony has a better design for doing this. Perhaps, over time, my feelings will change, but for now the Sony is my reader of choice.

I love the Kindle! We live in the south, where the sun is very bright. I’m able to sit in the sun and read with no problems. The ‘next page’ button is on both sides, making it very easy to turn the page with either hand. I seem to be reading faster with less eye strain. We travel a lot, and it’s great to be able to purchase a new book whereever we are.

When traveling, I just slip it into the backpack along with the computer. Leaves more room for a jacket. No more purchasing high priced books in the airport gift shop!

I got my Kindle for the holidays and love it. I no longer have to worry about having a backup book ready in case I finish the one I am reading while traveling. I can just download another right then and there. Example – took my two elementary age daughters skiing for the day and while they took their lesson I read my Kindle and was able to download a new book in the middle of nowhere when I finished.

I read about 20 to 24 books a year so this also takes away the issue of what to do with the book once I have finished it. So far I have found all the books I have been looking and I am now dilligently looking up books that are due to be published to make sure they will be available to download.

I love this little gadget. It is nice when you are reading and you come across a word that you don’t know. Just cursor next to the word and you get a full blown definition. Dictionary on the fly . Also, it makes purchasing your next book really nice. The search feature is easy and you receive a star rating to help you decide. The charge holds for a good long time too before you have to plug back in. Two thumbs up on this purchase.

For those who like to read, the Kindle is essential because it is practical. I no longer need to walk with technical books, which usually are large, I can read anywhere at any time. I’m sorry that where I live can’t access the Internet through browser, I expect the short term, Amazon allows access through browser in other countries.

In my profession I travel often and spend months in countries other than USA. As an avid reader I had to carry books with me, many books, as is difficult to find current literature in non-english speaking countries. I bought the Kindle to give it a try, but thought would not like it. I was wrong!!!

After charging the battery, I started the unit. The books I purchased downloaded very fast. From the first moment I started using the unit it felt like a ‘real’ book. I was very surprised. Now I show the Kindle to everyone and they love it; some have purchased their own after handling mine. If you show your unit to anyone make sure they do not walk away with it; hard to get it back.

Now I am in Eastern Europe office base and do nto worry about finding the next book to read.

Also, I am able to transfer PDF formatted documents to Kindle and read them in teh plane wihtout having to boot the laptop. This alone is worth every penny. I got a free software, MobiPocket, that converts PDF to Kindle format as the PDF files are shown a page in teh window and can be small pitch. Have several trade manuals in my Kindle now.

I wholly recommend you get one; you will not regret it!

I received my Kindle 2 as a present. I had not heard anything about this product before I received it. After it was explained to me what it was, I thought “Great”! I am an avid reader, but after having my Kindle for two month’s I am disappointed. I thought when I first got it that I could now read in bed without turning on a light, but it is not back-lit as I would have thought it would be. Also, even though I can adjust the font size, I find it is very hard on my eyes. I am always blinking alot and just straining my eyes to see better. Another annoyance is the battery icon. It is a very light grey color and hard to see how close it is to needing recharged. For the price, I think you could do better.

    Kindle Lover!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received my Kindle from my husband as a birthday gift in January. I’ve had it for a little over a month now and I absolutely adore it! I was a little skeptical on getting it because I considered myself a “book purist” and I figured there was no way a Kindle could replace the feel of a book in my hands.

Boy was I wrong! The Kindle almost becomes invisible when reading and I don’t have to worry about what page I left off on(because bookmarks have a tendency of disappearing in my home) because it remembers!

The pluses of owning a Kindle:

+The convenience. I can take it anywhere and sometimes when I’m wanting to read a hefty book, I’m not carrying the a very large hardback around with me. My Kindle goes everywhere with me and it fits comfortably in my purse with it’s protective case. I can get anything I want whenever I want it.

+The Samples. By far my favorite feature of the Kindle is the ability to download a sample of the book before I buy it. I love getting one to possibly two chapters free on my Kindle to view before I ever purchase a book. This is such a plus for me because I’ve bought books before that I bought purely on the description on the back cover alone. A Chapter or two gives a good indication if I want to purchase the book or not.

+The clean, sleek user friendly design. I love the design of my Kindle. I find that the buttons are located in good places when I strap on my book light it isn’t hindering any buttons. The pages look like real book pages and I have no difficulty navigating anything on the web if need be.

+Long battery life. I use my Kindle everyday and I charge it possibly once every 4 days.

    The negatives:

-The only negatives I’ve encountered with the Kindle, aren’t really the Kindle’s fault. With some books I’ve purchased I’ve noticed spelling errors, as well as spacing issues. The spelling errors are few and far between as are the spacing errors, but they can still manage to interrupt reading. The spacing errors I would find are more frequent and I do find it annoying to have things spaced weirdly or have large gaps between parts of words. This is a minor annoyance and not something I really think is the Kindle’s fault but took me some time to get used to as I transitioned from book to Kindle.

+The lack of cover coming with the Kindle. I again, know this is minor. I purchased the Belkin cover and I adore it for my Kindle, but I figured for the price a cover should be included.

+Text-to-Speech. I understand this wasn’t supposed to be like an audiobook, but I definitely wasn’t a fan of the feature. I can see it’s use for me in dire situations, but not something I intend to use.

I’ve recommended the Kindle to many people that I work with and have convinced one person that she needs to have it. While skeptical at first, it is easily one of the best purchases that my husband or I have made in a while and it definitely gets a lot of use from me!

After reading a majority of the negative reviews on amazon.com concerning the kindle, and other review sites, I had doubts about purchasing a Kindle 2. However.. after reading about the return policy, and having now spent a few months with the device, I have to be honest and say I wouldnt trade it for any other on the market.

The ONLY reason I do not give this device a 5star review is because the Kindle has its own file format… making it very difficult to have any other books on there other than those you download from the kindle store.. but I am holding out that Amazon will expand its supported file formats.

When I heard about the Kindle from a very good friend, I researched the website and knew this was a product for me. My house simply cannot support the storage of any more hard cover books, thus the Kindle solves my storage problem, and a huge reason for purchasing this item. I love the idea that I can change the font size (6 sizes)when the eyes get tired. The screen and print type make for easy reading. This device would have been wonderful to have 18 years ago when I was doing my Master thesis with its annotation and clipping features – what a utility for graduate students! The 6″ display is ideal for me, the overall size is good (about the size of a thin day planner), and the instant download is fantastic. Just before I finished Edward Rutherford’s, “New York:the Novel”, I purchased Clive Cussler’s, “The Wrecker”. I read for a minute, then checked to see if the new book had downloaded – it had, as the website said it would. How cool is that? Also, another nice feature is being able to read while recharging the battery, evidently this not true with all e-readers.

My daughter has researched several e-readers, and, after seeing my Kindle, has decided that the Kindle is for her. I certainly would recommend the Kindle to anyone who is an avid reader, and has limited book shelve and carry-on space.

I am a huge bookworm and for me the Kindle 2 is great. I didn’t buy it for the technology (which I haven’t had a problem with yet since I bought it in October 2009) I bought it because I can read 4-5 books in one weekend trip and this is MUCH more portable than any other book I own.

The Kindle 2 is not the most sophisticated gadget I have ever used but if you like to read, it works great.

I love it as a bookworm, not a gadget geek.

I just had to put my own review since all I ever see on here are negative reviews on the technology of the Kindle 2, The point was to replace paper books, not be your new PDA/Computer, if you are looking to buy one, please keep this in mind.

As a device the Kindle is fine – probably not perfect, but perfectly usable. I’m a Blackberry user so had more affinity to buttons than touchscreen, so I was predisposed to buy one. But then I read online reviews and bought a nook after going to the local B&N – nice being able to hold it and try it before you buy. Next I went to the online store. Oops! The books I wanted (your tastes may vary) just weren’t available – but nearly all of them were in the Kindle store. I downloaded some free nook books. They were scans with no TOC – real thrill with Shakespeare’s complete works. I cleverly deduced that I’d made a mistake, returned the nook, eating the 10% restocking fee, and ordered a Kindle. For me, it’s better in every way that matters. Bottom line – check the content availability first, then buy what works for you.

    VERY POOR CUTOMER SERVICE!!!!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My family bought me a kindle in November, for the upcoming Christmas. After receiving my kindle, I was not able to use it due to malfunctions of the system. I called customer service many times and was on the phone with several people over the course of a few weeks. Each call lasted approximately 45 minutes to an hour and usually had no resolution. With each person I spoke to, I had to re-explain my problems from the beginning and what had already been attempted to resolve the issue. Once Amazon finally decided my kindle was faulty and was never going to work, I was instructed they would send me a new one and pay for shipping of the old one back to them. However, my warranty was not going to start over with the new kindle. (How convenient for them, but extremely unacceptable to me-seeing as my first Kindle purchase didn’t work and it’s taking me months to resolve that!) I had lost 3 months of my warranty to a Kindle that never worked and if sent another faulty machine, would have less time to get that resolved. Here it is, now February 26th, and I still do not have a kindle! Because I was not satisfied with the warranty situation the man advised me he would send me a pre-paid postage label and I was to return the faulty kindle and wait a couple weeks to get a gift card for the amount paid. I would then have to go online and purchase a new kindle using that gift card. Pretty poor plan in my mind! Also, that email never came so I had to call the company to have them resend the email label. After several more emails to various “customer service” representatives I have been told to just keep waiting until “x date” and then reply back if I haven’t received my gift card.

I just think it’s very poor customer service coming from a company who claims to be “Building Earth’s Most Customer-Centric Company”. What crap! I have been told my situation is “very unlikely” for most Kindle customers, but unlikely as it is, I am still extremely upset that after spending a good chunk of money in Novemeber, here I sit in March (just about) with no kindle!!

I would not suggest anyone to buy a Kindle because you have to deal with peolpe who very clearly do not value their customer’s satisfaction and money. I will be asking for a full refund of the machine and the books I purchased and purchasing another reading system.

Amazon has lost a customer in me. If no stars were an option I’d choose that, but I had to choose one star for I hate it!

    What I like about it

    * screen is great

    * battery life is excellent

    * the OS is responsive, clean, and easy to use

    * whispernet and the built in store are very convenient

What I don’t like about it

    * the 5 way toggle switch is sometimes difficult to use. Its selections aren’t always immediately registered, or sometimes they are registered but there’s not enough visual feedback

    * reading at night is tough. The booklights that I’ve tried all produce a terrible glare on parts of the screen

    * lots of wasted screen real estate that could be used to fit more text on each page. The text doesn’t stretch to edges of screen, and the menu bars (which are more often than not unimportant to me when reading) also take up a lot of vertical space. An option to hide them would be great

    * “location” is not intuitive. I understand something arbitrary needs to be used because of the variable text size, but it’s not clear what that number represents. Something like “paragraph” or something along those lines seems like it would be more natural, as that wouldn’t change with the text size, and it represents something specific that everyone is familiar with. Even a percent would make more sense than a random four digit number.

    * the right side of the device has a home button but the left side has previous page. I’d rather have a previous button on both sides, and a single home button somewhere else. I also use the previous page button more than I use the home button, and being right handed I’d prefer the previous page button to be on the right side of the device

    * the turn page buttons are loud and a bit too tough to press

    * it’s not clear how to get back to the page you were just on if you go back to the table of contents of a book (turns out it’s the back button)

    * no ePub support

    * couldn’t figure out how to delete a book from the device without plugging into PC

The primary reason I don’t like it though, is that it’s too large. I want an ereader to be pocketable so that I can bring it on the train or subway and not have to worry about what to do with it once I get to my destination.

The keyboard takes up a huge amount of room, and I’ve only used it twice to purchase two books since it arrived – probably 0.01% of the total time I’ve spent using the Kindle. I’m fine downloading books on my computer, just like I do with music, and I’d rather sacrifice whispernet and the keyboard entirely and just have a more pocketable device. An onscreen keyboard would even be preferable. It might be marginally more cumbersome, but it would be forgivable given the space savings vs how often I’d use it.

I got this device today and was playing around. The 5-way control key is difficult to operate. I was testing it out in Kindle Store and mistakenly purchased a book I did not mean too. There is a cancel feature that I did cancel the purchase.

I would like to comment on this purchase feature in Kindle Store. When I select a book, the default is on Buy button. It is very easy to make a mistake like I did for a first time Kindle user. I was trying to use the 5-way control to move the selection off the Buy button but it turned out I selected the Buy button. I really think this has to be changed, because it is definitely not a friendly feature for a novice user.

To avoid such an error happen again, I will never use my Kindle for any purchasing.

Please convince your publishers selling the original version to people beyond America. DO NOT sell ‘international ‘ version ever again at the same price with original version. It is NOT a honest way for business, otherwise , users will leave from you to choose other market product at our own world.

    Kindle Addicted!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
When I first decided to purchase an E-reader, I was comparing the Kindle with the B&N Nook. After comparing the features, I went with the Kindle and have not looked back. I have become addicted to this product. My number one reason for choosing the Kindle over the Nook was the book availability. Prior to purchase, I went to Amazon and Barnes and Noble to check on books I knew I would purchase. Amazon had practically all of them, B&N had practically none of them! I was amazed with B&N advertising over 1,000,000 books to choose from. The Amazon selection far exceeded B&N, at least on the books I wanted. Some other features I considered were:

    1) The Nook had the fancy book cover flow at the bottom. At first thought, it seemed nice, but then I have an Ipod that has that feature and I never use it. It is much easier to look at the home page and go through my list on the Kindle.

    2) The Nook has WiFi (I admit I wish the Kindle would add this). I live in a low 3G area (listed as “Edge”) and close to no coverage. Still in my remote area, I get 2-3 out of 5 bars indoors and 4-5 bars outdoors. Connecting to the Amazon site and purchasing books is no problem for me. Though for me having Wi-Fi at home would be an added benefit if needed.

    3) I really love the keyboard on the Kindle. I am not a cell phone texter, but I find holding the Kindle in both hands and typing with my thumbs goes smoothly and guickly. The other controls are readily handy and makes accessing items smooth and easy. With the Kindle, I can effortlessly turn pages, go to my home page, go to various locations, make searches, and other features simply by pressing control buttons and/or using the toggle. I don’t have to go to a separate screen to find these features.

    4) I like that I can have a wish list that I easily access through the Kindle. This makes purchasing books that much faster.

I have to note that I have not made it a whole week without having to charge the battery. I usually go 4 days with wireless on and the unit on sleep mode.

Reading the text is just like reading a book. The brighter the light, the easier to read. Thus, outdoors makes good reading conditions without glare. Of course reading indoors is excellent also.

Unlike a real book, I like the fact that I can just sit this on my lap and read without having to hold a book open with one or two hands.

The text-to-speech feature is nice but rather robotic in that it is not like an audio book but instead reads straight through without any “emotion” or pauses.

There are two features I wish the Kindle did have and maybe it is something that will be improved upon later.

1)I wish when reading a book, the book would include chapter names. Currently only the name of the book is displayed. For example, when reading the Bible, you are on a page filled with chapter numbers and verse numbers, but can’t see what book (or chapter) you are on.

    2) I would like to see a “sort by” feature that included Genre. Currently you can sort your books by Most recent, Author, and Title. Once a person gets a lot of books loaded, it would be nice to go to a particular genre list and then have a sub category that listed most recent, author, or title. The same as going through the Amazon site books.

Overall I am completely satisfied and don’t regret making the purchase. I would recommend the leather carrying case which is designed for the Kindle. It securly holds the Kindle and protects it.

    Battery problems
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I also loved my Kindle for the 1st year. But now that my battery is worn down, and Amazon does not seem to want to share any product information on how I might get a new one, the Kindle loses a lot in the purpose category, – for the most part I have to read everything while plugged in. I am sure Amazon will have to address this problem as other kindle customers come up on their first year anniversary. Until then, I recommend others to consider all their options before they purchase this reader.

    Great for casual reader
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Amazon Kindle is an incredible device for the casual reader. The biggest drawback for the device isn’t really the device’s fault. Digital rights continues to be a topic of heated debate, and I think we’ll all have to weather the storm until they get it all figured out. As it stands now, the Kindle is great for reading any kind of print media, and hopefully some day the DRM people will get their act together.

Purchase a Kindle if you are a book reader, you will not regret the purchase.

    Almost perfect
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I traded my old Sony E-Reader for the Kindle so my comparison is with the two units.

    Pros:

    1. Kindle has a better screen and word visibility – makes reading faster.

    2. The WhisperNet capability is great! It allows you to purchase the book in seconds without the need to transfer the book from the computer. Once you download the books, you can turn off the wireless service to maximize your battery life.

    3. The claim is that the battery Life is about 2 weeks. This has been about true for me. I read on average 2-3 hours/day.

    4. I love the dictionary function. No more looking up words in the dictionary. Just a touch of a button.

    Cons:

    1. The Kindle uses a “location” number and “precentage” of the book to indicate how far you’ve read. I don’t like this. It’s not user friendly. I’m used to the traditional page format. I’m not sure why Amazon isn’t able to adjust to this format.

    2. There’s two ways to turn off the unit. One allows you to put the system on “stand by” but this takes up battery life. You only have to switch the key over. The second allows you to shut it down completely but you have to hold down the key for 30 second. I wished you can simply switch the key and it shuts the system down completely. Minor issue but it’s annoying to me.

    3. I’m not sure of others but I primary use my Kindle for novel reading. I don’t use the keyboard often. I wished the next verison would be a touchscreen and the keyboard incorporated into the screen.

Overall I love my Kindle and would recommend it to anyone who does a lot of reading!

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I absolutely love my Kindle. I read so much and always have 2 or 3 books in the car with me in case I forget one that I’m in the middle of. I hate to be caught somewhere waiting without a book. Now I just slip my Kindle into my purse and it’s always with me. I love that I can change the font so I don’t have to wear reading glasses, I love that it keeps my place – even if I fall asleep reading, and I haven’t used it yet, but I like the idea of it reading to me if I am going a long distance driving.

Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6″ Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation)

I’m Italian and I live in Switzerland. I use to read English book, since my kids attend an American School and I want to improve my knowledge of the language.

The very first time I saw the Kindle, I started to dream about having it: it is so difficult to buy english books here and having to wait for Amazon’s delivery every time you want to read a new book is always frustrating.

I ordered Kindle on friday about noon, I had it in my hands on monday morning! I followed my Kindle’s trip on Amazon web site almost every hour: it was exciting! No problem at all with the costumers nor with the delivery. Great service.

I love it: not so easy to use at first sight as I supposed, but after a couple of hours you just forgot you do not hold a true book. I just miss the sensation that a true book gives you in knowing at first sight how many pages are due to the end of it, but I suppose I will get used to it.

The only real problem is the flash you see when changing the pages… something that have absolutely to be improve in some future versions.

Very easy to buy books and easily delivered to Kindle.

    Thank you Amazon!

    Lovin it!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Absolutely lovin my Kindle. I did a little research before buying it and am so glad I chose the Kindle. It’s everything I needed. Here’s my reasons for my

    Kindle-Satisfaction:

    1. My hands no longer start aching after gripping a paperback for a couple of hours of reading. The Kindle is practically hands-free… just lean it in your lap and press the button for page flipping.

    2. I no longer have to keep a pocket dictionary handy to look up unfamiliar words when reading. Kindle has a dictionary. I simply choose the unfamiliar word on the screen and the definition pops up at the bottom of the screen (and more on continued screen). it’s so easy!

    3. Reading glasses are no longer needed! I just choose the font size I want to enlarge the text.

    4. The price is right. I like Kindle’s book prices especially for the bestsellers. I’ve used the library for years, but getting just published bestsellers for such a good price is a good deal.

    5. I love Kindle’s “whispernet.” You can purchase a book right in the convenience of your own home shopping right from your Kindle. You get the book in what feels like seconds.

*I must add one additional comment about a feature that I hope Kindle improves on. The text-to-speech feature is not as good as I’d hoped. The speech audio does mispronounce some words and sounds rather robotic. Also, not all books offer this feature.

Overall, I highly recommend buying a Kindle if you are an avid reader.

I bought a kindle after my dad bought one and I saw that my best friend had one. I love the fact that you can have all these books at your finger tips without taking up space in a small living area. The Kindle screen is very easy on the eyes and very easy to navigate. I also really like the fact that you can download a preview of the book so you can decide if you really want it or not. When I was deciding on getting an E-Reader it was between the Nook and the Kindle and I am so glad I chose the Kindle. It is well established in the industry and easy to use. I do hope in the future that they might think about having a touch screen because that would be very nice (i.e. iphone, IPod touch). The books you can buy on the Kindle are very affordable and I find that I save a lot of money that way, but I have to admit in the end I might spend more money because I buy more books. If you love to read and you have limited space or travel a lot this a must buy. The Kindle at this point and time is far and above all the other E-Readers on the market in my opnion. I base this opinion on all the research I have done and trying the different E-Readers myself. I would strongly recomend buying a cover for your kindle though, you can get a pretty nice cheap one from Amazon though i wish they had a better varity or selection. I love this ereader! I got a cooler ereader for christmas and it craped out on me on the 2nd day. I was so upset. I looked around for a few weeks and found that the Kindle had some of the best reviews and had everything I needed. I’ve had this now for almost 2 months and I use it everyday. It is so easy to use and I find myself getting lost in it and reading for hours. I am also happy with this because of the whight. Eventhough im young I’ve had arthris for years and it was becaming hard for me to hold books for so long, so I never got to read for as long as I wanted. I didnt relize how fast I would be able to download books either. Before I had to download from the internet then download to system on my computer then download onto ereader. Now I just pick what I want and within 20 seconds its there and ready to read. My only complaint I do have is that when your looking in the Kindle store once you go to view a book or what it is about you can’t go back. That drives me crazy. But like I said thats my only complaint, and maybe you can and I just have’nt figured it out yet.

    Kindle Gets It Right!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my first e-reader, and I must say, I’m truly impressed. Kindle hits everything right, and I’ve done research. First, I looked at reviews all over the Web to find the best e-reader, and Kindle was always on the top. Then, I did my own research and tested some of the other readers on the market. They were bulky, their refresh rate was slow, and it just didn’t seem comfortable. So, Kindle seemed like a good choice. Finally, I compared book prices, and was floored. A prime example was one of my favorite books, the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I found that for Kindle, the book was around $12. On another e-reader, it was around $25. On yet another, it was around $50. For me, that sealed it. I was getting a Kindle.

Now I have my Kindle, and I still stand impressed. I already transferred a document from PC to Kindle, and it was extremely simple. I’ve been reading on it, and it’s just perfect. The refresh rate is very fast, the words are very clear, and the Kindle is very confortable. I can sit for hours and read and read more comfortably than if I had a regular book. Plus, I have all of my books (well, not yet, but working on it) in one convenient place. I would totally recommend the Kindle as the ultimate e-reader. I’ll be getting one for my wife either for her birthday or for Christmas.

I love my kindle. I got it for a gift, and wasn’t sure it would get much use. I don’t read much, considering the time it takes to read a novel and feeling overwhelmed by the page numbers. The kindle keeps me reading, with its extreme convenience. It fits in my overstuffed backpack or purse. I love the web feature! Its a quick and easy way to check email. I would however, like the web to be a little faster, or show pictures. Otherwise, LOVE IT!

I wish I had it before!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love my kindle. Being a reader of English language books in a foreign country, I had always to undergo the slow and expensive process of buying them online. Long waits and expensive S&H charges. Now I am free of that, when I wanto to read a book I can do it in a minute and at a considerably cheaper price. Reading the kindle does not stress my eyes, it’s light to hold and only needs recharging ( if you keep the wireless off when not needing it) about once a month.

Can’t ask for better. I’ve considered other similar devices ( as the Nook) but the colour screen drains the battery pretty quickly and I would not spend all my time looking at the book cover anyway. Other devices as the so praised i-tab can’t match the kindle. I could never read any e-book on a back-lighted screen since it’s heavy on my eyes. So i went for the kindle because I think it’s a winner. Only con: sometimes the kindle edition is more expensive than a paperback , which it’s hard to believe and can’t explain to myself the reason why. Anyway, eventually, it’s a five star review!

I love my Kindle! It is the greatest thing since Peanut Butter but, there is just one thing that is very upsetting with the Kindle, the page jumps 2 pages ahead and sometimes the words are all running together, also, the words in a sentence split apart like, 10 spaces apart. Why does it do this? If anyone out there knows what to do please post it. Is this a glitch in the software that can’t be fixed? I do love the Kindle even though it is driving me nuts with the little glitches in it.

Really wish the “joystick” were bigger. Although you can enlarge the font, when there is an information table, it does not enlarge making it virtuallly impossible to read the contents of the table. Very frustrating when the book is a informational book with many tables of information. Still can’t figure out how to archive a book when I am done with it.

    I LOOOOOOOOVE THIS LITTLE MACHINE!!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just purchased actually two Kindle 2s. One is for a giveaway I’m hosting and because I bought one for the giveaway I had to buy one for myself (of course!). I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am with this purchase. And I was a hard sell…and very hard sell. I was not sold on e-readers at all…until I held this little slice of magic in my hands. I researched them ALL…several times over. And for me, the Kindle 2 was an easy buy in terms of price and quality.

First, I love the size and weight. Couldn’t be more perfect or comfortable to hold. It’s not awkward like holding a book when you have to kind of lean it to one side depending on the page you’re reading. So easy and comfortable to turn pages and I love that I can comfortably hold it in one hand for long periods of time and never feel the arm or hand fatigue.

Second, I wear glasses and reading books on that stark white or cream paper makes my eyes tired after a while. Not so with the Kindle E-ink…is that what it’s called? I love having the ability to increase the font size with the click of the button. It reads beautifully, certainly 100 times better than I ever thought it would. Whether I’m in low light or in the sunlight, it’s always crystal clear and I don’t have the eyestrain.

Third, I LOVE that I can shop and download a book whereever I am and whenever I get ready. Strangely enough, it still hasn’t made me do a lot of impulse buying, which I was afraid of. Nope, I’m still as price sensitive as before but when I find something, one click and it’s mine.

Fourth, I love the dictionary. As a writer, I love learning new words and it’s SOOOO easy to get the definitions. Unbelievable.

Fifth, it’s just friggin’ neat. I mean if you’re like me and you love new toys, this is better than my Lite Brite and Easy-Bake Oven. I haven’t been this happy about a purchase in ages. If you love books and love to read, this is a MUST HAVE.

The only thing, IMHO, that they could add to make the experience even better is a touch screen. But the little mouse thingy (real technical term) functions just fine.

I just received this as a gift for my birthday and I’m so glad I did! I was skeptical at first because I love the tactical feel of reading a book but I actually got so engrossed in reading on the Kindle that I actually tried to turn the page! So you will easily forget you are even reading on an e-reader. I recommenced it to anybody.

The Cons: It seems like they could have made it even smaller. It seems like there is wasted space on the sides of the Kindle somewhat. Then it would be even easier to hold with one hand. But this is only a minor gripe.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I own a Kindle 6″ display since 2 monthes now, here is my little review:

It took only minutes to understand how it works: it is EASY

The paper look helps to consider it as A BOOK NOT A COMPUTER

The battery is never empty, I fill it only once a week. (remember to switch off the wireless)

All my friends are amazed by the “paper look” of my Kindle.

Now I like to have my kindle handy to continue my favorite reading.

I use the Kindle opportunity to reopen a bunch of old French books… they fill all in it!

Some improvements needed for the next version:

    - a light that can be switched on sometimes

    - The screen should be 2 centimers wider to have the same surface as a pocket book.

If you are elder than 50 years you will understand.

    - …because the PDF files cannot be zoomed in. Turn the page 90° helps but…

    - I would love to have a small clock near the page number. When I am reading I forget easily everything!

    - French Wikipedia support? SD card?

I am so glad I finally did it! I love whispernet and instantly getting the latest bestsellers on this device and reading them. The sample feature is awesome. Sometimes I will sample 5 novels before deciding on which one I want to buy. There are also plenty of decent/good books out there for 1 to 2 bucks, you don’t have to pay 10 bucks for everything. In addition, I have been using instapaper to tag interesting articles on the internet and reading them later on the kindle…it simply a better way to read web content. I just save them all and read them when I am lying down in bed.

I was able to download books in Texas and in Florida while travelling to South Carolina. I downloaded a book there also and the books download in a minute. I read alot when I am on vacation, usually a book a day. Try travelling with 14 books in your suitcase because you cant always buy books where you are. The best part was when I got home to Canada and was able to download wireless books sitting in my sun room . We live in a rural area and to be able to do this was great. I love my Kindle and it will be with me on all my travels. Best thing I ever purchased!
